The story from CNN.com

The show, "Wowowee," is apparently a big-money giveaway show. Apparently they weren't opening the stadium gates fast enough and the crowd stampeded.
This isn't a plug, but you can ask me about my book.

I have The Filipino Channel, which is a part of a special a la carte service on DirecTV.

( Accurate game format on Wikipedia )

Saturday, February 4th, the show celebrated their one year anniversary.  I haven't watched the TiVo yet.  But after reading the Wikipedia article and pictures, they took the show on tour to a local city.

It's a damn shame.

That tragedy goes to show that people will go to extreme lengths just to get their hands on the equivalant to our mesely $384.  I wonder how security failed to recognize that the stadium would be "overbooked" so to speak.  Hopefully, nothing like that happens here, but if it does, definitely a headline-grabber for sure.

And that has to be one of the least expected headlines ever!

Right up there with "Furby wins run-off election, becomes Governor".

The Wikipedia article cited in passing the figure of 50,000 Philippine pesos, which according to an online currency converter is equivalent to $963.

Now of course, $963 may go a lot farther in the Philippines than in the USA.

But you're right, it's definitely a tragedy.

Something similar has happened here...ever hear of a band called The Who?

ObGameShow: The movie "Tommy", which dealt with pinball, came out the same year as "The Magnificent Marble Machine", which also dealt with pinball. Irony???? Coincidence???? Until someone declares CSI a game show, it's the best I could do. :-P
