Title: Password question

While watching some episodes of original series, I notice that Allen Ludden places his copy of the "password," into some type of slot.  When looking at some photos of the set, I see some kind of prop atop Allen's podium.   I've imagined it may have served as a magnifier and/or a reading lamp.  Anyone know?
