From BuzzerBlog:
On Sunday, January 7th at 7PM ET, "Deal or No Deal" will add a new wrinkle to the game: Double or Nothing. Nothing is really known about how the US will handle it, but the Australian version of the show had it for a bit. In it, they could bet however much money they choose to from the amount they won and then pick a case. If they pick DOUBLE, they double the amount of the bet. If they pick NOTHING, they lose the amount they bet. So, hypothetically, if a person gambles $100,000 from the $250,000 they won: picking DOUBLE adds $200,000 to the player's total giving them $350,000. Picking NOTHING takes the $100,000 away leaving them with $150,000. Watch as Kathy Beck plays for $2,000,000 in a special "Grease" edition of "Deal or No Deal". Our version is getting really good, especially when we add game enhancing features like this.

NBC provided a picture of the bigass cases. (http://\"http://flashgameshows.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/donddon.jpg\") Four models for one case. Maybe if they get the double case a few models will come tumbling out of it. That little asian lady on the right audience pit is amusing me, though. She seems to be enjoying herself, or is on a heavy drug. I failed to mention this in the article also (I need to include this), but the Lucky Case game is worth $100,000, according to NBC.

I'm guessing they're supposed to be "slutty Sandy" from the end of Grease.
EDIT: Jason, a reminder, it's not a good idea to upstage a moderator. Next time, post your message one minute after mine, not before.
Shame on you.

So the sluttier they are, the more clothes they wear.
I trust they'll return to their purer ways for the next show.

They must be. I can't imagine what's game-enhancing about having the models wearing pants.
-

I wasn't being sarcastic. I think additions like Double or Nothing, some of the skits that have been going on with the Banker's models, plus the sudden addition of a bit of a personality from the Banker have made the game much more entertaining than it was at the end of last season. Not only that but we have really limited the amount of special prizes and surprises, which just got out of hand at, yet again, the end of the last season. It's not perfect by any means, but we are slowly improving in my opinion.
-
IMPROVING?!? I'm sorry, but I must respectively disagree here. That addition of Double or Nothing completely reeks of copycatysm from the Aussie version, and that was quickly axed after, what, a few measly months?
As for the models... where are the legs?!? I want them to wear those cute and skimpy Santa's helpers outfits all the time. ;-D

Except, you do realize, I fervently hope, that the only people who will notice this are about two hundred fervent game-show geeks, and their indignance will have exactly zero effect on the show's rating.
Oh, and one more thing: how come this is copying and us lifting Millionaire wholesale from the British version is heralded as one of the greatest friggin' game shows of all time?

The Double or Nothing thing is a good idea (although unless you have a real gambler, you probably won't see much gambled)...What I'd like to see is the "Chance" offered in the Oz version (a player takes a deal, then gets down to 2 cases-one larger (usually much larger) than the deal, and one smaller (usually much smaller) than the deal- the player can give back the deal they made for the original case)...It could be really tempting to give back say, a $80K deal for a 50/50 chance at $400K or $500...

Trotting out the Double would be good as a sweeps manuver and hopefully, this will only be done sparingly. Otherwise, this will just be overdone like half of everything else on the show.
I'd be interested in seeing how many people wager a part (not all) of their winnings in it. I'd put the over/under at 25% (of those who go Double/Nothing)

The way I read it was that Joe says 25% of the players will risk at least some of their money on the double or nothing, not 25% will bet it all.
Having seen most every Aussie Deal that has circulated through torrent sites over the past year, I recall three people betting it all, one won (doubled $100 to $200) and the others lost it all, one lost $2 while the other lost no more than $1000.
Like Travis, I enjoy the Supercase and would like to see it used in our version.

I'd say 10% of people will actually attempt this new wrinkle (they may be dumb, but they're not stupid), and of those that do, 25% will not bet it all.

The option to bet any or all of your winnings minimizes the effect of Double Or Nothing.
It should be like CS's Big Bet -- must risk at least half your money.

I actually liked D/N....version 2.
Version One on the aussie show had only one big case that either said Double or Nothing in it...To me, it reeked of producer tampering.
The second version had two cases with both, and the contestant picking the case he wanted. Much better.
Funny how some of you are complimenting a game for adding new wrinkles, when its becoming apparent that the original game, sans wrinkles, is probably getting stale to producers, and the audience for that matter. This is all they can do to keep it fresh.

For the record, promos show that the models will be wearing 50s poodle skirts at the top of the show--yes, it's all to promote "Grease: You're the One That I Want," starring your host Billy Bush, which will immediately follow. It's a fundamentally stupid concept. If the player is willing to take that risk, that player would still be opening cases-- where the odds of losing everything are smaller.

Again, it wasn't bad on the Australian show. (For those who don't know, on the Australian show, you could risk any part of your money, you didn't have to go all or nothing.)
But NBC, true to form, said "we need to simplify this" and never bothered to sit down and really think about whether it works in practice.

