Yep! When it first started, Norm MacDonald's Burt Reynolds was the resident asshat in the sketch. It's really fun to watch those in chronological order and see Hammond transform his Connery impression to "merely eccentric" to "downright abusive"...

Not at all. Hammond played the first couple Connery appearances pretty straight. When CJ! first started on SNL, aside from the Burt Reynolds stuff, the gag was simply that the contestants were very stupid. As time went on, the Connery character developed into an eccentric who kinda behaved like he thought he was still and actually James Bond, and that Trebek was his Ernst Blofeld, and THAT developed quickly into the Trebek-abusing Connery we love today.
