Title: "I Guess You Had To Be There"...
Post by: TimK2003 on September 16, 2008, 09:45:15 AM
Here's a quick poll:

If you were given the chance to go back in time to be able to sit in the audience for a taping session for ONE game show of the past -- meaning the show and/or it's original host is not currently on the air, which one would it be?

I'd probably take any game that had the Cullen/Pardo tag-team -- see the best of both worlds at the same time!

The original "Match Game".  Studio 8-H, circa 1964.

But if I'm seven years old, and I'm visiting 30 Rock, I can't just attend one show.  I'd have to get there early for "Concentration", at the very least.

A November 1977 taping of GONG.  Stock bits now well established, Jaye P. Morgan and/or Jamie Farr on the panel, and Jack Clark subannouncing for Johnny Jacobs.  And the audiences were getting wilder and wilder.  Not to mention the acts.

Fleming Jeopardy!

/Concentration too, but that's second choice

TTTT with Garry, Bill, Peggy and Kitty with Larry Blyden as guest panelist.

Probably would have to go with an episode of Scrabble because I would want to see the actual Sprint Round board in action instead of the computer graphics that the viewers saw at home.  I also would want to attend a late 80's taping just to get an idea of what Chuck says to the audience at the end of the show, considering how the audience stops applauding to listen to it.

"The Moneymaze".

I'm torn between wanting to see celebrities and wanting a chance at being part of the proceedings.  However, being also a Barkerphile, I have to go for the latter and say Truth or Consequences.

Concentration... with GONG or the Moneymaze tied for second.

$ale, Scrabble, PYL [just to see their respective sets], $100K Pyramid [only to run up on stage after a 100K win], Super Password [or P+], probably more I can't think of at the moment.

Pyramid, any 1970's version

"Concentration" in 1961.

-"Match Game '75 or '76", right along the time the panel was at their peak.
-70s Pyramid, the NYC audience went absolutely nuts when someone won.

Match Game '75 and Card Sharks with Jim Perry.

Just so I can see their hosts get their trial by fire:

Music Bingo (Johnny Gilbert)
Video Village, circa 1961-62 (Monty Hall; and to give Eileen Barton what for!)
What's This Song (Wink Martindale; and to give Elaine Stewart likewise!)
The Big Showdown (Jim Peck; and the same to Heather Cunningham!)

My other choice would be Name That Tune, circa 1955-59

Non-game show choice: Shindig or Upbeat

Cordially,
Tammy

I'd choose the Press Your Luck Michael Larson episodes, mainly just so I could be there to see some of the hoopla that probably happened after the taping.

For me?  TPIR with Barker and the great Johnny O!  Late 70s, early 80s.  Actually, make that around 1983-1985 to see Dian and Holly.

Sign me up for a seat watching John Daly and the "What's My Line?" panel, please.

I'd like to know why people insist on ruining the spirit of the thread by naming multiple shows when the OP asked for one. Its what makes it challenging.

Anyhow, I'd like to have attended a taping of Diamond Head Game, for two reasons. One, I've never been outside the continental USA, and two, I could stare at the lovely Jane Nelson.

I honestly missed the one part, even in caps. I blame it on sleep deprivation becauzzzzzzzzzz..........

That being said, I choose 70s Pyramid.

Because people don't read. Period.

And anyone remotely regular around here ought to know better than to start a "name ONE" thread, because it invariably devolves when some jackbag posts his laundry list.

If I wanted to "be there", I'd say the 80's LMAD w/Monty Hall.  Maybe I be the lucky one of 36 traders to have at the "Door #4" wheel & maybe win a few thousand dollars(nevermind winning a car(& if I did, I would've given it to my oldest sister)).  The only way I'd fit in on that show was to go as a giant blue M&M my mom made for me when I went to a Halloween dance at a community college nearly 20 years ago.

While I'm tempted to pick a late episode of Dotto (just so I could stand up and scream "IT'S FIXED, YOU FOOLS! IT'S FIXED!") I'd have to say the last Daly WML?

(oh let's be honest, we all want to be in a TPIR audience on a day if we're guaranteed we'd be called to come on down)

I'd pick the original Family Feud with Dawson. It was on vacation the two times I was out in California in '77 and '78. I saw just about every other game show taping out there then, along with some sitcoms. For second choice, I'd pick The Gong Show with Chuckie Baby. I was actually offered tickets for that, but I turned it down and went to Disneyland that day.

I would pick The $XX,000 Pyramid from 1973-1981.  I grew up watching the '80s version (my pick for the greatest game show ever), but the '70s version seemed to be more fun for its in-studio audience.

Celebrity Sweepstakes......so I could push my button and vote for Carol Wayne.
Plus, I'd like to see what one of those tip sheets looked like.

"The Moneymaze".
[/quote]
Oh, it was a good time.  Kalter was a good guy, and almost everybody in the audience got a little camera time.  And you were right there -- I mean, three feet away from the maze runners.

And since I've never gotten to sit in on any LA-based shows, let's start with Tattletales.  Picking up $50 or so for clapping isn't a bad deal.

I sat in the audience of Jeopardy! back in 1987...

If I could go back in time, I would've really loved to see a taping of Bullseye with Jim Lange. I'm still awed everytime I see a video of that set in action.
