Didn't they rotate throughout the four majors like most of NBC's games of the time?  For example, the first SP taping of 1985 came out of Studio 1.  Convy had made a point of saying during the first show of that taping (aired 1/22/85), "We're in Johnny Carson's studio, where the audience is all banked up.  We'll get a shot of it later" (or words to that effect).

It's nice that Bert fights for the contestants/celebs. But on yesterday's 8/1/85 choice rerun, Bert fought just a bit too far. Constance McCashin and the contestant got the last word in the second endgame, Inn, right after the buzzer sounded. Bert said in the post mortem that Standards and Practices would not rule that a win because the contestant said the password just after the buzzer sounded. After the final commercial, they show the last few seconds of the tape, and Bert himself makes the decision that it was close enough and the $20K was awarded to the contestant just as the show closed. HOw in the heck Bert ended up producing game shows despite making bad judgment calls like this I do not know. He had no stake in SP like Barker does with TPIR. This judgment call is every bit as bad as Barker's awarding the prize to that guy from a few months back who pressed the price reveal button in Flip Flop before doing any flipping or flopping.

Y'know, I never thought I'd say this, but we're in almost complete agreement on this one (can't speak for the "producing game shows" part, I'm not qualified to determine that).

I seem to recall a relatively spirited discussion on this when we moved to EZBoard (couldn't find it here or at the old Usenet, so I'm making the assumption that it was there--unfortunately the EZBoard posts are toast due to glitches and attacks), and after viewing the tape there is absoutely no way I would have let that call slide.

This might have been better served in a separate thread, but way to step out.

This judgment call is every bit as bad as Barker's awarding the prize to that guy from a few months back who pressed the price reveal button in Flip Flop before doing any flipping or flopping.

I saw an episode of "Price" a while back where a lady was playing the Shell Game.  When it came time to place her first chip, she actually picked up one of the shells and looked under it.  The reaction was priceless.  Whether she did this purposely, or just didn't understand the game, who knows...but when she was going to place her first chip by that shell, Barker said something like "you're not going to put it there are you...you know it's not there".  IIRC, she ended up with three chips and put them on the three she didn't pick up - so she ended up winning the prize.

I know at that point you're really only playing against the house, but here's a contestant who clearly had an unfair advantage because of her own miscue.  Should she have been forced to place her first chip by the one she picked up?
