That looks like a good book to buy.
Explaining the differences between a quiz, a dating, and an audience show.
Thanks for the heads-up!

Because the rest of us have NO idea how to distinguish the three from each other.

OK, now that we've got the kindergarten recess stuff out of the way...

It looks like a reasonably serious study of the genre and could be interesting.

So how many "serious books" do all y'all know of about the genre? (As opposed to fan-oriented "how you get on a game show" types. quiz books from Jeopardy!, etc.)

I can think of a few -
"Prime Times and Misdemeanors" about the 50s quiz scandals.
Gil Fates' "What's My Line?"
Maxene Fabe's "TV Game Shows"
Of course, the three "Encyclopedias"
This isn't a plug, but you can ask me about my book.

Always happy to help, though there have been a couple (such as Fred & Steve's latest) that I haven't gotten around to adding.

The book Bob found is a scholarly, sociological look at the genre, which should make it less appealing to, let's face it, most of this group.  The only other general book of this type would be Quiz Craze, which is one boring read.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.
