There were of course nighttime syndicated versions of TPIR, Squares, Name That Tune, Feud, Gong, and Match Game; but since we only had two commercial network stations and PBS in 1977, they were never shown here. There was not much first-run syndicated shows in Alaska because of the "bicycling" method being used, compared to the two- to three-week delay of network material from the Lower 48. Of course, it all ended in the 1980's with satellite distribution.

Well, the network shows. In the '70s until 1984, Channel 2 started their prime time at 6:30 after the news; Channel 11, 7:00 pm. The network newscasts (and special events like the Academy Awards) were aired on a same-day delay. For more on this, search the newsgroup postings for Fairbanks TV history. These days, primetime in Fairbanks is 8-11 p.m.; Anchorage's from 7-10 p.m.

Speaking of which...remember the "Who Shot J.R.?" episode of Dallas in 1980? It was broadcast on a same-day satellite delay in Anchorage, but we in Fairbanks got screwed as Channel 11 that night ran ABC's pre-pre-TGIF comedy block (Taxi, Laverne and Shirley, etc)! Of course, we found out in the next day's News-Miner on who pulled the trigger, and we would have to wait till next Friday to see it for ourselves.

But you wanna talk about the old days of delays in Alaska? When the original "Star Wars" opened here in '77, it came 14 WEEKS AFTER ANCHORAGE and FIVE MONTHS AFTER THE LOWER 48!!!!! At that time, new movies came to town several months after release. Those days have been long gone now for decades.

According to an old TV Guide Almanac I have, which lists the TV channel allocations for all U.S. cities (and a few foreign ones), Alaska was granted only VHF channels with the same three or four channel numbers repeating themselves throughout the state.  If the two older stations are now primary ABC and NBC, when did the new CBS station come in?

KTVF signed on as a CBS station and KATN NBC/ABC both in 1955. From the early '70s to mid-'80s, KTVF ran some ABC shows along with the CBS ones; they would later become CBS/NBC. That changed in 1995 when new ownership of KATN and two of its sister stations in Anchorage and Juneau (both ABC stations as well) would be merged together as a statewide ABC network. As a result, KATN had to drop NBC.

In response, KTVF decided to end their 40-year affiliation with CBS -- who were in third place in the 1995-96 season -- and become a full-time NBC station. That came in effect in Spring 1996.

After KTVF went to NBC, KFXF Fox 7 temporarily ran a handful of CBS shows. Unfortunately, TPIR wasn't one of them; the only CBS daytime show they aired was Young and the Restless. KXD Channel 13 (the new CBS station you were referring to) signed on in August 1996; both stations are owned by Tanana Valley Television.
