Imagine this scenario:
A brand new game show is starting up. You are offered any position you choose on the staff. Director, make-up artist, host, contestant coordinator, anything.
What would you select, and why?
-
The only position on a game show that I would ever be interested in is host. Why? Because the host gets the biggest salary and the most attention. All other people can be replaced at the drop of a hat.

Hey, and you've got the right attitude for being "talent"...:-)
You're gonna need a director. Hey, whaddya know--I'm a director. And I'm a traditional director, which means if I'm directing Pyramid, I know the last thing the front game needs is lots of cuts back and forth. Nothin' wrong with a static shot if it carries the action.
(To this day, that is the one thing that made the Donny version unwatchable for me--the rest, I could take or leave, but that damn cutting back and forth...urgh.)
-
Producer...get my creative juices flowing. I love the idea of coming together and put together a show, starting from an idea, then seeing the ball rolling.

Announcer. I've been one for about 35 years, so I may as well do it on a good game show.
-
I've long said that my "dream job" would be the guy who comes up with the various challenges on shows like The Mole, The Amazing Race, and so on. I would enjoy doing that in any capacity on a game or quiz show.
-
My "dream Job" would be game board/scoreboard operator! Running the computer would be a real thrill!
Eric
(later on I'd be a host)
-
I want to be a question writer.
-
Dressing room assistant for the models. I would have said at DOND, but I'm too old for 26 of them.
-
Writing or judging, whichever is more critical to the show in question. (I'd put J! and P+/SP in the former category, Pyramid in the latter.)
-
I would want to be either a question writer or producer. The question writer position seems to be a perfect fit for me because it gives me the freedom to conjure up questions that are cleverly written and fairly rigid at the same time, and a producer's job expands one's creative mind of what a game show should look like and how it should be played.

Oh Oh, another Bob Barker in training?
To answer the question, I'd go with question writer as my first choice, contestant coordinator as the second choice.
-
I'd either direct or do something technical. I've got experience in running cameras and character generator.
-
Official Prize Tester. I'll make sure the Alaskan cruise isn't crap before we give it away. =)
-
Bouncer. Anyone in the audience shouts out or even whispers an answer, I grab by the throat, slam their head into the door, kick him in the azz down the stairs, again in the face and out the door.
Announcer's taken by geno, so I'll settle for hair stylist. I'll make ya look good, Jimmy.
-
Okay; wait...we've all got to pick different positions? Crap...and I was going to pick host! I mean, the reasons Jimmy mentioned for being a host are all great ones, but I'd like to be the host just because I think it'd be a lot of fun to be the one the cute female winners hug when they win stuff...;).
In all seriousness, though, I enjoy performing, and I definitely enjoy games, so why not?
But, if I'm forced to pick another job, I guess I could be the warm-up guy for pretty much the same reasons. And then I'd hire Don as my "assistant" to wail on those who don't follow my directions...;)

I'll run sound effects.
-
Dibs on audience warm-up, with apologies to the pro on this board. If I can get a bunch of high schoolers who hate math to at least crack a smile and get enthused about math on a daily basis, I can do the same with adults. The smile cracking part. I don't want to torture non-students with algebra if they don't need it.
ETA: Since we can share positions, I'd prefer announcing or writing. Warm-up would be fun.
-
Definitely host here, especially a quiz game.

$ale of the Century perhaps? ;-)

I call talent coordinator. I like the idea of being the main link between the celebs and the game itself, trying to coach them on the rules and nuances and how to become better players. That would fascinate me.

I know it's one, but I have to be greedy and pick two.
Being a copycat, I'd also would want to emcee. Growing up, I would daydream about putting myself in place of a host on TV. In my mind, I would create shows and mentally act them out from opening to end game. I also had a thing for having a red and blue deck of Bicycle playing cards and using them with my friends back then to play matches of Card Sharks. I guess that's why I've always seen myself with a Jim Perry style of hosting while wearing a Marc Summers Double Dare style wardrobe (Jeans, Dress shirt, tie, sport jacket and sneakers)
The other thing if I couldn't host, I would announce. I had originally planned on going into radio when I got out of high school because I thought I had a good mind for music, and I had always been told that I had a radio-quality voice, I just figured the two was a perfect match. However, I never was able to afford to go to school for it. Someday I still hope to do it, and now since many of the major companies that helped to consolidate ownership in radio throughout the last 1 1/2 decades are starting to sell some of those stations, perhaps they'll be room for one more voice in the announcer ranks.

I want to be Bill Todman. Just sit around in my cups in Florida while the dough piles up.
Except I don't drink.

-
If a show needed an announcer, I'd do it in a heartbeat because I have that announcer-type voice in me.
Also, no one's mentioned music composer yet, so I might as well call that. Music's in my blood so naturally, I'd come up with music that they would use for that show. Just as long as it doesn't get annoying in the loop department or create bad conflicts with certain parts of the game.

Okay; wait...we've all got to pick different positions? [/quote]That wasn't the intent at all. Y'all can take the same position, there just would be a few layoffs. :)
-
I'll take 'owner.'
For the same security offered by the first reply.
-
Bandleader. Yes, live music. And all the best musicians from Local 47 willing to work for union scale in my pit.
-
If it was one of the games I have designed, I would choose to be executive producer. Otherwise, I would host.
-
Letter turner. Ideally with technology that could somehow make the job easier.
-
My first choice would be host, but if that couldn't work out I'd probably choose music supervisor. Always loved (classic) game show music and would love to decide how and when it's used!

Thanks, Don. If I look good, the show will look good.
-
There was a time I would have said host, but "cooler heads have prevailed" and, control freak that I am, I'd go for (supervising) producer - the person the host turns to when some decision has to be made.

-
I'd go for either a substitute host or announcer. Chances are I'll probably announce for another game show down the hall and you'll probably need me at the last second.
If all else fails, I'd like to be part of the production staff, making sure the game is done right.
(I thought of being the "permanent" host, but seeing how there's a long line for that position, I've picked something else).

For me, it would depend on the show. If it's a simple format that doesn't ask too much of the host, then I could probably hold my own. But if I had to keep vamping and vamping to build up drama á la Howie Mandel, forget it.
If it's a show with a lot of copy, I would love to be the announcer. Especially if it's a show like TPIR where the host and announcer interact a lot. I would certainly be tempted to ad-lib á la Bob Hilton (but not too much).

While styling hair, I would ad lib a' la Larry Germain.
