CBS is airing something called the Merrill Lynch Celebrity Ski Classic today...and Chuck Woolery presides over a trivia quiz from a lodge with sports celebrities (and it's got the classic J! theme, too!)
If you haven't seen it in your area, go check it out.
Brian
Wary blue waters?
We want some more pro wrestling (STILL) and NASCAR questions!
-
Brian, I have asked this before and I'm asking again.
What is the point of the tag lines you litter your posts with, here and on Usenet boards like alt.fan.letterman, such as:
"Mariah Carey and Glitter jokes, please!"
"We want some more pro wrestling (STILL) and NASCAR questions! "
Who is "we" and what is the point of this crap?
-
Brian, don't answer that.
Melman: why does everyone have to justify or explain themselves to you?
-
Melman: why does everyone have to justify or explain themselves to you?
Because everyone must explain himself or herself to Larry "Bud" Melman. It's part of Letterman's shtick, y'know.
What? Wrong Melman? Okay, then, Dave's right. :-)

I don't want to know either. Besides, Mariah Carey and Glitter were soooo last year.
J-Lo and Gigli jokes, please! [ducking]

Because you asked. :-)
"I just got home from watching Gigli, and here's the weird part, by the time I got home, it was already on cable." -Letterman
ObGameShow: David Letterman made a couple game show appearances.

Glitter jokes, please
Glitter was a joke. Lasted only about six weeks in primetime in 1984 on ABC.
One of the cast members of Glitter was Arte Johnson, regular panelist on The Gong Show and the star of Knockout.

Unless I'm missing something, I think he was referring to the 2001 disaster of a movie "Glitter," not the 1984 ABC series.

Melman: why does everyone have to justify or explain themselves to you?
Excuse me? He can't answer for himself? This is that terrible a question? Are you Brian's agent? Or just self-appointed judge and jury of what makes an appropriate question? Because I just didn't get that memo.
Anything that gets posted is fair game. Isn't it? I've asked Brian about this a couple of times privately, and now twice on a forum. So far, he hasn't even acknowledged the question. (But you have.)
What is this really about? Wouldn't have to do with some questions about a certain gushing fansite for a home-decorating show, would it? (Otherwise, I don't see what the "everyone" fuss is.)
("Mr. Melman is not an attorney." ... "Ask Mr. Melman, _Late Night with Dave_.")

Boy, this topic surely degenerated into a farce...I was hoping that we would talk about Chuck Woolery being on CBS today.

And you were watching this instead of the 49ers/Bengals game today? The Bengals field a real competitive team for the first time in God knows how long (and no, Zach, don't tell me) and you're watching skiing?! And moreover, celebrity skiing??!! As Woolery would say, Jimi-nee. . . :)

I think Melman's point is that it's an inane signature and that it presumes to speak for a global "we" that Henke is not qualified in any way, shape, or form to speak for. I, for one, could care less if I ever see a NASCAR or pro wrestling question on a game show ever again.

I agree with Chris here, those two so-called "sports" I consider a very minute minority, even though wrestling has a fan base, I still consider it a minority. I just don't get the point. To not get off-topic, I do not believe the general public would even care to see such questions, or would even knows the answers to them. And yet, he STILL wants to see those questions!

This is slowly degenerating off-topic.
However, to dispute Nick's post, raings wise, NASCAR is ahead of the NHL, and, excluding the finals, the NBA. They've been known to beat the MLB, but get trounced by the NFL.
That part of your reasoning is flawed.
That said, however, generally, I've noticed sports questions are left out of general interest game shows (excluding Jeopardy!) for the most part. I don't remember but a handful on WWTBAM.
Also, I have stated this before: Do we have to make mention of every thing remotely gameshow related? Oh my gosh! Our football coach said we're going to have a Two Minute Drill today! This makes it on topic....not.
To close this post: The signature is inane; as others have mentioned; you are not the board spokesperson. A signature that read "I want more NASCAR and WWE questions" would be proper.
-
*grabbing my signature and stuffing it down an Iraqi spider hole for safe keeping*
Folks, if it bothers you that much, don't read the line. We all have our quirks, and that's his, and if a quirk bothers you that much, maybe you need a talk with your shrink on why you can't accept differences other people have.
-
I know they're just an inane signature. But they've been on his posts for... well, forever. And I've never seen a single response. I just wonder why he needs this information, why he asks in places that are completely off-topic, and what he would do with any replies. That is, if he ever got any - since the World at Large seems to generally ignore him.
It's not a matter of accepting or ignoring anything. I don't see any harm in asking "what's the deal". That's all. I'd think he could answer for himself. Unless the intent is just to be a troll.

Henke is not and never was a troll. His Nascar and WWF-related signatures and posts were cause for flaming back on Usenet, most of which was uncalled for since most of his posts were at least a little bit on-topic. When Henke asks a game show relevant question or makes a game show relevant post, he usually gets an appropriate response like everyone else does.

To SRIV94:
I think the Woolery appearance was on during halftime of the CBS skiing event. Remember, I was just saying that he was doing a quiz segment during the skiing event and they were using the classic J! theme.

