Title: Host-Isms
Post by: Don Howard on December 31, 2003, 04:10:09 AM
There are certain things that many of our favorite emcees say that are uniquely theirs. Examples are Bob Eubanks saying, "I just want you to know that", Alex Trebek's "You'll have a full 30 seconds" (as opposed to a partial 30 seconds) and Allen Ludden's "____ is one of the best players we've around here in quite some time". How many come to your mind?

There's a whole ton of "Barker-isms" on a golden-road.net thread (http://\"http://www.golden-road.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=261&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=%2Aism&sid=d50fef83e3587fcf1f2c0d215f8de500\").

I really want to give Geoff Edwards his "Right you are!", unique or not.

Pat Sajak: "Talk it out! You never know what might come spilling out . . ."

Chuck Woolery: "You can get this."

Peter Marshall: "Turnabout is fair play."  Bill Cullen: "Thank you ever so much."  Tom Kennedy (to contestant on 50 Grand Slam): "Don't pick your nails." (well I don't think any other host ever said that)

I remember Ludden's "think about it..."

Marshall's "I would've gone to ... but this may work out"

And just because it's new years...

And "I wouldn't touch that one with a fork lift!"

And "Between a rock and a hard place" (when the wheel went to those two wedges with a Bankrupt on one side of them and a Lose-a-Turn on the other side).

And with Cullen--"by golly" and "we're going to give you an opportunity..."

And with Jack Barry--"For those of you watching..." (as opposed to those people who aren't watching).

And Gene Rayburn--"TALLY HO!"

And don't forget Alex Trebek saying "HOLE-iday" while every other host would say "trip."

Very strange...I was thinking of posting a similiar topic, but I wasn't sure what to call it...Host-isms is perfect!!! :)

Ludden:
"we have a commercial"...can't think of any other hosts who phrased it quite this way.

Rayburn:
"the lunatic asylum is open"

"you'll have up to three chances to match as many of the creatures from the dark lagoon..."

"you're a weirdo"

Dawson:
"Survey Says"

"Dr. Woo Woo"...anyone know the origin of this?  Dawson used it many times on both Feud and MG.

Marshall:
"Hello stars!"

Clark:
"for now, Dick Clark...so long."

Anderson:
"be good to your families"

Newton:
"it's all about you."

Yea and he said that because he's Canadian. My family lives in his old backyard--Toronto and Canucks have their own lexicon. For example..."University" = college. Chips = french fries, "Kraft Dinner" = maccaroni (even mac not packaged by the Kraft company), "pop" = soda... and the list goes on.

One time on "CC" their was a prized named "Acopuco Getaway" and Alex stumbled trying to say it, one point calling it it a "Hollo-way".

Alex once closed a ep of CC with: "We can't come back unless we say goodbye and go away and that what were going to do now" (or something to that effect)

And, of course:
"To business, to business, to business"
"Seven-aah !"
"Many Moon Come... A Niner !"
"Stayin' Alive with the Bee-Gees"
"For shame... for shame... for shame"
"It's a Antique Chinese Fishbowl... Very Delle !"
"When we return and return we will, we'll add something to it... FISH !!"
"$700 in cashroooooo"
"... now I put on my weight by drinking too much wine !"
"You're not pregnant ? No... nither am I !"

Here's a few of them that probably may have not been mentioned:

Jack Barry:
"And a most cordial welcome to The Joker's Wild" (and other shows he has hosted)
"On our last show we crowned a new champion" (also used by Jim Perry, mostly on $ale of the Century)
'I caution the audience" (asking the studio not to shout out any answers)

Peter Marshall:
"Object of the game is to get three stars in a row, either across, up and down or diagonally; it is up for the players to determine if a star is giving a correct answer or is making one up.  That's how they get the square."

Geoff Edwards:
"Right you are."

Jim Perry:
"Took a chance, and it's paid off".
"We'll be back right after this commercial time out."

Bob Eubanks:
"Hurry please"

Chuck Woolery:
"Goodnight"
"Quickly"
"Two and Two"

Allen Ludden:
"You got it"

Alex Trebek"
"Select again"

"Nicely solved with little information !"
"Great anticipation !"
"You can stay champ untill you clear/knock-off everything off that Winners Board... plus THIS !!"
"You must win and you with with $XX"
"We've been going down the wire (beautifully)"
"We lock the flashing lights into your buzzer !"
"I thank you, I bless you, goodbye my friends"

Didn't Ludden used to say "Be good to each other?"
I think it was Garry Moore; and it was 'Be very kind to each other.'

Here's some more I thought of.....

Bud Collyer:
Goodbye, and God bless you.

Jim Peck:
1.) Careful, audience.
2.) (Insert contestant's name), stand by for just a moment.

Bert Convy:
1.) OK, gang.
2.) Moving right along.....

