Does anybody know what font was used for the scoreboards in the '50s version of Twenty One?
Thanks in advance.

Diodes and light bulbs.

A search for diodes (http://\"http://www.fonts.com/findfonts/mondosearchresults.htm?st=12&kid=Diodes\") and light bulbs (http://\"http://www.fonts.com/findfonts/mondosearchresults.htm?st=12&kid=%22light%20bulbs%22\") didn't produce anything. These had to be commonly downloadable fonts during the '50s...right?

I *almost* facepalmed. Then it hit me. (What can I say, it's late.)
So instead I offer this picture of Ted Knight wearing the worst-looking hat I've ever seen (http://\"http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5874/judgesmells5caet7.jpg\").
/looks good on him, though

Did he get a free bowl of soup with that hat?

Since it's more fun to snark than give an answer...
Obviously, it isn't a font. Look for Ryan Bugaj's "Display Field Guide"...there might be a font "based on" the scorebard.
-
I looked there. The closest I could find was the Ferranti Packer font. I figured it wasn't a modeled font, but perhaps one was emulated at some point? The reason I'm asking is that I'm making a Twenty One set recreation.
-
Sorry, I read your post too quickly. The font was a made-up one for scoreboard displays. The technology was diodes and light bulbs. It is a 5 x 8 matrix, unlike the 5 x 7 used on TPIR etc. You should be able to emulate it fairly easily, but those displays are not a simple undertaking to build.
-
Thanks. That's what I needed to know.
-
Kevin,
Contact me with some pics. I can make that font for you.

Thanks! I'll see what I can dummy up.

I got the zero, one, two, six and eight from YouTube clips. I can send you some ASCII art. You can look through YouTube clips to see if you can find the remaining characters.

Piece of shit goddamn fucking worthless In-fucking-vision software won't let me put up ASCII art in a monospaced font, even as code. I will email you with it.

Sure it does. 0 0
See? 0 0
All monospaced. 0 0
It's a pain in the ass, though.

Do these look like the numerals on the Twenty One readouts? No, they sure as hell don't.

There. Apparently, the first character in a line just needs to not be a space. Certainly not an optimal solution, but it does work.

If anyone comes across a clip of NBC Twenty One which shows the 3, 4, 5, 7 or 9, please post a link to it.

Using the score displays and the dollar display, and Chris's help, I was able to make what I think is a pretty reasonable replica for all the numbers. I'm not sure I even need a font now. I think the pictures I made will work just fine. Thanks for all the help!

How did Marty get the character set for the movie? If he didn't get it from kinescopes then he just made them up and they may or not be true to the original.
