Title: GUTS: A Young Adult Television Fiasco
Post by: trainman on March 27, 2011, 08:30:34 PM
Best game show-related thing I've seen in a while: a recollection from a "GUTS" contestant, in graphic novel form (http://www.topshelfcomix.com/ts2.0/guts/).

Contestant notices for GUTS read "American Gladiators for kids." Wow. Well, at least there aren't any jokes about Mike O'Malley's career post Nickelodeon.

Poor kid.

What you call "Best", I call "Disturbingly in need of therapy".

If that was supposed to be satirically humorous, I didn't see it. I hope I'm wrong on that.

That is absolutely wonderful.

Love the part about he shows it to his students.

I don't think it was supposed to be laugh-out-loud humorous, but I can certainly see the humor in it. It was a method for telling a story, and to that end it was very successful and creative.

I thought it was great. A well-told story about being a kid on a game show. Pretty interesting ending. Hope Regan finds him. :)

Just in case any of you were wondering, here is the episode in question:

I liked the novel...until I got to the last page. I felt sorrow, pity, and a little disturbed. Sure, I know what it's like to be a 12 year old boy, quickly develop a crush on a girl, and never see her again. But jeez...I dunno....that last page still seemed a little stalkerish.

Thanks for the clips.

I didn't read it as stalkerish at all. I read that last line as the 12 year old boy in him speaking, not him as a man. And hitting someone up on Facebook is as inocuous as anything can be, in my opinion.

Heh. He lost to two girls. ;-)

I keed, but yeah, 12-year-old me would've been bummed too. Not so sure I believe the part about being mocked at school, although it's not impossible.

Yeah, because middle school is such a nuturing environment...

As a 12-year-old who only lost to one girl on national TV, I promise you, it happens. (You just have to have the arsenal to fire back.)

An internet to Jason, stat.

/Might start using "What's your Coryat score, baby?" as a pick-up line
//Not like anything else has worked wonders...

Funny, I woulda thought the "Hardball" pick-up lines wrote themselves...

/I move to grant "What's your Coryat score, bitch" meme status

Nope.  Telling the ladies I have had a "Hardball experience" typically ends conversations or produces comments about how I might like their brothers...

"What's your Coryat score, bitch"
I cannot read this line without doing so mentally in Dave Chappelle's Rick James voice.

I just checked, and it turns out Chad's Coryat is a lot bigger than mine.

I find this...disturbing.

I guess all is forgiven for this TV classic (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mike_O%27Malley_Show"), huh?
