There's been an unusually light amount of chatter about The Rich List , which, according to the Times and some other papers, is premiering tonight at 9 PM ET on Fox.
Just didn't want y'all to miss it, which I was about to do but set the VCR in time. (And am now hoping I don't get some random episode of a show I care nothing about.)
Thus endeth the Public Service Announcement.

Yes, I can confirm it does air tonight at 9/8 Central on Fox. I brought my VCR to work to record it so I wouldn't miss recording Lost. Thanks for the reminder.
A lot of folks on this list tend to stay mostly quiet until something like this airs, unless someone reports back in advance from a taping. For instance I don't recall anyone ever announcing an exact date for the Price is Right premiere of its "Stack the Deck" game (if they did it flew by me) but as soon as it aired there was heavy discussion from people who were apparently not surprised to see it. I even got an email time stamped minutes before the show aired but saw it too late for me to set my DVR. Also there hasn't been quite as much hype about this as there has been about 1 Vs. 100.

Which goes to show that you don't watch Fox much. It's right behind Prison Break, 24 and House in the number of promos.

I meant hype outside of Fox. I work at a Fox affiliate so of course I know about the in-house promos.

Hey, speaking of, does anyone know if this will be broadcast in Glorious Hi-Def? :)

Probably a little late now that it aired, but not in HD.

Um, no, I can tell you right now that that's wrong, since I am in fact watching it in glorious HD even as we speak.

Well, no. But at this point in the game, when you have an HD set, you would like to see as much programming as possible broadcast in HD, because that's the only way we're gonna get people to make the switch, and once the switch is really made, you'll start to see shows taking advantage of that screen aspect ratio and such, instead of the half-assed way a lot of shows do it now. So I want to see HD wherever I can.

Interesting - when I asked FOX about that when they first announced the premiere date, I was told it would not be airing in HD.

Important to keep in mind the difference between "I was told that it wouldn't be in HD" and "Now that it aired...not in HD".

I hadn't seen it yet (not that I have HD anyway) and I was working under the assumption that my FOX contact was correct.

Well, I think what he was saying was that he didn't think I would find that information (which he believed to be correct) useful now that the show had already aired. I don't think he took the time-zone delay into account. If that's what the network told him (and I think it's _also_ important to keep in mind the difference between "asking the network, who should know", and "asking your local affiliate, who has as much chance as anyone of having no freakin' idea if they don't broadcast HD anyhow"), then it was an honest mistake.

Right on target, Chris.
And it was, in fact, the network that I was asking - I work for the company behind Zap2It (along with many other national listings guides) and I deal with programming for the 6 broadcast networks. The information I enter into our database goes directly into Zap and all of our other clients' listings, which is why I like to confirm info like HD with the networks. I was told it wasn't, so it wasn't indicated as HD for any of our clients. Looks like I'll have to ask my contact about it again when I go into work later today.
-
My apologies to Scott for misunderstanding. I just read the post as a firm fact that the program wasn't presented in HD (which was wrong, of course), when it might have been a little clearer from the start to say "I was TOLD it wasn't going to be in HD."

Wow, sounds like a huge boner (heh heh, he said "huge boner") on Fox's part to give you bad information, then. You would think they would want to trumpet HD all over the place if they could do it.
At any rate, thanks for the attempt to help, even if it didn't quite work out. :)

I'm sure Robert will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think his point was that lowering the cost of HDTV sets is another way to get people to switch to HD.

Oh, I'm not talking about end-users switching, I'm talking about the content-producers switching. (But I do realize the two are interconnected.) I was saying that once it's SOP for content producers to produce a 16x9 image, then at some point they'll stop doing this silly let's-block-for-4x3-but-we're-giving-you-16x9-isn't-that-great crap.
And really, it's not THAT linked to end-users. There's no reason they can't do the Conan thing and air shows in a letterboxed format. I strongly suspect that the majority of endusers aren't going to make the switch until they are forced to by the content. So I'd rather the content providers get that ball rolling instead of waiting for market share to go up first. 'Cuz it won't, unless they force the issue.

Real quick...I didn't see the show...but unless I'm completely off base....
Why is Eamonn Holmes in Cullen's spot?

Just taking the advice of several members who liked the variety of corner-denizens when we did the countdown. I'll mix it up a little, and I figured since we were talking about him, and since I have little doubt that the shelf life of The Rich List will be short, I thought we'd do him the honor since he won't be around for long.

Not on my computer it isn't. Just some guy with the Drew Carey glasses and haircut. Good lookin' fella, though. </not that there's anything...you know the rest>

In our area, we have an NBC affiliate that for whatever reason will not/can not show letterboxed shows in letterboxed format.
For example, I have seen 2 different episodes of SNL's new season -- you only see what appears in the center of the letterbox.
So when Don Pardo says Darrell Hammond's name in the open, flashy big ass graphic we get to see says:
ARREL
AMMON
I guess it's more important for them to blow $200,000 on a new news set than it is to fix a letterbox problem.
-
Chris: Ah, I see what you meant now. I glued the wrong antecedent to "the switch".
I would hope that that particular NBC affiliate is cropping the letterboxed images because they got a lot of complaints from stupid viewers. Not that that makes things much better.

When most of the discussion about a new gameshow revolves around whether it was broadcast in HD or not, you know it has serious problems.
My take:
- "Two strangers" gimmick adds nothing to game play
- Bidding process add nothing, and slows things down
- Discussion of answers by teams adds nothing, and slows things down
- There's no sense that the best team wins, an impression confirmed by the weak performance both times in the money round
- Did I mention it's slow?
There's a germ of a good idea here, but they didn't do enough development work. And when will primetime gameshow producers realize that a slow pace by itself doesn't equate to suspense and excitement? I wish one of them would realize that a fast pace can be suspenseful and exciting as well, as one long-running quiz show has proven.

I don't mind any of these so much. I do think they can be carried out more quickly, though. Also, I found the maingame lists to be slightly tougher (at least playing along at home) than the bonus game/whatever you want to call that round, so I have to believe (aside from the fact that I know more Oscar winners than the average person) that gut vs. nerves is also a factor in game play (like DoND). I heard the two guys throw around non-Oscar winners and actually talk themselves out of a couple of correct answers (like "Silence of the Lambs," definitely a Best Picture winner).

Well, really, that was just my own personal interest, I don't want it to reflect my opinion of the show. (Which, I agree, isn't good.)
- "Two strangers" gimmick adds nothing to game play
Agreed.

Certainly it's slow. I dunno that it adds nothing, it adds a little chrome that this show badly needs.
- Discussion of answers by teams adds nothing, and slows things down
Preach on.
- There's no sense that the best team wins, an impression confirmed by the weak performance both times in the money round
Well, yeah, when you have a format that is a simple two-of-three and you can fulfill wholly half of the victory conditions simply through one single instance of ineptitude by your opponents, that's going to happen.
- Did I mention it's slow?
I got that vibe, yes. :)
There's a germ of a good idea here,
It's a "just ok" concept that they appear not to have bothered to flesh out into an actual format.
