I think it's rather odd to hear an *angry* message. No one (who isn't an ass) has been anything less than supporting of the man's return to television, AFAIK.

My take on the whole deal is that Dick wanted to do the show, so he worked his ass off in therapy and by-God did it, and he did a fine job, too. He explained his condition very quickly from the get-go and then got right down to the business at hand. He's obviously not going to let it get in his way.

He said himself that he had to teach himself to walk and talk again. I say that since he's come this far in just a year, he'll be ready to rip on New Years Rockin' Eve 07.

What a pro, what a trouper, what a determined man he is. God bless him. He was awesome. Some men half his age couldn't have made the comeback that he did last night.

As a side note, it was Dick Clark's 2004 Larry King appearance where he disclosed his diabetes that led me to get checked out, and I was diagnosed with type-2 shortly thereafter. He very well may have saved my life, and for that I am forever grateful to him.

A lot has already been said about how Dick sounded, and I fell in the group who had that initial shock after hearing his first words, and then tears of joy that he was back. Honestly, I was expecting Dick to be sitting in a chair with hardly any movement at all, but to see him standing was a big sigh of relief!

I was also glad to see that Dick has taken the Christopher Reeve High Road by not letting a debilitating setback interfere with his life -- but then, I think all of us knew that Dick wouldn't have it any other way.

Dick Clark just doesn't seem to me to be the sort who would give a damn about the above in the first place.

I believe Robert's point is that the "quote" that Dr. Bear put in Dick's mouth (or mind, whatever) is unnecessarily hostile in that it implies that Dick has no interest whatsoever in what his audience thinks, and I doubt that's true.

That's a fair point, M.O. It's probably more accurate to say that after all this time, Dick thinks he has a relationship with his audience that is such that some physical imperfections shouldn't stand in the way. In reading your comment, I see that it may have come off as uncaring about the audience, and that's wrong - Clark is somebody who has always tried to provide something top quality, whether on Bandstand or Pyramid or whatever.

I'm ashamed to see what a glass-half-empty person I really am. I saw part of the show and I thought it was sad to see him working in a condition like that. (I thought he sounded kind of like he had a cold.) Reading this thread, though, I should have been glad that he was willing to make the effort, and, voice excepted, he seemed physically up to the task.
