Title: Would-be TPiR contestants subject of reality show.
Post by: ChrisLambert! on September 15, 2006, 10:44:16 PM
"Road to Price" to air on CBS' innertube (http://\"http://www.thefutoncritic.com/pr.aspx?id=20060915cbs01\")

Nine under-twentysomethings road-trip in a school bus from New Hampshire to Television City. We're expected to grow to love them over the six episodes of the series, and then root for one of them to get called to play when their ep airs on CBS 9/27.

Mercy.

Anyone wanna bet that if one of them gets on, they're going to bid $420 on their first one-bid?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if any prize in PIR history has been $420?

Good thing they don't have a model named Mary Jane...

Yep -- after this many years, it'd probably be difficult to find a three-digit number that hasn't been a price on the show. The most recent $420 was a pair of motorcycle helmets that aired late in season 34. They were in Safe Crackers, so they couldn't reward a lucky stoner with $500 cash.

So if one of them doesn't get called, it will be an anticlimax the size of Texas. If one of them does get called, it will reek of collusion. Am I missing something here?

Just when you think they've hit the bottom of the barrel ...

I don't think they are making Bone One about the fact that there's collusion involved. You can rest assured that one of them is getting called and that the rest of that studio audience is getting screwed with one fewer chance to get picked.

You'd think Standards and Practices would take umbrage with this, but I'm guessing they don't care until someone is actually standing in Contestant's Row.

Care to elaborate?  Chris and Chris make what I think are pretty good points.

Good points, yes.  I however tend to believe that they will not be picked for the show.

Exactly.  Nobody has ever disputed that producers have the right to cast whomever they wish as contestants.  Getting into Contestant's Row isn't a lottery-- you're specifically chosen by a producer, casting coordinator, or what-have-you.  I see nothing unethical or shady about this.  Feeding a contestant the correct retail price in advance, to "help" them out of Contestant's Row and into a pricing game, would be a completely different story.

Nor do I, but I feel for that audience, the majority of whom will be competing for eight potential contestant slots instead of the usual nine. A really minor point, sure, but one nonetheless.

So...what are they going to do?  Interview them after the show is over and ask them about the "letdown" of not appearing on stage?

Something to that effect, I believe!

Bottom line, this has already taped, been done, old news for a month or so now.

No, they should drop the show entirely, the concept for which is among the lamest I've seen in a long time.

I tend to agree.  To add to the fun, I believe that CBS wined them and dined them while in LA.  (Literally!)
