100 Grand--query for the enlightened

I'm kind of fascinated by this show, so here are two rather obscure questions that I thought would be worth a shot at asking:

Does anyone know if any contestant came even close to winning the $100K on 100 Grand? Also, were women not eligible to participate?

IIRC from my very younger years, no one got close to the $100,000 before the plug got pulled.

And I assume there was no ban of women, it was just that per normal, their applicant pool was overwhelmingly male--and being a prime time show, that wasn't considered that big a problem back then.
