As long as it is a one time special it does not bother me. I like it when they mix things up a bit.
Agreed.  The whole situation can't be more ridiculous than it is already--and it sounds like it should be a fun two hours of mocking something that can't be mocked too much, in my view.

I hope they get Walberg to host--depending on who'll be the contestants, they'll probably need more than a few of his patented withering glances from \"Russian Roulette.\"  If they could get Tom Bergeron, even better--he would definitely have a lot of fun with the whole silliness.

But hey, this is the same network that now embraces should-have-been-long-forgotten reality show contestants as celebrities.

Although I still say they should give Jill Nikki a spot on some future ep of Celebrity Cram... :-)

I wonder what GSN is going to do about giving EVERY candidate \"Equal Time\"? Doesn't it have to be offered per FCC rules?
Answering a question with a question - do national cable networks fall under equal-time rules?
From the Associated Press:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Arnold Schwarzenegger's foray into California's gubernatorial recall election poses a dilemma for broadcasters who might be tempted to show his films during the race: Doing so would allow rival candidates to demand equal time.

For that reason, broadcasters in California will likely not air Schwarzenegger movies such as \"Total Recall\" and the \"Terminator\" or a repeat of a \"Diff'rent Strokes\" episode with Gary Coleman for the next few months.

Cable channels are not covered by the Federal Communications Commission's equal-time provision, which in the past kept reruns of \"Death Valley Days\" off the air while Ronald Reagan ran for president. A repeat of a \"Saturday Night Live\" episode featuring Don Novello, aka Father Guido Sarducci, on cable, for instance, would not trigger the provision.

Novello, Schwarzenegger, Coleman and more than 240 other candidates have filed to run in the Oct. 7 election to recall Gov. Gray Davis. The equal-time rule kicks in on Wednesday, when the state is expected to officially certify the list of candidates.

The major networks do not have a Schwarzenegger movie scheduled over the next two months, but local stations can make their own decisions about what to air.

The National Association of Broadcasters sent an alert to its California members reminding them about the consequences of the equal-time provision. The provision would also apply to stations in neighboring states that reach a sizable number of California voters.

\"It's doubtful Arnold's movies will be shown on local broadcast stations between now and the election,\" said Dennis Wharton, an NAB spokesman.

Equal time is not automatic. Candidates must file a request within seven days, and the provision makes exceptions for appearances on news programs, interview programs such as \"Meet the Press,\" documentaries or spot coverage of news events.

The FCC has ruled in the past that shows such as \"Entertainment Tonight\" and \"Access Hollywood,\" which are likely to devote a lot of air time to the celebrity aspect of the election, qualify as news shows.

The number of candidates in California's recall race makes equal-time concerns even more thorny. The one candidate with questionable standing? Gray Davis.

California's recall statute does not recognize Davis as a candidate in the recall election, but the FCC most likely would, based on a previous ruling.

The Oct. 7 ballot will ask voters if they want to recall Davis, but his name will not appear on the list of replacement candidates. The FCC ruled in a similar recall situation that it would be unfair not to give the incumbent an equal chance to answer his critics.

The rule also requires broadcasters and radio stations to offer candidates their lowest advertising rates, a right that would be given to Davis along with the other candidates based on the FCC's previous ruling.

Celebrity candidacies have led to broadcasting dilemmas in the past.

In 2000, some CBS affiliates in East Texas had to pre-empt some rerun episodes of \"Walker, Texas Ranger,\" because character actor Noble Willingham, who appeared as a bartender on the show, was running for Congress.

When Reagan ran for California governor in the 1960s, the show \"Death Valley Days\" took on a different host to avoid being essentially barred from the air.

In 1972, NBC aired a Doris Day movie in which comedian Pat Paulsen appeared for 30 seconds. Because Paulsen had launched a satiric presidential campaign, he was ruled a legitimate candidate. Two Republican candidates requested and got 30 seconds in the same time slot as a result.

I thought that GSN had higher standards than this. Boy, was I wrong.

When you do a show that involves one of the darkest points in political history and includes an Austrian action star, a porn king, a porn starlet, and a washed-up child star, you have hit rock bottom. Never mind the fact that their idea of celebrities involve Z-list reality people and forgotten people of the past.

Well, this show got GSN mentioned in two different sections of today's L.A. Times, so it's obviously having the intended effect of getting more publicity for the network, if nothing else.

I'm sorry, but although I'm not one of those people who'll make comments about \"the land of fruits and nuts\" and tell someone to \"go back to San Francisco,\" there is a certain sense of schadenfreude that comes over many of us non-Californians about this whole mess--and that there was the feeling that sooner or later the most over-referendaed of all states would have the ultimate referendum when someone could call for recall of an official and make it stick.  And you have to just shake your head when a state in as deep a financial hole as California drops even more money for this folly.

What you have to realize is that GSN will not be entirely looking for \"celebs\"--either A-list or Z-list.  They're looking for the kooks who've filed, the people who could've gone on \"The Name's the Same\" like Michael Jackson and Edward Kennedy, anyone who'll be entertaining.  (If AH-nold wants to do it, I'm sure they wouldn't turn him down, though.)  Sure, it's not exactly C-SPAN--but this whole election isn't C-SPAN.

And as Jim said, GSN is getting invaluable publicity from this stunt than they could ever get in a million \"Match Game\" or \"Twenty-One\" marathons (or, for that matter, video game show blocks).  Good on 'em (and I *am* looking to Oct. 1).

What's so dark about it? The people decided that their leader sucks, so instead of enduring it, they rose as one, declared that they would not tolerate it anymore, and they're trying to get the guy thrown out on his ass. Sounds like a bright point in democracy to me.

It's dark because it's rather dumb.  I agree with Mark though; I do get a kind of sadistic pleasure out of seeing a whole state do something so foolish.

I never wonder why other countries laugh at our stupidity.  What I wonder is why other countries try so hard to be like us.

From the Zap2It article:

At the press conference, Kennedy led Coleman and Carey, whose most printable film title is \"Big Blowout,\" in a mock round of the game. The two buzzed in to answer questions about California politics and history.

After both missed a question asking for the name of the first film shot in Los Angeles (answer: \"In the Sultan's Power,\" 1909), Coleman said, \"Okay, so we suck at movie trivia.\" To which Kennedy replied, \"I think Mary sucks on a whole lot more than movie trivia.\"