I think the Chance twist Austrailian DoND uses may have worked better here (she was left with $10 and $750K-the Banker could have offered her a 2nd chance at her case, giving back the 99K for it...)..but no one will ever take the DoN option unless they have a really small win, or they change the rules to allow them to gamble just a part of it (even a none-half-all option might entice some gambling)...

Grr...I thought that's how it worked here in the US. Didn't see the show, except for the last part, where all I saw was Howie instructing five of the models to open the megacase. Didn't know you had to go all in or not at all.
I agree...there needs to be a system where you can wager how much you want to double. I know, that if I had something like $350K (I know...a streatch for DoND contestants...), I'd probably risk like $25K or so...but not the whole bunch (again...a basic concept your average DoND contestant couldn't handle).

Which I think it a fundamental flaw with the genre at this point. Watch a tournament episode of $100,000 Pyramid. When the Winner's Circle is played, Dick Clark must have been paid every time he said "$100,000" because he reminded everyone about the potential payoff every thirteen seconds. $100,000 is still a Big Deal, it needs to be treated as such. Even on Millionaire, Regis would mention how rare it was to get someone that high up, when it was actually a rare thing.

That would be hilariously anticlimactic. Your huge average payout counts against you here really.

Monday nights are still solid. Wednesday's too soon to tell (especially with "Idol" on the horizon). Sunday night, it beat "60 Minutes" in the key demos and started a good evening for NBC until viewers saw Donald Trump at 9:30 and reached for the remote.
Speaking of which, TVG Interactive says that this Sunday night's "1v100" special will have Kenicke and Patty Simcox in the Mob (or Jeff Conaway and Susan Bruckner), along with members of Sha Na Na (I don't think including Jon Bauman) and former "Apprentice" contestants, including Omarosa. Whippy dippy.

Except that 1V100 probably won't air Sunday as scheduled--with Dubya speaking tomorrow apparently NBC is planning to air the displaced DoND in that slot.
At least there's a thread around here somewhere indicating that.

Correct - no 1 vs. 100 Sunday. I posted that in the DoND pre-emption thread. I'm guessing TVG just hasn't been updated yet to reflect that change (which was just made last night).

Did I also see on NBC that on the episode that was supposed to be on Sunday, 1v100 was supposed to have an "added twist" at the end of its game too? If so, lord, the C in NBC should stand for copy...
I'm with others, the wagering element in other countries would be better than a complete double or nothing on DoND. However, I think it's also possible if a "double or half" concept (2 cases: pick the wrong one, your winnings are cut in half) was used, there would likely be more takers.

There would be more takers if you offer 2 to one odds instead of even money?
Back for the exciting Speed Round on Masters Of The Obvious right...after...THIS!
(That said, the guy who just won $300K is not gonna play, no way, no how. And the person who won $9000 is going to regardless of whether it's all or half. Which is the basic problem.)
-
Well, as long as we're visiting the Dept. of the Super Obvious: I don't know why on earth anyone would go for double or nothing. Yes yes yes, a chance to walk away with twice as much money and all that, but there were people on this board who seriously believed that, given the choice of two remaining cases - a million and a penny - a contestant would go for it instead of taking the $500,000 or so the banker was bound to offer. (Not!)

Which gives Endemol their next idea for a game show.
"Celebrity Coin Flip"
/John Davidson could host.
//Though i'm sure he'd still screw up the rules.

[mutes Tim] I did that title already! I think it's time to end this before someone tries to work in "Soul Kiss".
On the Double or Nothing concept, I think someone proposed (minds out of the gutter!) that contestants could wager any or all of their case/deal. You know, like a Daily Double on steroids. In its current form, it won't work. After all, in the S4 end game on HSq, 94% of all contestants declined the double or nothing question. (I could be wrong on that stat; I got it from Stosh).

Thing is, assuming the stat (or something close to it) is true, that was a game where you were gambling on your ability to answer a question. Sure it was a risk, but a smart, confident player would at least have faith in his own strengths to affect the outcome. DoND's game is a 50/50 crapshoot.
I'm also not sure that a wagering element is all that much better. After seeing somebody win a bunch of money, is it really going to be all that interesting for us to see her wager a little of it?

Not really. Reason #14 (and if pressed I'm pretty sure I _could_ name 13 others) why the topheaviness of the board and the Mo' Money makes our version of the show suck.
DoND's game is a 50/50 crapshoot.
Let me see if I remember my gambling math correctly... the odds are straight up 50/50. The reward is double or nothing. Over the long term, half of the time the double will be chosen, resulting to two times the bet. Half of the time, the nothing will be chosen, resulting in nothing. The expected value is therefore the original bet, so the best choice is not to wager, since there is no long term gain to be had, correct?

Finally, someone who understands pot odds and why they don't apply to DoND. :)