Peter Tomarken:
'Tense up' or 'Gird your loins'

Cordially,

 More Perry-isms...

"Oh, you're a good group..." from the intro of the first CS,
"The other side of the [insert card here]" used when one card is a 7 for example and the contestant got the next one correct and it happened to be a 9. So, in this case, he'd say "the other side of the 8."

"My spies tell me that..." when shmoozing with a contestant at the beginning of a show.
"Until you get to the top card, the big bet. There you must bet at least half the money." Not said by Eubanks on any episode of his run of CS

Here's a few more...

Davidson:
(when the celebs got out of control): "Don't encourage them!"
(after a Secret Square win): "Pack your bags!"

Combs:
(after reading the question to a player) "3 seconds!"
(just before an answer reveal) "Let me see..."
(before a Fast Money answer reveal that could put the team over 200) "WHAT did our survey say?"
(after a Fast Money win) "You've got the cash!"

Perry:
(during the PYL-style Fame Game era): "$__ money card where, Summer?"
(during Instant Ca$h) "2 of these boxes have $100 bills, one today is worth (pause, jackpot amount reveal)..."$_,000!"

Enberg:
"Welcome sports fans, from coast-to-coast and around the world, to Sports Challenge."
"We'll be back with (insert teaser for upcoming question) right after this Sports Challenge time-out."

Nick Clooney:  "We'll be right back with action...." "the all-important 1"  Gene Wood: "the fun has just begun"  Tom Kennedy: "your winnings will be transmogrified"  Jim Peck: "take a beat and relax." Dennis James "Okay........Okay" and "Don't miss the show next week cause if you do, were gonna miss you!" and Bill Cullen once said on Blockbusters "Without you, this show would still go on."

Gene Rayburn:
"We'll be right back after this message for America!"

Quote
Allen Ludden:
"You got it"
I can't believe this line hasn't come up yet:  "I hear you at home!"

 [/quote]
Trying to think of things you can tell came from the hosts, not cue cards.  Some of the latter may pop up, only because I associate them so with each host.  And I just plain love the lines besides :-)

More Combs-isms:
"BAM!" (when a contestant hits a high scoring answer in FM)
"X answers up there, is one of them [answer]?"
"## people said it..." (on occasion, when an answer is revealed)
Other answer prefixes: "How about..." and of course "Show me..." (which, before I saw early Dawson episodes and saw that he said it to, I associated with Ray as he used the phrase more often throughout his whole run.  Richard eventually settled for just repeating the answer)

Continuing with the Feud, one Richard Dawson-ism:
"Any of our 100 people say [answer]?"

And how about the Spanish version of the Feud, 100 Mexicanos Dijeron, and Marco Antonio Regil?
"La encuenta dice!"
"Muestrame..." (sp?  Believe it's the Spanish equiv. of "Show me...")
"Aparece..." (again sp?  And again another word to summon an answer)
"Si senor!" (said when someone gets a right answer, usually a Dinero Rapido win)

Now, non-Feud....

Bill Cullen calling a buzzer or assorted object a "hickey"

Peter Tomarken
(When a contestant passing his/her last spin and causing a whammy would give the player not a part of the exchange the win) "You can pass to [Name], if he/she whammies, [inactive player] will be your best friend"
"Hold onto something lucky..." (said to Home Player contestants)

Jim Perry
"Going [a little] against the odds"
(When someone makes a big bet on an average-to-bad card) "[Money amount] on a [card]!"  Example: my favorite, "$2000 on a jaaaaaaaaaack!" And yes I included his vocal inflection.  Finish the image by thinking the line in your most dramatic voice.
"Right up the middle with an 8!"

Jim Lange
"...and that [sinister adjective] ol' lightning!"
"Yes, it's true..." (usually in his Bullseye introduction, agreeing with Jay/Charlie/etc's opening spiel)

Ton Kennedy
"Right now I'd like you to meet....10 of the most [alliterate pair of words to describe the Villains] that ever stood between a [contestant's occupation] and his/her money, and HERE THEY ARE!"  (I also liked how after tallying up the time, he encourages the player to "....BEAT....THOSE....VILLAINS!")
As a variation on Allen Ludden's "Do you have it at home?" on Password Plus Tom sometimes called the audience the "all-knowing audience"

Allen Ludden
"[Player 1]...[Player 2]...friends..." (truncated version of "As they look at it....")
AND WHAT ABOUT...."You got your clues?  You got more than one?"

Ross Shafer
"...double that if you get a lucky spin on ["funny" euphemism for the Star Wheel]"

Another Patrick Wayne-ism (from earlier TTD90 eps, and I can't believe this hasn't been brought up...)
"But there's a but to the but!" (said after warning the player about the dragon)

Jim Caldwell
"The red categories are special categories, I'll be sure to explain them when we get to them!" (more TTD putziness I can't believe hasn't come up yet)

One thing that Chuck W. used to say coming back from commercial that didn't seem quite right was "Welcome back to round 2 of WOF."  Only problem was, round 2 had not yet started when he said it.  Remember this one from Wink on TP: "from the Arts and Litter a Tour category....."

