Title: "$1M Password"
Post by: DoorNumberFour on November 25, 2007, 07:20:22 PM
When I went to audition, two of the few things they didn't tell the group I was in were 1) when this show plans to tape its six(?) episodes, and 2) when those who auditioned could expect to hear back.

I found out the answer to #1 (January) via the other 1MPW thread, but #2 remains unanswered.

Has anyone heard back from the show yet, or has anyone who auditioned gotten a timeframe from the casting people?

'Cause I emailed them about it back when I got home the day of my audition, but no answer.

I was at the 11AM one on Saturday, and I thought I heard them tell someone they would be calling back late December, early January, to tape at the end of January.  But it all seems very up in the air, since they don't know when CBS wants the show.

I also heard that there may be more auditions this week, so if you didn't get a chance to try out a couple of weeks ago, you may want to call them again.

Got a callback as well...am scheduled for Thu @ 11, hopefully it'll go well.

During tryouts yesterday these are two types of gameplay mentioned in detail.

*A word that's worth a certain dollar value, like $700,000, and goes down each time until someone gets it.  Again, their words and dollar total which I'm guessing was pulled out of her ass.

*Seeing the Password, and deciding to keep your money or get your partner to say that word in 3 clues for $1,000,000.

They were explicitly clear during the casting process that they were CASTING, so the bigger sob story the better.  They said they'd love to get some janitors or someone like that on the show.  They aren't getting doctors or anyone in the entertainment business or anything like that.  Whether that holds true or not, we'll see.

I found it funny that when we did a test game, someone gave the clue "U.S." for the password "Patriotic".  Someone trying out was confused why that was legal since it's two words, and the casting people stated several times that it would be a legal clue.  Not shockingly they said the only Password experience the casting people had was watching some clips on YouTube.

I would be pleased as punch if the people who are really going to be judging gameplay do so in a manner faithful to the original rules. I mean, hardcore judging, by the book, "that's a form!", and not letting rules slide randomly (see Donnymid). Opposites, though...I was never a fan of that rule. But I wouldn't complain if it was there and enforced.

Aside: I knew Donnymid was in trouble when I auditioned for the show before it premiered. Producers mentioned that the show would be taking the qualifier part of the WC clues literally, meaning you wouldn't get credit for saying "Donald Trump" if the category was "Things Donald Trump Would Say." And the written test was designed and graded as such, they told us.

I sense a complete failure already....from the contestant angle to the (so far unknown) celebrity angle to the format angle.

Re: Contestant Selection...when did Endemol take over contestant selection for Fremantle?

I wtf'd. Leave it to a bunch of clueless Fremantle nimrods to screw this up before it even airs. Now they're working in cahoots with Endammitol.

Yeah, that's the part that gave me a sinking feeling about this revival.  I mean, there's got to be SOMEONE in the business who has actually seen a whole episode of (Super) Password (Plus) at one point or another.  Hell, Plus and Super air daily on GSN.  If they needed a reference point, why not just DVR a couple episodes instead of going off a bunch of random YouTube clips?

Oh yeah, because the contestants and their "heartwarming" backstories are more important than having a stable format to worth with.  That's right...

Wouldn't surprise me.  And Fremantle probably couldn't tell the difference.

Bobby Sherman is still around - probably a bit bored right now.

Don't lose hope. At last word, there were people at Fremantle with knowledge and respect for the show's legacy working on this revival. Let's hope their vision isn't tweaked and tinkered with by too many chefs in the kitchen, and by the powers that be. If it isn't, we may well be pleasantly surprised!

And, for that matter and as long as he's still amongst us, so's Bob Stewart, who thought up the whole idea in the first place 46 years ago.  At least Stewart went through the trouble of hiring an etymologist [Dr. Reason A. Goodwin] to determine whether a clue was acceptable or not.

According to Jefferson Graham, Bob Stewart has never seen Password Plus or Super Password (or ABC Password) "Not even five minutes. I have no interest" as Mr. Stewart was quoted in the book "Come On Down"

I wonder what his take is on 'Pyramid' and Lane 'Chain Reaction.'

If no one's told him about 'Pyramid' and Lane 'Chain Reaction' yet, I don't think anyone should, for his own sake.

Let's just not tell him they exist.

If the show keeps a Game Show Marathon-type of vibe, then I'll be fine with it. Except, 1) allow the contestants to shine, and 2) stop cutting to the audience so much.

Yeah, some of these revivals with too many tweaks are extra scary - but even the best blow them on occasion. Corresponding with Dan Enright before his passing, we both felt that the dismal response to TTD 90 had the potential of permanently branding the whole format as a failure that would never be considered by anyone for a future revival. When you mess with things like Password - well, it's one thing to consider such a format "iffy" for this day and time, but to do it so badly that no one would ever want to do anything with the game again... Please, God! Help them do it right!!

I am hoping that the people who called the shots on "Match Game 98," "Card Sharks" (clip chip version), "Whammy," and "Temptation" will be politely not chosen to work on this revival.

This is a really good point. If people think TPIR still gets its rating because it's so familiar, then somebody ought to try updating a show without updating it. Doesn't sound like that's how they'll do this one, though.
