[quote name=\'pyrfan\' date=\'Jan 27 2006, 03:54 PM\']In the summer of 1987, game show broadcasts got thrown off because of the Iran Contra hearings. Sometimes the morning airing of "The $25,000 Pyramid" got bumped to 2:00 in the afternoon. In fact, "Pyramid" showed repeats for four weeks until the hearings were over.

"Super Password" was pre-empted once in May of that year, and they did tape a few four-day weeks to try to get back on track,

This is not a post to argue about news coverage taking precedence over daytime programming(CNN was not in as many homes in the 80s as it is now):

The Bill Cullen/Kim Miyori week of SP shows GSN is currently airing(1/27/86-1/31/86) saw the Tuesday show preempted for the Challenger disaster coverage in most of the country(it occurred at 11:50AM EST IIRC, 10 minutes before NBC stations were supposed to air SP on the East Coast). Did they tape a four show week at some point to make up for that pre-emption? A few Wordplay weeks didn't air Mon-Fri either IIRC.

Also, in the Summer of 1987, Card Sharks aired at 12:30PM EST on some days at the height of Iran-Contra, followed by TPIR, which was in reruns at the time, at 1PM EST. Seems odd, especially in this day and age, that CBS would preempt soaps for game shows.

I guess ABC never bothered to air the Bargain Hunters episodes preempted that Summer.

SP did tape a four-day week because of the Tuesday pre-emption of the Miyori/Cullen week. The upcoming Patty Duke/Nathan Cook week will only have four days.

Just to remind those of you who may have forgotten that the finale is slated to air Tuesday (1/31/06)--11AM ET/PT.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled snoozing.

Actually one reason they pre-empted the soaps was for the noon news.  CBS forces every affiliate to either have a noon news or fill half an hour.

CBS feeds out like this:

Feed #1:  Noon eastern:  Nothing  Y&R @ 12:30 eastern B&B @ 1:30 eastern
Feed #2:  Noon eastern: Y&R  1p eastern:  Nothing  1:30 pm  B&B 1:30 pm

They probably offered Card Sharks/TPIR since they didn't know exactly when the hearings would conclude, and with TPIR being in reruns, pre-empting it wasn't as big of a deal.  Pre-empting soaps gets viewers irate to say the least, namely Y&R/B&B.

Remember that B&B was the new soap on the block at the time, only having premiered on 3/23/87, three or four months before the Irangate hearings were cutting into programming. It was probably still gathering an audience at that point. Hadn't Y&R become the most watched soap by that time, however?

I'm going to count my lucky pennies that they aired the finale at all -- after all, it might have confused some viewers into thinking the show was really going off GSN's schedule  :)

Contestant plug, anyone?

There were only four weeks of those (Cullen then appeared for a fifth straight week, as Ludden returned).  The Ludden comeback week was pretty good.

I'd prefer they start from the beginning, personally.

Or pick up from the point in Kennedy's run where they were when they skipped head on 7/4/05, seeing that a lot of these Kennedy P+ shows are being seen for the first time since their NBC broadcasts.
