Did any body watch it and Dick gotten any better?
[/quote]
Mr. Clark's speech is much better than it was last year. He looked happy to be on the show, and his count from 10 down before midnight was almost dead on.
-
I think Dick's speech since his stroke has slowly gotten better as time goes on.
-
It seemed to me that he seemed more mobile as well. If I remember from previous years, it seemed like he didn't have much mobility in one arm and he was seen holding a pen or something in it, but this year he seemed to have regained that. He did seem very happy to be there, and as was said, he was able to get through the countdown on time and without losing his breath like in previous years.
-
It was honestly very hard for me to watch. There's that same face, unchanged in so many years and without a sign anything could be wrong, so it kind of broke my heart to hear the voice. Sure he's improved but it still just left me a little bit sad.

Ten? He counted all the way back from 20 and didn't miss a number. Good for him.
I was watching with a lobby full of people at the bed and breakfast I was staying at this weekend and there was a lot of sympathy for the man. I am happy he made progress. Some stroke victims never even get as far as Mr. Clark has come in three years.
-
I was hoping he would sound a little better. I suppose there's a good chance that it's not going to *get* a lot better, and that's a bummer. I do find it interesting, though, that his first segment is always a little shaky, and then he gets better as (his part of) the night goes on. You'd think it would be the other way around.
That said, it was clearer than ever that his mind is still there, he was indeed WAY more mobile (to the point of gesticulating with both arms in his inimitable style) and he was having fun. And that's plenty good enough for me.
-
Agreed - the voice is not what it once was - but he still sounds a bit better than, say, Kirk Douglas. And it's clear the mind and personality are still there; he's just having a bit of trouble with the mechanics. And I agree - he looked very happy to be there and contribute.
-
BTW, where does the Prof get off saying the segments were pre-taped? If they were then ABC deserves credit for the best special effects ever because when his wife comes out the kiss him the camera moves. If the backgrounds were keyed it would have been obvious at that point.
-
I was very surprised. His speech sounds so much better as compared to last year. I just felt glad that he is looking and sounding a bit better.

Not necessarily (to wit: the keyed ads on baseball field padding, the first-and-ten line on football).
That said, they sure as hell looked live to me, too, and honestly, I couldn't see Dick doing the show if it wasn't. I would be interested in getting corroboration on this from someone who I can trust a little better than the Perfesser.
/and I would completely understand the Perfesser having a complex about Dick Clark

Not sure that's true. The Fergie stuff was taped weeks ago.
There is a scene where Dick and Ryan were in the same room (around 12:10), and Dick was giving Ryan crap for being out of breath after running up there....so I'd be willing to bet that Steve Beverly is wrong. Again.
-
Here's a Youtube clip from last nite. (http://\"http://youtube.com/watch?v=EqjIVQ-FYxE\") He does sound better from last year, and his recovery has been nothing short of amazing, esp. considering his age.
-
I think the way it works is that the non-NYC segments are taped, but everything else is live. But that's just what I think.
-
My only complaint (not about Dick) is that they only showed the last 20 seconds of the ball dropping. In previous years, they showed the entire minute-long drop.
-
I tuned in in time to catch his first appearance . . . and had to change the channel. And I fully accept that this is a failure on my part.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who noticed. I was wondering what was taking so long for the production crews to get to the ball...can't short-sight the other main aspect of the show.
As for Dick...the fact that he comes back every year to do this shows me his amazing level of commitment. This is HIS show...period. A Rockin' Eve without Dick Clark simply...sucks.
The Inquisitive One
/keep getting better, my friend.

OK, I know I'm over-alyalizing this because I'm such a fan of his, but I have to think that a minute of ball dropping with his (current) audio is just not good TV.
PLEASE don't take that the wrong way without hearing me out, look back to the 1989 ball drop on youtube, it's Dick ad-libbing over happy crowd and celebrating for 60 seconds. His current voice doesn't say "celebrate". One full minute of voicing-over crowd scenes? I think those days are done sadly.

Doubly annoying this year since the ball was brand-spanking new and prettied up and capable of all sorts of neato effects and such. But Narzo's point is a valid one, as well. (Although I'd certainly listen to him talk for a minute if he wants to.)
(That said, Dick Clark still produces the show. I'm guessing if Dick wants the shot on the ball for the full minute, Dick gets the shot on the ball for the full minute.)
-
Damn snowstorm...lost power as the 11PM hour rolled around and didn't get it back for a few hours. Good to see the YouTube clip...looks like Dick is doing good.
Maybe to resolve the whole "20 seconds of ball" thing...would it be so bad to have either Dick or the ball be in a picture-in-picture type thing in the corner of the screen (sorry...don't know a technical definition).
/agrees with the ball being uber-cool this year

My big gripe with that was ABC's overblown "Lost" promo. If it had gone any longer, ABC would have missed midnight for the first time ever.

Fixed that for you. :-)

First, I have to say that I haven't seen New Year's Rockin' eve since before Dick's Stroke..As my wife and I were home together (for once) on New Year's Eve, we decided to watch the "ball drop" and ring in the new year together. I honestly thought Dick's voice was noticeably slurred and was hard to follow at times..However, since many of you say he was better this year than other years, that makes me feel better about Dick..I really think that promo for "Lost" was way too long..
Editorial comment:Overhyping certain things, as TV networks are prone to do..just makes me not want to watch what they are hyping..

I love "Lost," and given that much of the show's appeal is based on surprise, yeah, that really blew.

Question: Has Rockin' Eve always started at 11:35? I was under the impression that it normally started earlier.

Before 35-minute newscasts (for some reason) became common, it started at 11:30.

That became common so local statons could fit an extra commercial or two..

At least KXAS/Dallas handles it better than WLWT/Cincinnati. Dallas' newscast goes right to the end. For Cincinnati, it's sports, then three minutes of commercials, then a quick weather close, and three more minutes of ads, and THEN Leno. Oh yeah, WCPO and WKRC are just as bad.

Is it possible that Cincinnati has determined that blocking out their show in that way generates the best revenue from sold ads? Sounds like they're stacking their ads to get as much time as possible in that five-minute window between 11:30 and the start of Leno. Makes perfect sense if they know that they inherit Leno viewers from other channels whose shows end at 11:30.

I will absolutely confirm that with no qualifications -- based on my closed-captioning experience, involving seeing tapes of "Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve" in mid-December. New Year's had already happened in Hollywood, but there were long stretches of blackness where the New York segments were going to be inserted live.
