Title: Happy Anniversary, Charles Van Doren
Post by: MrBuddwing on March 11, 2007, 12:37:41 AM
Saw this AP Today in History entry for March 11 on Yahoo!:

In 1957, Charles Van Doren's 14-week run on the rigged NBC game show "Twenty-One" ended as he was "defeated" by attorney Vivienne Nearing; Van Doren's take was $129,000.

I especially like the quote marks around "defeated."

Anyone interested in the quiz scandal should watch Al Freedman's interview:

http://www.emmys.org/foundation/archive/interviews.php (http://\"http://www.emmys.org/foundation/archive/interviews.php\")

Freedman became producer of Twenty One during Herb Stempel's run.

Sadly, the nitwit who interviews Freedman has a bad habit of interrupting him in mid-thought, and never draws out Freedman on his opinion of Herbert Stempel.
