Karn's Feud

I know they are running reruns, but Family Feud has posted a season high 3.2 rating during the week of 7/18.  Plus, its female 25-54 demo has been doing well, too.

It's great news for the genre, yes.  But like what some of you said in previous threads, I can also agree that I cannot stand Richard Karn's "daily show routine".  As in:

"I'M GONNA DOUBLE THOSE POINTS!!!"

"...$20,000!!!" **mandatory audience cheers**

"It's going to be tougher, so I'll give you 25 seconds."

"I'm Richard Karn.  I'll see you next time...ON THE FEUD!"

The passwords are "more ad lib".

I do. It'd probably be a 6.4 if it had a decent emcee.

Is this the highest rating Feud's gotten since the Combs era?

Clearly Richard Karn has made a pact with Satan in order to achieve such high ratings.  I would not be surpised to see his shadow delay in movement after he walks away or for him to start clipping his eyebrows in a downward point.  He already has the devil beard!

But since I'm not available, Karn will be employed for the foreseeable future.

But seriously, folks...give Karn some credit, he has reversed the Louie curse.  Even if it means we have to strike first blood while eating Hilshire Farm sausage, wearing flannel, and doing the Binford salute.

So we already surpassed the superior Combs & Dawson run.

Now can it beat both runs combined? (15 years?)
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

As far as half-hours of programming, for a time Ray was doing an hour on CBS and a half-hour in syndication and R. Dawson did ABC and syndie concurrently for approx 5 years, so wouldn't Karn have a ways to go to match their output?

Ian, re: Feud being renewed until 2008, I don't think that is set in stone; It's sorta like my TV Guide subscription, which I had renewed in 2004 to run to 2006, but Gemstar has changed the product on me.

Does not compute.  HSq pulled a 2+ with a decent emcee.  Maybe the game's the thing after all.

OTOH, how would Feud do with Patrick Wayne instead of Karn? [ducking]

Just something as I was thinking of, and will keep this on topic but steer it in a new direction.....

"Match Game" lasted one season from 1998-1999.
"Card Sharks" barely lasted a season.
"To Tell The Truth" lasted a few seasons as well (someone help me with that one!).

The latest incarnation of "Family Feud" has been on since 1999. How is it that FF has taken off, while the rest (with the possible exception of TTTT) have all been busts?

I would honestly say that it's because the game itself is stronger and more recognizable than the host...

When Louie hosted it, the gameplay sucked...now the gameplay is fine, but Karn (although he has moments where he does ok, and, IMHO, is better than Louie or Dawson's second time) is just so-so.

Match Game tried to recapture an era with bawdy innuendos, but it's prize shrinkage, less-than-stellar panel, and low clearances didn't help it all. Plus, All-American failed to realize that the zaniness on MG didn't come about through forcing these innuendos, they kinda just happened.

To tell the Truth did ok, but I think the era of panel shows has passed.

Card Sharks died because its not as strong of a name as Feud was, and to top it off, they screwed around with a game that probably would have been fine in its original incarnation.

Match Game was a horrible show with an MC not right for the show.

Card Sharks *did not* last for a season... because it was a horrible show AND the MC was stiff.

To Tell the Truth lasted for one and a half seasons.  It wasn't a horrible show wtih a sort of interesting format, just kept afloat by a good MC.  Not very strong though.

Family Feud has a great format.  It barely stayed afloat because it had a horrible MC.  It's doing better now because the MC is not-so-horrible.  There is a delicate balance that much be achieved, how it's done is anyone's guess.

3.2? Damn...I think that might be enough to get into the Top 25, but it's been a while since I've seen a syndie ratings list. It would be great if all four syndie shows can get into the Top 25 this upcoming season.

BTW, I've learned to just laugh at the hyperactive audience. Apparently, Fremantle thinks it works. :-P

EDIT: According to a list from April 2005, it would tie for #18, with Millionaire and Judge Joe Brown. So four games in the Top 20, hypothetically. This could be a good sign for 2006, esp. if Deal or No Deal and Ken Jennings' show take off.
