Johnny Gilbert Question
« on: March 03, 2005, 12:19:40 PM »
This isn't that important, I'm just curious.

I went to a Jeopardy! taping yesterday.  Johnny Gilbert is wearing something I can best put charitably as tacky -- a Jeopardy! "varsity" jacket over a shirt and tie.  The only other picture I have seen him in action -- he was wearing a $25,000 Pyramid "varsity" jacket and tie.  However, I've never seen any other announcer in this getup.  So, is this Johnny's trademark, or do other announcers do this as well and I just havent noticed?

--Mike (who still can't get the comment Alex made during a commercial break -- "I don't think I've seen a porn movie all the way through" -- out of his head)

Not THAT surprising. Who need more than ten minutes or so? ;)

Johnny is usually seen wearing a (often satin) jacket over a shirt and tie, and has for the past 20+ years. Apparently it's a look he's become comfortable with. No, it's not an AFTRA requirement. If it's out-of-date, I hope by the time I have achieved his longevity and success that there will be expiration dates on clothes!

Yeah, whenever I've seen him on camera, that's what he's had on. I don't know why Mike thinks it's tacky...I think it's "professional casual", myself.

Besides, if I had a closetful of those cool custom jackets the crew gets from working on those shows, I'd wanna show 'em off. You ever SEE those Pyramid letterman's jackets? Those were SHARP.

When we were on J! for the first Teen Tournament, they gave us order forms for the satin jackets with the J! logo on back and our name stitched on the front.  It wound up running us about $60, but it was well worth it.

It's great to look at, which is about all I can do with it right now.  (As a teacher my senior year once said, "Mr. King, how long has it been since the two sides of that jacket saw each other?")

I had the great good fortune to use Johnny in a radio commercial a few years ago, and whatever he was wearing he was a terrific guy.

The bit was that he listed all the fun things you'd get to do if you became a doctor, so imagine Johnny reading a list like, "remove spleens! Perform bowel resections! Explode kidney stones with lasers!" He even did my answering machine.

Lots of shows have satin jackets. I myself bought two from "Card Sharks" '86 off of Ebay some time back. I could have had four or five, but decided not to be greedy. I'm sure the list is nearly endless as far as game shows are concerned, but we have seen on the air - "Hollywood Squares" '86, "Win Lose or Draw" (both shows had one day per week usually where all the stars wore their complimentary jackets) "Password Plus," et al.

I remember a local promo for Jeopardy on the local news when they toured out to Boston. I can't remember if Johnny had the Jeopardy logo on his coat, but it definitely was a hip coat.

He also mentioned that he has NEVER missed a taping of the 1984-Present Jeopardy. (Well, duh)

Those kinds of coats would be a great collectors item. Any available in XXL?

The only time I can think of where he did not wear the coat was the 3000th episode. He had a suit on that day, at least at the beginning.

Same for the 4000th show from New York in 2002.

I remember John Davidson saying on an episode, that if anyone at home liked the jackets and wanted one, there's no possible way you can get one.

Nice guy!  :)
