Title: "Jeopardy!" 1984 premiere: Delayed?
Post by: trainman on September 18, 2004, 08:44:35 PM
Every reference I can find says the Alex Trebek "Jeopardy!" premiered on September 17, 1984.

But I have a copy of the September 8-14, 1984 TV Guide, Cincinnati edition, that shows "Jeopardy!" airing on Channel 9 in Cincy and Channel 22 in Dayton at 7:30 P.M. that week.  And among the Monday, September 10, listings, there's a Channel 22 ad promoting the premiere of "Jeopardy!" and the fact that it's back-to-back with "Wheel."

So...did TV Guide screw up, did both WCPO and WKEF screw up when submitting their listings and ads, was the "Jeopardy!" premiere pushed back a week after the TV Guide deadline, or are the EoTVGS and Harry Eisenberg's book, among other sources, wrong about the premiere date?  I assume "Jeopardy!" was being distributed via satellite from the beginning, so surely it didn't premiere on different dates in different cities!

I have the Dayton edition and they list those two and WBNS Channel 10 Columbus also started the show on that day (at 10:30am moving PYL to a delayed broadcast at 9:30AM)  Looking at the LA edition, KCBS didn't start J! until the 17th.  The "debut" date as remembered by the authors of the ETOVGs and Mr. Eisenberg may be based on the first airing by KCBS.  Considering that WOF had started "early" in mid-August 83 on my local station (WJRT-Flint), stations may have been able to start as needed.  I don't think day-and-date barter was as prevelent then as it is now.

On WEWS-TV 5 in Cleveland (a Scripps-Howard station), Jeopardy! premiered at 7:30pm on Monday September 10th 1984 and has been there ever since. It knocked The Joker's Wild out of the market in so doing.
About Wheel Of Fortune, that began on August 29, 1983 on TV-5 at 7pm with a week of shows taped at the Ohio State Fair. The first studio show was presented on Labor Day 1983 immediately following Peter Jennings' first official newscast as sole anchor of World News Tonight, a position he inherited upon the death of my hero Frank Reynolds after Ted Koppel turned it down and Max Robinson was kicked over to news briefs and the middle of the night weekend reports.

You know, I have the September 8-14 1984 "Fall Preview" Orlando Edition of TV Guide, and on September 10, it says that Jeopardy! and The $100k Name That Tune will premiere September 10.

Uh, I thought the State Fair shows didn't happen until 1997?

Then I guess you saw them on a delayed basis.

Were those shows aired in any other markets, besides your own?

They aired on the other Ohio stations that were to carry the show, I know, and in the same time period. This served as a "preview week" of sorts. Don't know if they were beamed beyond the Buckeye State.

That's all well and good, but that doesn't answer my question. Do these episodes still exist anywhere?

Who said Henke was answering your question about whether the eppys exist?  He, however, WAS answering your earlier question about whether the eps aired in other markets.

For the record, I can't answer your question either.  But ease up there.  Sometimes additions to a thread aren't related to the last post made.

That reminds me. I asked weeks ago whatever happened to Illinois Instant Riches announcer Bill Barber. What do any of the posts which have come along since then have to do with Bill's whereabouts? I want answers! And I will have them.........................NOW.

"Wheel" started early around here too - the Buffalo station started airing it the second-last week of August.

Sometimes the dates listed in the EOTVGS are wrong - maybe they go by when it started in most of the country.  There are quite a few instances where we got the shows earlier than is listed.  For example, we got the syndicated "Break the Bank" on Sept 10, 1976, where I believe the EOTVGS says it started the 18th.  We also got syndie "Joker's Wild" the week before Labor Day.  "Tic Tac Dough" on Sept 1st 1978, and the early start for the syndie "Wheel", just to name a few.  All are ealier than the book says.

In the days before satellite distribution, I guess stations may have been given a choice of when to start.

How many other syndie games did C-Town pull in mid-run? HS comes to mind...any more?

Wipeout (pulled after 13 weeks, was buried at the lovely time slot of 5 AM) and I believe the syndie Combs Feud are the only two that come to mind immediately...
