Is anyone aware of game show sets that were kept/stored after a show was cancelled on the possibility that the show might go back into production?
After the first run of Battlestars, per NBC's advice the original set was saved and reused for the second run.
Jack Narz Concentration reused many set pieces and the game board from New York.
New sets were built for the second runs of Tattletales and Card Sharks.
-
Not the whole set, but the Ferranti-Packard board from Dawson Feud was put into storage and re-used when the show started back up a few years later.
Did the Concentration board made the move to LA, Chris? In confirming the above info, I found this post from you:
It's a shame they junked the old Concentration board and the prize slips.
When Concentration moved to California they redesigned the controller and I understand they ultimately built a new board based on the same design as the original one, except the trilons turned faster.
-
Supermarket Sweep's contestant island and all of the large signs on the walls made the transition from 1995 to 2000, so those must have been sitting in storage for a while.

"No" on the first one; they only replicated the original set.
Cordially,

How is that any different from what Chris said?

Do we have a source for this? The board ran a LOT faster on the rebooted show; obviously the controller was updated, but I'd be surprised if the same electronics in the gameboard were handling that performance jump.

The story I recall was it was the same board with new guts, if that makes sense. I’m not very tech-savvy so I’m not sure how that would work. I wanna say Randy West told that story on his Facebook.
EDIT: guts not guys. Typing too fast after a nap.

I feel like we had a discussion a while back about the Family Feud board where the original computer from Dawson's era was replaced mid run (it runs a bit faster in the later years most noticeably covering up and revealing the first person's answers). The Ray Combs' pilot seems like it was the same as the later Dawson years, but the series was much faster.
Are we sure the whole (or most) of the Family Feud set wasn't "remodeled" for Dawson's run? If you look at some of the light bulbs where they aren't perfectly even (noticeable around the score readouts), they seem to be exactly the same (both not perfectly even in the same way) - with the only noticeable difference to me is an additional row of lights along the bottom of the trilon, and they are synchronized much better on Combs' version.
-
The Ray Combs Fast Money board was an updated version of the original board. The National Archives of Game Show History now has the Ray Combs board and Corey Cooper came to the museum to get it back up and running. In his Facebook post about it, Corey referred to Dawson's Fast Money board as "the older brother" of the one we have.

I’ve always wondered about this…was the set for Davidson Pyramid rebuilt? The trilons and the flashing $100,000 sign look slightly different.
-
It was indeed a new set. Notice the $100,000 sign was not backlit and did not flash.

I believe the Dawson FF was in storage but CBS couldn't use it for Combs as it had been stored outside and became warped.
-
I've been wondering about the 1993 "Scrabble" and the giant cube; given the (reportedly) hefty cost (https://www.buzzerblog.com/2014/08/14/tbt-the-legend-of-the-scrabble-cube) of its construction, I can only assume they reused the 80s cube and just refreshed it for the newer series.

The faceoff podium was the same one, believe it or not; they just refurbished the crap out of it with new colors and new lights.

Does anyone know if the ABC sets for the Newlywed and Dating Games were kept and used for the syndicated revivals? They looked the same, which is to say, worn and dated.
-
The set for Tattletales II was new construction.
The FF set had warped in places but they used it anyway when it moved to CBS just as Ray Combs was coming in.
-
My understanding is the 70s newlywed set was at least in part the same. Years after it concluded the original backdrop curtain was still visible on a Ktla soundstage when I attended some taping, and one of the studio workers contended it was the original set piece.

True. You usually briefly saw the Newlywed Game "forest" backdrop at the beginning of most episodes on Dick Clark's version of It Takes Two, when they panned the audience.

I thought the old Navy Family Fleece Commercials repurposed the combs and Dawson return set pieces?

Weakest Link set used for the Dirty Rotten Cheater Pilot
I believe Whammy used Card Sharks 01 set pieces.

Definitely not--the faceoff podium can't be the real one (Combs coloring with Dawson light-up, and I can tell you first-hand that the lockout lights from Combs' run have never been replaced in the real one). tthe three-digit bank readout on top gives the gameboard away as being a recreation. The contestant desks are DAMN good if they aren't the real ones, but I strongly suspect that the real desks of that design wound up in the dumpster when the Bullseye format was introduced.

Jack Narz Concentration reused many set pieces and the game board from New York.
It is my understanding that the entire game board and price racks were shipped from New York to Los Angeles. The machinery in each trilon was replaced which is why they rotate faster than in the original series. The original control panel was used but it became unreliable with age which is why the director cuts away from the game board after non-match.
-
IIRC the Feud commercial set was used as a display in the Chicago or NYC Old Navy stores. I was in New York in spring/summer of ‘03 and wanna say I remember seeing the display.

A completely new controller was built per Ev Penn.

A couple to add to the mix here:
Food Network had two 1-season game shows. First "Pressure Cooker." A year later, a show called "Taste Test" used an updated set.

Sports Geniuses on FOX Sports used the same podiums as Vs. on Comedy Central.

Good to know - thanks for the update! I will note that.

You're right on both accounts. The Davidson version looks like it used a bolded version of the $100,000 sign font.
The big tell for me was the Winner's Circle board. For the '82 revival, they kept the same design language of previous versions- the blue space below the bottom row of trilons is still large enough to house a fourth row. This wasn't the case on the Davidson version.

Wow - all these years and I never noticed that. You are correct!
-
Tim, that was exactly when and where that repurposing of the TNG set was pointed out to me. I sat through several tape days of that effort. Forgive me if the years eroded my attention to detail...

Something never looked quite right about the Davidson set. This must have been it.

I noticed at least one star moving their heads trying to read the $100 trilon as it appeared to line up right with the receiver's head.
