Title: What games should be played on Bob Barker's last show
Post by: chrispw1 on November 21, 2006, 12:37:52 AM
I was thinking of Bob Barker's farewell show next spring. I think it would be symbolic for his last pricing game to be any number since that was the game he started with. I also think that the other oldest games like grocery game should be played as well as the most popular ones like plinko and hole in one or two.

I agree that Any Number should definitely be played on the last show, but considering that they want to make Barker's last show very special, here's what I think should be played, in order...

First half
Golden Road
Plinko
Double Prices

Second Half
Triple Play
Grocery Game
Any Number

Ok, maybe the show would go bankrupt if both Golden Road AND Triple Play were on the same show and both games won, but notice that 2 of the pricing games are games that were played on the very first show.

I was actually hoping for somewhere along the lines of this list:

Golden Road
Punch A Bunch
Barker's Markers

Balance Game
Hole in One or Two
Barker's Bargain Bar

It actually makes a feasible lineup (except it would take a lot of time)

I'd go with

Golden Road, Triple Play, Lucky $even, Any Number, Grand game, Hole in One(or two), Master Key, and Check game.

Ok this is more or less than the Six played but some could be subbed.

I've thought that one of the newest games should be played, two of the oldest games should be played, and the other three be emensley popular. Here's what I had in mind:

-Golden Road
-Plinko
-Clock Game

-Double Prices (save time)
-Pocket Change, Stack the Deck, or Balance Game
-Any Number

In this case, Clock Game fits into both "one of the oldest" and "emensley popular" categories.

Five Price Tags
Clock Game
Grocery Game
Double Prices
Bonus Game
Any Number

The six oldest active games in reverse order...and amazingly, it times to 28 minutes, which is exactly how much time Roger allots for pricing games each day.

My first thought: who cares? And I don't mean that in a generally snarky way, but specifically that I've never understood caring so much about what games are played on special episodes, as long as the games don't stink up the place.

My second thought: Plinko is a virtual lock just for being the "big money" game everyone goes nuts over. Gotta play for a few expensive cars, too.

Here's my early picks(as always, subject to change):

Golden Road
Plinko
Double Prices
Comming or Going
Grocery Game
Any Number(just for old times sake, since it opened the very first show, naturally, it should be his last go at it in this slot)

I'm thinking they should bring back a retired game or two for Bob's last show, like Superball, Hit Me (just retired), Bump, or maybe Give or Keep. But if they ever sneak in Gallery Game, Split Decision, or Fortune Hunter at the last minute...

This falls under the "likelihood of happening is slim to none" category, but I'd like to see Bob's final show be retrospective, like Johnny Carson's last Tonight Show.  Otherwise, I agree with Robert and Chris.

With that good idea in mind, I can see it being more on the order of the 25th anniversary show.
Three games, clips, let's meet some people and show behind the scenes things and, of course, the Showcases.

Speaking of clips, I love the one where the contestant turns down $5000 in Punch-a-Bunch.  Bob and the audience plead with him to take the $5K, but he doesn't.  Instead, he ends up winning $10,000.

I think that's one of the best moments in the show's history.

Yeah, I can see a retrospective...a Bob Barker This Is Your Life (hey, he used to work for Edwards)...I can hear it now.

Rich Fields: Bob, remember this voice?
Offstage: I have a restraining order, and you'd better keep that graying arm hair off of me!
Bob: Nope, can't remember.

I think you'd be right about the primetime, but they're so putting it in May sweeps IMHO.  If I were them, it'd make a good Sunday night two-hour special.

If I had my druthers, I'd play:

Shower Game
It's Optional
On the Nose
Bullseye I
The Gallery Game
Give or Keep

Wait a sec.  If it's gonna be in primetime, that would be a special, not the last regular show.  The question is begged:  Should the last regular show be just a regular show?

This brings up a bit of a problem - unless they decide to have Bob's replacement do new episodes for the summer months, how do they do "Bob's last episode" in May if Bob-hosted episodes keep airing until September?  (Well, maybe then can show episodes from the length of the run and call it The Best Of TPIR.)  After all, I don't think they have ever acknowledged on the air that they go into reruns - in fact, I remember one year where Bob mentioned that it was "the last show of the season", but then he mentioned that "we keep right on taping", implying that there would be new episodes throughout the summer.

(Speaking of tapings, according to the CBS site, the week of 12/18-22 will be the first episodes to air that were taped after Bob announced his retirement on 10/31; the 10/31 taped episode itself airs on 1/4, and the 11/1 ep on 1/5.)

As for what I would put on the last episode:
Golden Road (or even Platinum Road - get the five-digit prize, and there's a six-digit prize at the end)
Plinko
something quick, like Double Prices or One Right Price (or, if they're generous, Most Expensive or One Wrong Price for three cars)
Lucky Seven (for a Three Strikes-level car)
some one-item quickie, like Balance Game (the new one) or Push Over
Grocery Game, IF they can get Janice to make a surprise appearance behind the register; otherwise, Hole in One or Two (there really should be one last "inspiration putt")

I think a 'best of Price' all summer is the appropriate and right thing to do.  Make each week of the summer a best of a given year, with the last week being 2006 and the last of the shows.