Y'all ARE aware that a lot of your "host-isms" are actually scripted lines the emcee must rattle off more or less verbatim, aren't you? If you took a Barker TPIR episode and compared it to a Dennis James episode from the same era, I'm sure you'd find that their explanations of the games matched almost word for word.

And as an addendum to Chris' post, I believe "hostisms" to be phrases and mannerisms a host just can't shake. Most of Chuck W's are dead on, but what about these Rayburnisms that carried from MG to BtB?

"Put it in the slot..."

"...give it a go..."

Jack Barry had the "cordial welcome" thing...but that's what I saw as a "hostism." A lot of that other stuff came with the game and the game only. "Hurry please" for Bob Eubanks was another good one.

"And now the Wheel of Fortune voice, Mr. Charlie O'Donnel !"
"We time for another round, so lets get to it right away !"
"You pulled that out of left field"
"It is Phrase"
"When I first came out here, it was almost like being asked to kick a Field Goal without any pre-game warm-up with little experience I've had"

I could think of more, but I think that is sastifactory:

[quote name=\'clemon79\' date=\'Jan 2 2004, 01:29 AM\'][quote name=\'JMFabiano\' date=\'Jan 1 2004, 11:07 PM\'] How could I have forgotten Dick Clark's "Two, four-fifty, five hundred dollars!" [/quote]
Or the more common Extended Mix: "Two, four-fifty, five, six, seven hundred and fifty dollars, we'll be back!"

THAT...is a genuine Clark-ism. :)[/quote]
I still think the genuine Clark-ism here is: "Three, five, six . . . six-fifty, no, seven . . . how much is it?" and variations thereof. :)

Also, not common enough to be an -ism, but still in the same vein, on a $25K board with everything but the $50 won: "Three, five, seven-fifty, eight-fifty . . . one thousand? No, it can't be a thousand. Is it? It is? Huh."

Speaking of Kennedy:

"Barump-bump."  (whenever sometime told a bad joke--supposedly on "NTT" and 60s "You Don't Say!", the drummer could provide that if he was paying attention).

And speaking of shows with live music and drummers who did lots of rim shots:

Monty Hall when a contestant was looking out at the audience:  "Honey, unless there's a better show out there, could you look straight at me?"  With variations.

And "Keep those signs away from Uncle Monty..."

Louie Anderson: If it's there, YOU get the points. If not, THEY get the points.

Richard Karn (One-strike triple round): If it's there, you've stolen the points...AND the game. But if it's not up there, there's NOT enough points for them to even steal.

Didn't John Charles Daly also say "Good night, and a good tomorrow" or something similar?

Richard Dawson: "Huckleberry Dillinger."  Bob and Ray: "Hang by your thumbs!" Maybe there should be a thread about malaprops. Here's one from Bill "Sonny" Fox: "Good evening and good welcome...I mean good evening and welcome."

It seems to me (though I could be wrong about this since I haven't seen a Woolery WOF since I was a wee lad) that Chuck often followed a contestant's correct puzzle solution with an enthusiastic "You got it!"

No one seems yet to have mentioned Allen Ludden's "Hi, Doll."

I seem to recall Bob Eubanks saying "Why you little devil!" on many of the shows that he's hosted...

A lot of you are simply stating phrases that a host would naturally repeat over and over as part of the show, or catch phrases ("2 and 2") that a host deliberately used.  If I understood it correctly, the original question was more about the quirky things a host says or does repeatedly without realizing it.

To wit:  Tom Bergeron -- an exemplary wit and ad-libber -- will nevertheless almost always respond to a contestant's bio information by saying, "Good enough."

In the unlikely event that Hell should freeze over and I be called upon to sub in for Bergeron one day, I shall follow all contestant bios with a brash "Unacceptable!" :)

Speaking of which, when is GSN ever going to rerun their original series Paranoia?

Poor Peter. I was dying with anticipation to see how red his face would be after the break.

The guy responsible for hosting the "WOF" pilot, appropriately called "Shopper's Bazaar."

Thank God he did NOT get the job to host the show!

SplitSecond already debunked this for us, relaying that the earliest pilots hosted by Chuckers were called "Bazaar." Edd's pair of pilots were entitled "Wheel of Fortune."

And welcome Matt Ottinger to the Club That Tries to Get the Hostisms Thread Closer to Its Real Meaning :)

Would Chuck Barris' clapping on GONG qualify in that instance?  I may be wrong, but I don't think the occasional claps throughout his intros in the early days of GONG were planned.  It wasn't until about a year-and-a-third into his run on GONG that it became a bit that involved the audience.
