Title: Ende-mauling...
Post by: uncamark on January 18, 2007, 12:57:33 PM
NBC promo says that the Double or Nothing gimmick rears its ugly head again Sunday night on a 7 p.m. ep of "DOND."  (Is this going to be the regular Sunday nights, now?--and will the "1v100" with the "Grease" cast and the "Apprentice" alumni eventually air?)

And another promo says that "1v100" this Friday is "faster--more questions..."  Are they referring to the last format revision or is the format getting revised yet again?

And next Wednesday, TVG Interactive lists a "surprise" appearance from a 90s proto boy band.  All I will give as a clue is that they are on both AOL's lists of the 111 Wussiest Songs Ever *and* the 111 Worst Songs Ever.

If this is another revision, this would make what, the third or fourth format change for 1 vs. 100, and the show hasn't even been on for six months!

Of course, maybe if NBC would actually test the shows before rushing them on the air, they wouldn't have this problem, now would they? I like 1vC, but this is crazy.

/But, hey what do I know?

Oh and add Ende-maul to the list of nicknames.

I'm glad someone else picked up on the 1VC thing.  Maybe it was just my vision, but I could have sworn I saw a 5 in the tens or hundreds place, which is impossible under the current scoring format.  If we have another new scoring format, it's just sad.  I don't see what the big issue with the show is right now budget wise.  The only issue I have is that the game is horrendously stacked towards the One horrendously against the Mob, but that's not that hard to fix if they tried.  I'll be upset if they adjust the game to cancelation.  I really enjoy it, much more than DoND, but if it's changing again, it's just too much.

You know you're reading the Game Show Forum when people are complaining about a show whose primary problem is its glacial pace advertising a boost in tempo.

Looks like after 27 years, the "Play The Percentages" record may finally fall! :-P

/And PtP was based on 100 people as well...<cue Twilight Zone music>

I think 1 vs. 100 will air Sunday instead.

What about Joker's Wild?  As seen on the first weeks of the '72 CBS episodes, they had quite a few tweaks in the early going.

I'll go on record as saying I like 1 vs 100, despite its flaws.  I think it's the best of the current crop of primetime games (...which maybe isn't saying much...) and a little more fixing so that it's not so stacked in favor of the "one" would help it.  For starters, I still think each mob member should get something for each question they answer right (in addition to the "one's" money should they miss).  That way you don't have people spending hours on set answering 20-30 questions right and having nothing to show for it.

As a former 'mob' member, I knew going in the odds are stacked against the group. But after seeing the annoying blonde lose to the mob and winning for my efforts, odds or not; it only takes one question to lose on and the Conan drummer question was the one. Thank You blondie!

As a matter of fact, between tape days they came up with another rule that seemingly benefits the 1: the "Sneak Peek". When there are 10 or less mob members left in play, the 1 gets to peek at the next question and decide if they want to play or stop.

It's a flawed show sure... but I don't care, I won $$$!

Eh, that could be a lot worse.  At least it attempts to suck a player into playing if they have some remote idea.  It's better than the straight gamble without knowing anything.  I still think a much better alternative would be just to give the player the category of each level they are on, but maybe I'm alone.

So far I'm not seeing anything new...and no non-zero digits in the tens column.  Maybe they're just taking out more deliberation time.

About the only speed increase I saw tonight is that it's now taking less time for the Mob to select its answers.  Other than that, same screaming, different day.

After watching the show, I'd have to say that tonight's featured "performer" is in the early lead for 2007's Most Annoying Contestant.  Oh, sure, I could go into the Miss Fitness thing, thie disturbing, cavernous cleavage, but I think what made me want to reach through the screeen and give the backhand can best be summarized thusly:

"Number A."

Hey, I'm all for good, quality cleavage, but that stuff she was sporting was low rent.  Keeping in the spirit of the board, that gap was so wide, you could drop a Plinko chip down it.

How could she see over those things to press the buttons? Too bad she didn't win money to make them more cavernous...

As soon as she said that, I knew she'd be an early exit. The cleavage just made me hope it wouldn't be quite so soon.

Is it really so horrendously stacked?  Last episode, the mob won twice...what's been the percentage of wins/losses for the mob?

Also, in a game where the contestant can take as long as he likes, and can quit at any time, and where the mob has 5 seconds to answer, and has no choice to stop, I would expect that the One would win more often.

Actually, the mob gets 10 seconds. It's edited for TV. And yes, the contestant can take as long as they like. Grr. But, it's great hearing a contestant talk herself into a wrong answer while the mob holds its collective breath.

I see where you're going, I don't think you're getting my point I had in my mind.  I expect the One to win more often too, but I expect the mob to get something in return, which is happening more often now because the writers are embracing tougher questions; so, to a certain extent, you are correct as well as I.  The mob deserves something, whether it be $1,000 for every surviving member at the end of the game, the new One comes from the mob, the mob takes some of the player's bank if the player surrenders, just something.  We have far better players in the mob than we do as the One, and they are getting nothing to show for it besides their name and how many questions they've answered occasionally shown.  The tricky questions hinder only the mob with their 10 seconds to answer, because a player can easily figure out what's going on with as much time as they have.  A few seconds of camera time does not make up for the number of hours lost during the taping and the lack of money you get.

I'm not saying other versions are better either.  The British version has too many winners in its short time, and the One can't seem to win on the Dutch version.  No one has really found a happy medium between the two, and with this game, I don't think you really can, but I could be mistaken.  Don't get me wrong, I love 1VC.  I was pumped when it came to America, and I think our current batch of episodes are the best primetime game show episodes we've had in ages and is nearly the best version in the world, but eventually people are going to be sick of going to the mob and earning nothing beyond a number.  We've upped the difficulty a little bit, and it's helped the mob out a lot.  If they can keep the difficulty at a good level, I really think this problem can be fixed.

Edit: I just checked Wikipedia, and it says 11 "winners" VS 8 losers, and the majority of the eight losers have come from the newer batch of episodes where we toughened the game up a little bit.  Again, if we can keep this up, I'll be 100% fine with the show, since the mob is being rewarded with more losers and more money with the harder material.
