It's not a complete list, because I counted only 22 people, but it's the majority of them.... (http://\"http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2006-09-26-celeb-jeopardy-lineup_x.htm\") They didn't announce the matchups either, so let the speculation/dream matchup wish lists begin....

Jane Kaczmarek... that'll be interesting.

What? No Sean Connery? :)

Oh boy, Rachael Ray is on there too...Can hardly contain my excitement.
-
Now this is a celebrity line-up. Not quite the A-list names that Jeopardy was getting the first time around, but lots of interesting folk, including many personal favorites of mine (Schafer, Waterston, Short, Harris, Neuwirth) that I can't wait to see do this.
No idea about the pairings, but they theoretically could have a Savant-Denton-Fischer Desperate Housewives game.
-
Is it a good thing or a bad thing that I recognize about six names on the list?
Who the hell are:
Doug Savant, Christopher Meloni, Drew Lachey, Carson Kressley, Neil Patrick Harris, Jane Kaczmarek, Joely Fischer, Dana Delany, Mario Cantone, Steve Schirripa, Bebe Neuwirth, Sam Waterston
Are these some figures from the past, or current pop culture members that I am oblivious to?
-
I'll start.
Steve Schirripa (IIRC) is a comedian-type.
Bebe Neuwirth was Frasier Crane's ex-wife on "Frasier" and wife on "Cheers"...Lilith.
Don't know about the rest.

Wait...you don't recognize Neil Patrick Harris, a.k.a. "Doogie Howser"? He's now on "How I Met Your Mother".
-Savant-I think Melrose Place
-Meloni-Law and Order?
-Lachey-Nick's brother from 98 degrees, won "Dancing with the Stars" last year
-Kressley-Queer Eye
-Kaczmarek-Malcolm's mom from Malcolm in the Middle
-Fischer-on that new sitcom w/Brad Garrett
-Cantone-very flamboyant friend on Sex and the City, also seen in "Ask a Gay Guy" on Chappelle's Show, did some Donnymid eps.
-Waterston-Law and Order, Family Guy
Might know 'em if you see 'em. Nice list of folks though.

I am truly amazed, but here goes...
Doug Savant - Tom Scavo, Desperate Housewives, ABC; Matt Fielding, Melrose Place, Fox
Christopher Meloni - Det. Elliot Stabler, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, NBC
Drew Lachey - singer, 98 Degrees; co-champion, Dancing with the Stars, ABC
Carson Kressley - one of the experts (fashion?), Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Bravo
Neil Patrick Harris - Barney Stinson, How I Met Your Mother, CBS; Doogie Howser, M.D., ABC
Jane Kaczmarek - Lois, Malcolm in the Middle, Fox
Joely Fischer - Nina Fletcher, Desperate Housewives, ABC; Joy Stamm, 'Til Death, Fox
Dana Delany - Ellie Cain, Kidnapped, NBC; Nurse Colleen McMurphy, China Beach, ABC
Mario Cantone - Anthony Marantino, Sex and the City, HBO
Steve Schirripa - Bobby Bacala, The Sopranos, HBO
Bebe Neuwirth - ADA Tracey Kibre, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, NBC; Dr. Lilith Sternin, Frasier and Cheers, both NBC
Sam Waterston - EADA Jack McCoy, Law & Order, NBC
The last two surprise me most -- Waterston's been on that show for 12 years and been covered all over the media for it, and not knowing someone from both Cheers and Frasier... well, I guess they're too obscure for most. ;-)
(Disclaimer: I used IMDB.com to look up some character names. The only one for whom I had to look up the show name as well was Mario Cantone -- I knew I'd seen him recently but drew a blank on where.)

Where the hell did I say they weren't noteworthy? I simply stated that I didn't recognize them...as someone who doesn't watch much television or attend many movies, I really don't have any reason to know who they are.
Apparently, that makes my query invalid, in your eyes.

If I'm obsessed with anything, it's on calling out bullsh*t when I see it.

Watterson and Philbin have done Celebrity Jeopardy before...
I have a feeling they might do a Desperate Housewives matchup (Doug Savant, James Denton, and Joely Fisher have had multiple-episode roles on that show)
I'd love to see Rachael Ray and Regis Philbin in the same matchup....Ray will drive poor Regis nuts...
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, Isn't this Regis' third Celeb J! appearance?

As I pointed out on alt.fan.letterman (Paul Shaffer will be a player), Reege has been a player on Celeb J!. Alex said he came in last on both occasions.
Has Susan Lucci ever been on a game show before? I remember when FF was on ABC, there would be daytime stars from AMC, GH etc.

As much as I dislike Rachael Ray, that WOULD be cool to see.
PYLDude: I LOL'd at your "from" on your profile. :)

Rachel Ray & Regis Philbin would make for a very intresting match-up indeed. However, I'd throw in Curt Schilling to join them. While Rache & Regis try to verbally abuse each other, Curt'll go full steam ahead & let'em fly burying them. That's a match-up I'd like to see. I'm not that into celebrity J! unless Regis is on there.

As they say in quiz bowl, there is no shame, only points. There's nothing inherently good or bad about being completely clueless about popular culture, and really, not recognizing at least a few of those names is pretty clueless.
The tone of your original post was inescapably, "I don't know who those people are, therefore they must not be very famous." If you really are as out of touch with movies and TV as you now claim, you could have saved a lot of grief all the way down the line by just not contributing to this particular thread, or at least making it a lot clearer that you were genuinely asking for information. (For example, not every post has to include "the hell" in it.) Though if you've gone this long without knowing who Neil Patrick Harris, Sam Waterston and Bebe Neuwrith are, it seems unlikely that you would suddenly develop an interest in them.

This is known as Kidder 3:16 (after the person who coined the phrase), and is usually uttered as comfort to quiz bowl players who ring on questions that show a little too much knowledge on what some may consider a shameful topic, such as knowing Britney Spears lyrics. Ironically (I think...), we had a 'SPE' pop quiz on a QuizBusters episode we taped last night, sure enough, one of the players got 'Britney Spears' as one of the correct answers, looked embarassed about it, and I comforted her using that very phrase.

To me, Mr. Waterston will always be the astronaut who was on the mission with Mr. Brolin and Mr. Simpson that didn't really go to Mars.

Every time he was on Pyramid, I wanted to reach through the screen and smack him.
Cantone was just as bad when he was a guest programmer with Robert Osborne on TCM a while back, so I guess he's always that way.

According to Steve Beverly, here are the names the first press release left out:
Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent)
Hill Harper (CSI: NY)
Miguel Ferrer (Crossing Jordan)
Michael McKean (Laverne & Shirley)
Harry Shearer (The Simpsons)
Brian Stokes Mitchell (Broadway veteran)
Margaret Spellings (Secretary of Education)
Scott Turow (Mystery author)
Aside from those first two, minor supporting actors on popular series, this is still a B+ list. Fans of celebrity games from the late seventies and eighties will be happy to see Michael McKean and Brian Mitchell back in the fold.
