The other reason you don't see more game shows in daytime?  The demographics are still too old, anecdotal instances of "TPIR" college groups aside.  The courtroom genre is as a group the best ratings performers of any syndicated genre--and their budgets are the same as a game show or less for much younger viewers.

To get a major trend going for game shows in syndication, a new one is going to have to pull Dr. Phil numbers--including demos.  If that happens--or if "Wheel" and "J!" ever decide to go off the air--we might be seeing more game show action.  And as Chris said, network daytime game shows are pretty much a dead issue now, except for "TPIR."  I even wonder if there'll still be network daytime in 10 years.

As for another Mark...I don't know if I'd go as far as you said when it comes to having to pull in ratings, I kinda agree with your point. But at the same time, I take a look at a show like Feud, which probably shoulda been cancelled a while ago...I don't know how much of a difference it'll make. But you are right. It's gonna take a decent hit to get the genre back again.

Network daytime will continue to exist for soaps and the morning news shows.  Soaps are the one genre for which a working woman will set her VCR.  As far as game shows, GSN provides a good daytime schedule for those who remember the halcyon days of network games.

Soaps will be on the networks in daytime forever, traditionally the only venue they have ever had (aside from the prime-time "soaps" of the '80s). You don't see soaps in prime access or early fringe or even syndication for that matter. Those have been the turf of game shows and other genres traditionally.

When "Desire" was announced, I went down the list of syndicated first-run soaps and noticed that there was no great track record there.  The two initial hits--"Mary Hartman Mary Hartman" and "Prisoner:  Cell Block H"--ran out of ratings steam after their initial success.  Neither one of those shows were also what you would call a conventional soap.  The rest of the list is not a good sign for 20th--and going to a novela-style, plot lines resolved every 13-to-26 weeks format didn't save "Port Charles"--but if they can pull it off, good for them.  It's one less court show.
