Does anyone of an advanced age remember a similar game on US shelves about thirty years ago? I think it was called Jotto, and it had the same game play as Lingo except the first letter wasn't given. That made it more challenging.

There was also a version of the traditional Mastermind called Word Mastermind, played with four or five letter words to be guessed instead of color combinations. Games Magazine has recently ran a puzzle called SOlitaire Jotto, where they'd show some words and number of letters in the word that were in the five letter mystery word, and the solver would have to figure out the word from that info.

Does 33 qualify as "an advanced age"? I actually have this game, but I bought it on eBay a few years ago.

Anyway, Jotto is far more challenging because your opponent only tells you how many letters of your guess are in the word. He doesn't tell you which letters are right, nor does he tell you whether they're in the right position. Lingo is child's play (without Uncle Bill) by comparison.

IIRC, Jotto started out as an independent game in the 50s or 60s, Selchow and Righter picked it up later (I have that one, too), then Endless Games picked up the rights and offered the game a just few years ago, but dropped it not long after.