You know what? I wouldn't have half the problem with it if IT WAS IN FACT PROGRAMMED AS A SIGNATURE. There is a function in this board software to set the signature to be added to the bottom of a messageat the bottom of a message, AND there is a function to turn signatures off so you don't have to read them if you don't want to. Instead, he types/pastes/whatever that moronic statement into every message, as plain text, and those of us who actually take the time to learn how the system works couldn't get rid of it if we wanted to.
Frankly, I think the fact that he is obviously ignoring Melman's quite reasonable question speaks volumes.

No biggie. As I said, if the football team in my area had been going through a resurgence the way the Bengals have been I'd be more apt to watch the football game rather than a celebrity skiing event (although my team did win yesterday--for once). This doesn't take away from Woolery's appearance, but I'd be surprised if many people had seen it period (while most of the nation got it after CBS' football game [you were in one of a few markets that got it BEFORE the game--as it turned out, so was I]--Fox's doubleheader games were probably attractive enough to have CBS football viewers switch over instead of stay with the skiing).
I realize not everyone is a football fan, and there's a market (albeit small) for programming like this to counter the NFL. It's a tough sell at any rate.

I for one absolutely hate Wrestling and anyone I've ever known who is a fan of wrestling has had an IQ no higher than 80. I don't care much more for Nascar either. Anyone I've ever known who likes Nascar seems to be a Drunk. Two very Boring Sports in my opinion. As for Chuck Woolery doing a special segment on CBS. That's great........ unlike Wrestling and Nascar which I prefer to see much less of. :-)

This is exactly why a small sports section wouldn't hurt on the board. A core groupf of gameshow fans could also talk about sports, as many of enjoy them.
As for John's assertion, I'm only 19--and am not a drunk, and I don't think Chris Lambert and Doug Morris are either.
As far as Chuck Woolery is concerned--is he still selling that fishing lure??

Not even a sports section, but just a general off-topic forum that was proposed a few months ago. This way, no one would be upset when I make a post saying "I was born in Norfolk, Virginia, but this is on topic because Wheel of Fortune taped there in 1995." :-)
Seriously, though, an OT forum might actually make for some intelligent conversations, and allow some of us to show that we're not strictly game show geeks (i.e. Saddam's capture). I've seen it done at some of the other message boards I visit? Matt?....Chris?
ObGameShow: I was born in Norfolk, Virginia...Wheel of Fortune tapd there in 1995.

My two cents, I think a wide-open Off-topic forum is a bad idea. The best thing about these forums is that they stay on-topic so well.
GSN has an off-topic forum, which is as bad as atgs if not worse. And it's given rise to a number of "proboards" forums which seem to be even worse.
-

I'm sorry to hear that you choose to affiliate yourself largely with the intoxicated and mentally disadvantaged, then, because like with any other interest, I've seen intelligent wrestling fans, and some not so intelligent. And I've seen bright NASCAR fans, and some not so bright. The fact that "everyone you've ever known" seems to fall at the lesser ends of these spectrums makes me wonder about your acquaintances.
This was an utterly asinine comment, and I think it speaks volumes about the OP.
Matt and Chris, as the folks who pay the bills, have chosen not to fund an off-topic forum. This is their right, they're not gonna change their minds, and the sooner you folks accept this the better off you will be.

When you consider that some of the folks here have journals at livejournal.com (me included), that seems to be a good compromise. Meeting folks in here (and at ATGS and EZBoard) drew me to LJ and I've enjoyed learning more about them. Besides; Matt and Chris did buy the bat and ball, not to mention the sandlot, and they get to set the rules. Pontificate about game shows here; pontificate about the rest of the world elsewhere. And as for NASCAR being for "drunks:"
1. My wife, who got me hooked on it, has had maybe three drinks in her entire life
2. I don't drink because of diabetes
3. The NASCAR drivers were recently at the White House. I thought George W. had given up the booze.

I was taking peeks at the skiing during commercial breaks in the Packers game (well, y'know I was in Wisconsin don'cha know, ya-hey dere). Didn't see Chuck but did see Summer Sanders of "Figure It Out" and "Beg, Borrow or Deal 2" fame hosting the telecast.
And I realized that TWI actually produced the show and Summer's a free-lance, but it seems to me that she wouldn't be on CBS if she wanted to do the 2004 Olympics for NBC--or perhaps she doesn't want to be the swimming commentator and has already decided that Melissa Stark has already got whatever female hosting jobs are available for the Peacock Network (with Hannah Storm over at CBS now).
Maybe.

All network affiliations pretty much go out the window when the Olympics roll around anymore. Consider: Gary Thorne and Bill Clement called the US hockey games at Salt Lake in 2002, and they're normally Disney property. It wouldn't surprise me to find Bob Ley calling the soccer in Athens, or Dick Stockton working in some capacity....

Reading this made me think of something else. Is it possible to add:

I'd think the way to do this would be to either a) link it to the WWW button, or b) put it in your signature. I lean towards b) because it would give you greater flexibility...they could hit the WWW button to go to your page, or hit the link in your sig to go to LiveJournal.
