A paraphrase of something stated here by one of the mods:  A game show is a nonjudged competition for a tangible reward.

"Fear Factor" a game show?  You betcha.
"Amazing Race" a game show?  Yep.
"Survivor" a game show?  The tribe has spoken--no.
"Apprentice" a game show?  If you think so, you're fired.
"Idol" a game show?  Randy, Paula, Simon and the viewers are all judges.  It's a competition.  Competitions aren't necessarily game shows.

No, it's not competition.  It's fan favorite show.  You suck at singing, per Randy, Paula, and Simon, but with the right crowd and fast fingers, you can stay for several rounds.

Well, an Invisioner who shall remain nameless has previously declared lingerie ads and porn to be game shows.  American Idol's somewhat closer to the mark, at least. :-)

Ummm...I thought Debbie Does Dallas WAS a game show...see who can raise the most money, and the winner gets a trip to Dallas to cheer with the Cowboy cheerleaders. I loved that theme song!
