1.8 rating last night is 'good enough' I guess... enough to start running it twice a week? I wonder how quickly NBC can inflict viewer burnout...
-
This is the same network who thought putting Jay Leno in primetime was a great idea. I think NBC is officially desperate.
-
Nah, I think the point of desperation is when they finally decide to bring back Concentration.
(For the record, here's a list detailing where the rights to Barry-Enright games have gone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_%26_Enright_Productions#Ownership_of_properties) -- NBC has quite a few other games they haven't touched.)

Can't sleep, rebus'll eat me.

how is NBC desperately trying to avoid airing Concentration?
When NBC canned Later Today in August 2000, they mulled over bringing back Concentration; two months later, they decided to extend Today to three hours. In January 2007, they announced that Passions would be canned and Today was given a fourth hour.
NBC's had quite a few opportunities between 1991 and 2010 to revive Concentration, although they evidently thought it good to slap repeats on from 1991-93. They've canned some daytime shows in the interim, only to either give back the slot to affiliates or expand Today.
As such, it seems to me that NBC is actively trying to avoid reviving a show that would undoubtedly attract people -- and let's face it, the network really needs eyeballs. It's more or less the Fred Silverman era all over again.
-
Or, more likely, they determined (and probably rightly) that Hour #54210437852 of Today would draw more viewers than Concentration.

[/quote]
Umm, yeah okay, that too. My point stands-they thought that putting Jay Leno on 100 minutes earlier, five nights a week, was the next revolutionary idea. They also said they were sticking with said idea for the long haul, yet the show lasted less than six months, and NBC is back to airing dramas on most nights (not counting Marriage Ref. But, hey, they saved $10-15 million, good job right, Zuck? (sarcastic thumbs up)

I do remember them considering it back in 2000, right when Millionaire was taking off, and 21 was showing its potential. This ATGS post (http://\"http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.game-shows/browse_thread/thread/7bc36f10914e4c7a/78831e8fb64940c7?lnk=gst&q=Concentration+Variety#78831e8fb64940c7\") mentioned a Variety article.
And here's the article from March 2000. (http://\"http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117779543.html?categoryid=14&cs=1&query=NBC+Concentration\") As I suspected, the announcement was from earlier in the year, as 21 was canned by Memorial Day.

And doesn't come any closer to confirming Dan's claim than "we're looking at classic formats we own the rights to." Which may or may not include Concentration.

I don't think there were any available slots in daytime until Later Today was canned in August. It seems like NBC News has quite some power, given that they make up 80% of NBC's current daytime schedule.

Frankly, I'm getting tired of every time someone relates an obscurity and he's called Zach. I know plenty of obscure stuff that could be of use in threads, but maybe I'll just keep it to myself if the reward is to be lumped in with That Guy.

With pleasure. YMMV, but for me there is relating an obscurity, and then there is trying to impress everyone and throwing in the "OF COURSE you must know THIS" attitude for emphasis. For as long as I've known you, you've never done the latter.

Thanks...I think? :o
YMMV, but for me there is relating an obscurity, and then there is trying to impress everyone and throwing in the "OF COURSE you must know THIS" attitude for emphasis.
I didn't exactly relate an obscurity with mentioning Days, nor was I intending to use a stupid and foolish attitude. Those who watch NBC, or visit their website, know that the network airs only two programs on their five-hour daytime feed: Today and Days.
And frankly, using sources of questionable nature is wrong. It was stupid of me to do so, and I apologize for that.

I have no doubt it wasn't your intent, since you very obviously want badly to be accepted and liked here.
Very, very badly.

As long as the distinction is there, if someone can't keep their nose parallel to the ground when relating a tidbit, fire away.

I think it's great to have new blood on the board too. But Dan, holy craps man, you need to take a step back and re-examine your presence on this board.
You seem to be a smart guy who writes well. Now, you need to pay attention to what goes on here. Carefully read about 50 or 60 threads on the board from before you arrived on the scene. See how the discussion goes? Follow that social norm (as socially normal as a game show discussion board can be), be an active participant without spouting odd attempted-humor garbage, and you might be surprised how quickly we all forget about the weirdness that has been Dan88 so far.

Because I sometimes don't think before I act. And, since I feel like somebody here is thinking it, no I'm not a troll. I'm strongly against those kinds of morons, mainly because of the sickening sh(ooh-la-la!) they've posted on YouTube about me (using my words out of context, and twisting them to mean the complete opposite of what I intended).

I'm not a cool guy, but I can share this sentiment. This is why I signed up here, and the site makes me proud to love game shows. As for joking around, I've tried that on this site and failed almost every time. (Unless I joke about myself, which is easy for me.)
And in the game show fandom, I'm certainly devoted to collecting rare and unusual stuff -- I've made two playlists on YouTube devoted to collecting the 150+ television pilots and pilot clips scattered around the site. I guess that makes me...unique?
/in my opinion ;)

To go back to the original topic: here's the thing. I don't care about the show. The stunts are sorta fun to watch, but what happens when you can't get a stereotype contestant like Baron von Manpurse to play? I admit that it would look very like Beat the Brooding Clock, but I would like to see an episode start with four players. Some stunts are races which payoff to varying degrees based on placement, some that reward everyone that finishes the task in time, and so on. Cut the low-scorer at :30, and again just before the Final Challenge where the two finalists play one stunt to see who wins their prize fund. For an actual bonus game, allow the winner to double, triple or quintuple his take on a final stunt based on whatever level of difficulty he's comfortable with. Bring out the giant check, everyone is happy, and I stick around for whatever comes next.
I yearn for the days when there was an entry process to get to the main game and a bonus game that wasn't nine-tenths of the whole proceedings. I want contestants that are like my neighbors, or at least they could be my neighbors, and not from Central Casting Incorporated. I don't mind huge jackpots if they're difficult to win but I want there to be some level of excitement. I don't want "Aw, your game is over but you win $50,000!" to become commonplace.
