Obscure Price reference on NFL CBS
« on: November 27, 2005, 05:16:02 PM »
During the Chargers/Redskins game this morning on CBS, a claymation (or animated, it went by so fast I didn't catch the majority of it) commercial aired with a claymation Jeff Probst, Terry Bradshaw, and others hyping the "newly remastered in HD" Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on CBS.  During all of this some elves were pulling the Price is Right Big Wheel around.

I, for one, was glad to see the acknowledgement of TPIR.

This is the follow-up to the spot CBS did last year in honor of Rudolph's 40th Anniversary on TV, using their own version of Rankin-Bass' "Animagic". The spot made its debut during the first hour of Thursday's parade coverage. Ths time the setting is a soundstage at good ol' Television City.

Look for the Big Wheel in the scene after the Animagic Probst appears. One elf is pulling the wheel while another one is running atop it. Nice touch. One wonders how Barker or the Beauties would look.

BTW: Terry Bradshaw isn't in the spot - he's with Fox. Jim Nantz made the cut, though, in place of Phil Simms - and so did Letterman. "Hello, doggie!"

You're right about Bradshaw.  I should have realized that when I made the post!  ;)  I was switching back and forth between the CBS and FOX games.

Wasn't Greg Gumbel in last year's version in lieu of Nantz?

Yes.  Since the first spot was storyboarded, CBS switched its top NFL guys, putting Gumbel in charge of The NFL Today and Nantz on the "A" team with Phil Simms.

Which was an improvement...slightly.  Gumbel's a better studio host, but Nantz is a lesser play by play man.  One day, some network will truly appreciate the talents of Kevin Harlan and make him the flatout lead announcer for network coverage of (insert sport here).

I believe the lead position of NBC is still looking for their new NFL play-by-player for next year.  Still, I think Tom Hammond may get that job.  Incidentally, am I the only NFL fan who can't tell the difference between Kevin Harlan and Kenny Albert?

Nope. I remember the first time I heard Harlan (I think it was on Fox NHL Sunday), I coulda sworn he was one of the Albert brothers. (Is Kenny a brother or a nephew?)

Kenny is Marv's son, and Steve and Al's nephew.

And thankfully, I opted not to listen to him and Baldinger butcher the Bears/Bucs game--opting for radio instead (although a thousand poxes on Fox for giving us Green Bay/Philly instead of NY Giants/Seattle as the late game--dishes are not an option for me; at least I did see most of the overtime).

I fear you're right (not that I hate Hammond--he's just too vanilla for me).  And NBC doesn't have that real signature play-by-play voice right now (Costas apparently doesn't want the play-by-play gig).  I wouldn't mind seeing Kevin Harlan get the gig if CBS is willing to let him go, although I'm still thinking that you can't rule out Marv returning to NBC (right now, his only TV gigs are with TNT and YES [how fitting], plus doing Westwood One NFL radio games).

Whoa...that's news to me.  Any idea why Marv left MSG Sports Network?

Hm...I'm either thinking Cablevision deal or some lucrative big bucks contract?

Sean McDonough shouldn't be relegated to regional games on ESPN.

He just came back from Hawaii, working Maui Invitational hoops (including that classic MSU/Gonzaga triple OT game--sorry, Matt O., but I'll get mine when Duke hammers Indiana).  I don't think he's complaining too much (of course, ESPN/ESPN2 games for the most part aren't regional).

Also saw another little funny TPIR reference tonight on Family Guy.  In this episode, Peter(?) is watching TPIR and an IFUB is happening.  Man in spot #3 bids $780.  Woman in #4 asks what he bidded, and Bob repeats it.  She bids $781.  Guy proceeds to say F@#$ You.  Gold.

I didn't catch the credits, but does Bob actually provide voice overs or do they glean the audio from a show?
