What's in a name?
« on: July 01, 2005, 01:15:08 AM »
During the many periodic 'game show booms,' it may have been easy to confuse one host with another; particularly if one or more hosts had the same first name. For example.....

In the '50s, there were plenty of Jacks (Bailey, Barry, Narz, Smith); several Johns/Johnnys (Daly, Carson, Gilbert, King); and about three Bills (Cullen, Leyden, Wendell).

The '60s had several Bobs/Roberts (Barker, Kennedy, Clayton, Eubanks, joined in the next decade by Van and Hilton).

You had an abundance of Jims in the '70s (Lange, McKrell, Peck, Perry) and at the same time there were some fellas named Richard/Dick (Clark, Dawson, Enberg, Martin).

In the '80s and mostly the '90s, we saw more than one host either named Pat (Sajak, Bullard, Finn, Wayne); or Chris (Hardwick, Harrison, Jagger).

So, think about all this the next time someone asks you something like, "Wasn't it Jack BAILEY who hosted Juvenile Jury?"

Cordially,

So what you're saying is that a lot of people who hosted game shows had common first names.

No, I'll tell them what I usually tell them, which is unprintable in this forum, like when they insist Robby The Robot was the robot on Lost In Space.
Violence will commence when I hear, The Joker's Wild? Yeah, that's the show about definitions.
I have yet to learn that someone's confused Blake Emmons with Blake Pickett.

Well, I guess if you can confuse Buzz Aldrin with Buzz Lucan...

How about the eleventy billion people who confuse Chris Lemon and Chris Clementson?

Hey, this thread is bound to go off topic eventually. Why fight it?

Another question that could be asked is "What is the most common name for a game show host?"  Were there more Bobs, Jims or Dicks?
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

Get rid of the interloper! I want George Michael anchoring Sports Machine solo.

While we're on the subject with people with the same name, he's been solo ever since he left Wham! Nowadays, the only solos he can perform are in park restrooms.

Based on the list posted, I'll go with more Bobs.

The 80s also had a mini-resurgence of Bills: the ending of the Cullen era and pretty much the only Rafferty era.

What about initials?  I seem to see BC as the most commonly used initials for hosts and recurring panelists (first and last names, unless middle names were commonly used, like John Charles Daly): Bill Cullen, Bud Collyer, Bert Convy, and Bennett Cerf.

And fostergray82: someone else watches "Conan O'Brien", I see. :-)

I'm hoping we get a run of Blakes in the future.  We should have more than Emmons and Pickett.

In the '90s, there happened  to be 5 Bob's(Barker, Bergen, Eubanks, Goen, Saget), and there were 2 David's(Ruprecht and Sidoni).

Saget was on "Full House" not "Fun House".

Maybe it's referencing "America's Funniest Home Videos".

Anyone want to take a shot at explaining how America's Funniest Nutshots is a game show?
