Sampling game show music
« on: August 15, 2005, 05:58:12 PM »
BBC Radio 2 recently broadcast a documentary about the art of "sampling", aka taking small portions of old songs and intregrating it into new ones.

As for game show music, the only sampling we've heard was a bit of the original Family Feud theme included in the 1999 version. But which other themes do you think would deserved to be sampled by anyone?

Before anyone even brings it up, no, Nelly did NOT sample the HSq86 theme. Yes, the two songs sound similar, but he took a portion of a Patti LaBelle song. That's it. :-P

Some already have. To wit, Crystal Waters sampling the TPiR theme for "Come On Down."

As for being "deserving", if the right music is written around it, you can sample most anything. It's an awfully silly question.

Dream Warriors sampled (and thus revived) the theme from "Definition", "Soul Bossa Nova" years before Mike Myers even thought of Austin Powers.

This doesn't count, but I wrote some lyrics to Merv Griffin's "A Time For Tony." One of these days, if I can ever talk one of my friends into singing it, I'll record it and put it up to hear.

"Love, Need and Want You*"...and for the record, he did sample "The People's Court" theme for a recent song.

No, not a journalism grad, fortunately.  I would be *really* broke if I was, as opposed just poor.  Thanks though!

I was referring to myself, which is why I attributed the info to you.

You got the poor part right, though! ;-)

When I first heard that Nelly song I didn't even associate it with "Hollywood Squares", until I read it on here!  I guess sometimes if you're hearing something in a different context than you're familiar with, you don't always pick up on it right away.  I think I have a good ear for music but I just didn't catch this one.  Now, whenever that song comes up on the radio I always turn the dail!
