Arab Big Brother meets Orwellian end
By Julia Wheeler
BBC correspondent in Dubai
Big Brother Bahrain-style has turned out a little more Orwellian than anticipated.
And, controversially, not in the house.
The decision of the Bahrain Government to ban the programme being broadcast from Amwaj Island came after protests against the Arabian version of the popular reality television show.
Demonstrators in the kingdom numbered between 200 and 1,000 people, depending on which side you talk to.

Meanwhile, a pan-Arab dating show was pulled off the air (http://\"http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040301/tv_nm/entertainment_arabs_reality_dc_2\") as too "indecent."
And there's much controversy (http://\"http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040303/ap_en_tv/arab_reality_tv_4\") over an attempt to bring the Endemol "Star Academy" format (basically "Idol" meets "Big Brother") to the Arab countries.
Finally, an episode of the first pan-Arab "Idol" ended in a studio audience riot when the crowd objected to the viewers' choice to be eliminated that week.
I wouldn't want to put on a reality show over there, if I were a producer.

Well, "Fear Factor" might work...although they'd probably think it was a documentary.
"How long will this former dictator stay in the spider hole we've built?"