The final show should have:

Golden Road (I agree it should have a 6 digit prize)
Plinko (we know its a crowd favorite)
Hole In One (or Two or Three)

Barker's Markers (Or Barker's Bargain Bar)
Triple Play (gotta try to break the bank)
Check Game (the last contestant on stage should get the final big-ol check signed by Bob!)

True, but what's to say that Fremantle might try so save additional cash by offering less cash & cheaper prizes in addition to a cheaper contract for Bob's successor?  So if that's the case, then let Bob go out with a budget to exceed this season's premiere!

While I really dislike fantasy threads like this...there is absolutely no reason his last show should set to break the bank. Season premieres and MDS's are usually lacking in good contestant interaction to make way for the big prizes. Have some games Bob likes. He's said in several interviews how he likes "It's in the Bag" because of the contestant interaction and the all out drama it creates. Play that.

It's fallacious, but not for that reason. He's saying, since Any Number was the very first pricing game ever played, to make it the last one would bring everything full circle.

The problem is that the show's not going off the air after this episode. There will still be TPiR after this show is over. It'll be okay, folks. Really.

Right now, the only thing we know is that there will be the prime time tribute to Barker (which I assume will be May sweeps fodder).
Never happen, but I'd kill to see it be a roast. :)

Just have Bob and Dave co-host and do a transition mid-show....maybe have Bob hand over the mic to Dave with a quick ditty: "For all the shows you love the best...Keep your eyes on CBS"
Geez Louise, you've already awarded the job to someone who has never been seen on the air in the capacity of game show emcee.

The more and more I think about it, the more and more this could be either an OK transition or a transition on the level of Jane Pauley to Deborah Norville.

Sorry to be a realist, but there's not going to be a smooth transition.  For the show's sake, I hope it does.  However, this isn't "Today" we're talking about here.

Sorry that I'm grumpy about this, but that's what listening to Boers and Bernstein the day after a losing Bears' win gets you.

All two of us who understand the references thank you.  :)

You know, as long as it's a good and entertaining show, I don't think it'll matter what pricing games will be played. I think for a lot of people, just being one of the lucky last few to share the stage with Barker will far outweigh any prizes they may or may not win.

I have to say, though, I don't think I've ever looked forward nor been this excited to see a "farewell" episode (In a sense. In this case, it is a "farewell" to an era) ever. I'm really curious to see how it will all be done!

This brings up a bit of a problem - unless they decide to have Bob's replacement do new episodes for the summer months, how do they do "Bob's last episode" in May if Bob-hosted episodes keep airing until September?  (Well, maybe then can show episodes from the length of the run and call it The Best Of TPIR.)
I think a 'best of Price' all summer is the appropriate and right thing to do.  Make each week of the summer a best of a given year, with the last week being 2006 and the last of the shows.
Er, either summer needs to be 35 weeks long, or one year per week is going to be a problem...

Here's another idea: they should set a few episodes aside for "clip shows" where they show every retired game, as well as current games that were significantly different originally, either in rules (for example, the original version of Punch-A-Bunch with the Ones / Tens / Hundreds / Thousands slips - I don't mean things like "you can have digits 7-0 in Dice Game") or in set (or example, the Ferris wheel for Pick-A-Pair); since they don't need showcases or showcase showdowns, they can air nine pricing games (maybe ten, if they get rid of the IUFBs as well) per day.
My first thought was to use the debuts of each game, but for all I know, at least one game had a fur coat as a prize in its debut.

Hmm...I would be happier with full shows rather than clips.  Heck, most of the interesting stuff that has been either shortened or cut over the years (talking w/contestants before the IUFB, Bob's opening monologue, classic ticket plugs, the mid-show bumper...all that stuff) is really the classic stuff I'm more interested in.

I haven't seen many classic episodes of "Price" since, well, before Season 30...I'm thinking in the neighborhood of 5 classic shows (one from '75, '77, '82, '83, and sometime in the '90's.)  I'm sure I've seen many more in the '90's and early 2000's, but my memory is not that good.

And to expand on your last point...several games.  Any Number, Bonus Game, Double Prices (all episode #1), Clock Game, Double Bullseye (previously stated as "2 Player Bullseye", "2 Player Auction"), Money Game, and Give or Keep (last two I believe) to name a few...

Actually, I don't think that's what Don's saying...he's referring to the pricing games themselves, while you're talking about entire episodes.  I can confirm that no first playings of games up through at least Money Game involved fur coats.

All that seems like too much work for them. Best to leave it to entire episodes--maybe even just one corker of an episode for each year. If CBS did that, it would be more than we could hope for.
