Thing is, I want Alton to make as much money from that show as he possibly can. And if that means sticking it out on the Sandra Lee Channel instead of taking it to public TV (which really is the only other logical place for it to go), then so be it. I have a Tivo, the distribution method for the show for me is really irrelevant. If nothing else, considering he produces one of the only quality shows on the network, he can probably milk them for cash pretty well. :)

I just want to go on record, appropos of nothing other than these quotes, as saying "I seriously lust Alton Brown!"

Re: the Food Network criticism, what's up? I've only been watching it a year or so (when my girlfriend has it on) and I find the shows entertaining enough. Iron Chef is good background noise, I like Ace of Cakes, and I'll watch Unwrapped, Food Network Challenge and Triple D occasionally. Is it the proliferation of reality stuff?

Yes.  There was a time when they actually ran shows about food without having some sort of trumped-up "competition" behind them.  And any network that puts "Sondra Lee" and "Food" in the same sentence -- let alone gives her a show -- should be run through the Cuisinart.

Thank you for saying that!  I am so glad I'm not the only viewer who hates the reality/competition shows that dominate the FoodNetwork p.m. lineup now.  What a hassle!  I LOVE TVFN but stop watching after the last real cooking show and don't turn it on again til the next morning. (Even Alton hosting Iron Chef can't get me to watch TVFN p.m.!)

To be honest, I don't "hate" Food Network as much as I may have implied, just isn't as good as it used to be. I think it has to do with decent people (Emril, Mario) getting the shaft, while the weak (Rachel, Sandra) are given the biggest attention.

Unwrapped is a harmless enough show (Though seeing a gray-haired Marc Summers is rather startling) and I rather enjoy Triple D (Even if Guy Fieri is a Triple-D-Bag). The others are tolerable at best. (Though I wish "Challenge" would do something else besides giant cakes)

And I enjoy TNFN too. :)

/My vote would be for Jeffrey.

What used to be on FoodTV: Alton Brown, Emeril Lagasse (before he turned into a cartoon), Ming Tsai, Mario Batali, Sara Moulton.

What is on Food TV now: Alton Brown...Sandra Lee, Rachael Ray, the Neelys, Sunny Anderson, Guy Fieri. (Sorry, he's a douche. Watch DDD more than occasionally and you'll agree.) And fourteen different travelogue shows instead of, you know, cooking.

Well, such is television. It's no longer enough to be knowledgeable and friendly on camera. BIG personalities cut through the clutter. Jim Cramer. Bill O'Reilly. Keith Olbermann. Most people on ESPN nowadays. I don't usually go for it, but with Jeremy Clarkson and Top Gear, I do. When he reviews a car, he doesn't always reach a logical conclusion...or any conclusion, but he's usually fun to watch.

As for the celeb list, I have to say it kinda makes me worry about Pyramid, to go off on a bit of a tangent. If these are the names for a primetime show, what will a daytime show yield?

Quoted for truth. I do get a kick out of Paula Deen once in a while, preferably when she's not putting, say, lasagna or cake into a deep fryer.

I went to see the late afternoon taping on Monday, August 3rd. Had to report at the studio at 3 pm. Got a ticket and came back at 4:20. Didn't get in till about 6 pm, the early taping ran late. The taping finished at 8:45 pm. I saw the seventh of eleven shows, it will air Monday August 17th.

Here's who appeared so far:

Show 1 - ???
Show 2 - Vanessa Williams
Show 3 - Sherri Shepard
Show 4 - Lauren Conrad
Show 5 - Shawn Johnson
Show 6 - Rachel Ray
Show 7 - Patricia Heaton
Show 8 - Snoop Dogg

Now for some tidbits:

The celeb questions are the last feature on each show. They are NOT timed, like the contestant questions are. The celeb can ask the expert or the audience for help.

The questions have the same time limit and amounts as Meredith's version. So the 10th question is $25,000, not $32,000. I figured for prime time it would've been $32,000.

The "Ask the Expert" Lifetime comes into play after the $1,000 question. The other lifelines are Ask the Audience, Phone a Friend and Double Dip - no 50/50.

A "whoosh" sound effect now accompanies the contestant's name and hometown when it appears and disappears from the screen.

Jodi Piccoult, best selling author was the "expert" at the taping I saw. She was called on twice and appeared via Skype from her New Hampshire home. There was "dropout" several times during her segments. Ken Jennings is the expert on Show # 8.

Patricia Heaton was supposed to be the celeb on the show I saw, but she taped her segment earlier. We saw Snoop Dogg. He asked the audience for help on his question - I will say no more.

On later shows, Regis will be seated at the beginning. This is because he pulled his groin because his misjudged the distance between his chair's footrest and the floor at an earlier taping. He told this to the audience before the taping began. So on later shows, Regis will do a "Cullen opening." He still walks to the chair and hops in it when a new contestant takes the hotseat.

The "fatest finger" segment IS back.

The top prize is $1 million. No escalating top prize.

So there you have it. I don't believe any of this reveals the outcome of the game.

GSN does not pay performers for any show seen in reruns on their network. Apparently it's the same for producers, as well.

Didn't want to make a new topic since we have this, but it appears WWTBAM could be doing full episodes on the ABC website. They already have some short previews of it. Given their history with putting their primetime shows on the web, this will be the first time a Regis version has been on abc.com

I know they did the "ITV" game back in the early 2000s, but "internet tv" was something that was still in the early stages with the 2004 remake.

Sidebar: They didn't close it down due to falling out of popularity (it was still packing full shows on weekends), but because so many of us local Annual Passholders were showing up day, after day, after day, to play - that we would even see repeat questions from other stacks from weeks before. In Flordia, it worked better because of the number of tourists. However, in CA - the issue was all the locals (or the 'dog pack' as we called ourselves), wouldn't stop playing. I loved the attraction, and loved the game, and was sad to see it go.
