According to Chuck Donegan's site, the syndicated version had two different premiere episodes. Why on Earth would the syndicated version have two different premieres, and what's the difference between the two?

All ex rectum, but my guess is the bicycling process...sounds like one market would get one cycle of episodes, while another market would get a different set. Dunno what happened when the "opposite" premiere aired, though.

The problem with bicycling in this instance is that you have the issue of carryover champions. You can't really have someone on the brink of winning a car and then flip over to another series of episodes, can you? In this case I'm going to rely on that old saw: Proof or Not Real.

I remembered watching one of the [syndicated] premieres of Tic Tac Dough, in which, prior to the main title and Jay Stewart's intro, Wink Martindale told viewers that the premiere would pick up from an untelevised episode in which one Stephanie Greenberg [I hope she wasn't related to Ron, lest she have been disqualified] was the returning champion.
The bad thing was, because of the bicycling, I didn't get to see it where I lived [Tampa Bay area] until the fall of 1979.

The other premiere episode that I just got done watching (which is on YouTube) ended with returning champion Carla Pales and challenger Jason Cursky in the middle of a game.
