So THIS is where all those contestants come from. You know, the ones who aren't college students! ;-)
We all know that Bob Barker and TPiR are incredibly loved from sea to shining sea. Well, Todd Newton, I, and the traveling family of TPiR-Live staffers are getting an incredible reminder of just how widespread and dedicated the fans are. It's so overwhelming that I felt I had to share the experience with our Invision family.
Hundreds of plain, church-going, Walmart-shopping Americans from all over Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas are traveling, some driving many hours, to the Harrah's casino property in Shreveport every day to experience a bit of the beloved American icon that is "The Price Is Right". Since even before our arrival at this venue last week, every single performance of TPiR-Live has been sold out.
The local TV news reporters and anchors are just as giddy as the fans when, during their live remotes, they get called to "Come On Down" or get a chance to spin the big wheel. The contestants know every game; some are so excited that they even cry on-stage. Many in the audience are wearing homebrew TPiR shirts, yelling educated guesses at the prices of the prizes, and everybody howls at the classic clips. Long live Yolanda Bowsley and the Samoans!
This unexpected short-term job opportunity has become a surprisingly fulfilling chapter in my career. As Freemantle has generously cooperated in allowing Todd, the other hosts, and me to fly home for the tape days of our other committments, I'm happy to report that I'm loving what now appears to be an endless run for TPiR-Live. In total, the show has been on the road for just over a year now, and has given away over $1 million. I hope you get a chance to see it.
Regards from the fruited plain!

Walmart-shopping Americans

Things overheard at The Price Is Right Live:
"Shit haddy, I thought Bob Barker was older."
"How come Rod Roddy ain't wearin' one-a them sequined jackets?"
I took my wise-ass pills today, can you tell?

Ya know, I was thinking this the other day. Obviously, you would have rather gotten the gig at Television City, but the contacts you made whilst occupying that chair in the interim seem to have panned out into a nice little side gig for you...and this one is allowing you to see a little of the world at the same time. Not a bad way to live at all. :)

Did you read Claudia Jordan's lawsuit? I don't see how anyone in their right mind would want to work there.
I sincerely hope this turns into a long and fruitful gig for Randy, Andy and everyone else. I'm very happy for each and every one of them.
The wise-ass pills must've worn off.

Randy,
Just don't forget about us Midwesteners in the near future ;-D
If you're doing the show for 1000s of Bible thumpers in the deeeeeep South, then surely you can stop by Mountaineer in West Virginney for a few weeks, by cracky!!!
Actually, Mountaineer would be a great place as it sits near where OH/WV/PA all come together -- an easy drive for those in Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cleveland and Erie.
Unfortunately, the WVa Lottery people don't like to use slots based on any TV shows or movies (including game shows).
Then there are always the Niagra Falls or Detroit area casinos as well!!!

I hope we eventually get this show to every corner of the country, including your neck of the woods. But know that as TPiR-Live is an outgrowth of Freemantle's overall partnership with Harrah's that started with the TPiR slot machine, we'll be playing only Harrah's owned or operated properties. There are enough of them scattered across the country that I bet we'll eventually be a tank or two of gas from most everyone.
Thanks for the kind words of support on this site, and the great fun when Invisioners visit the show.

No new hosts since we last talked about it. Todd remains the primary with Jeff Trachta in close secondary rotation. Jeff will be working later this month here in Shreveport before Todd returns in December. The roster also includes Mark Walberg, Chris Harrison, Marc Summers, Michael Burger and Chuck Woolery (did I forget anybody?). Others have been considered, but not selected.

Live version of the show, IIRC it's usually played in Atlantic City and Shreveport. They play some of the pricing games for scaled back prizes.

(This applies at least to the Atlantic City shows). It's a Live Stage SHow held at various Harrah's casino properties throughout the country. You pay $25 to get a ticket to the show. If you win a qualifying game, that is, pick the lowest and highest priced items of a group of three in the fastest time, you're one of the four people to come on down to bid on an IUFB. The winner of said one-bid plays a pricing game, the props of which look virtually the same as on the show. The games played in Atlantic City were It's in the Bag, Race Game, Cliffhangers, and Hole in One. After each PG is played, four new contestants are picked via the qualifying game. Four PGs are played. And after the second PG, three more players are picked via the qualifying game to spin the Big Wheel for cash. To pick two different players to play the showcase, they do a set of three questions, the people who get those right in the fastest time advance to the SC. Both players bid on the same showcase, and the one who comes closest without going over wins one of the prizes in the showcase; winning the complete showcase is done by being within $100 of the ARP. Each PG is played for slightly smaller prizes than the TV show, the Big Wheel is played for $250 in Cash to the winner of the SCSD($100 for getting $1.00, $500 for getting a green section in the bonus spin, and $1000 for getting $1.00). Randy West is usually the announcer, but Daniel Rosen has done some announcing. Jeff Trachta, Todd Newton, Mark Walberg, Chuck Woolery, and Marc Summers are among the hosts. Randy and Daniel both did announcing when it was in Atlantic City this SUmmer, and Mark, Jeff, and Todd all had a stint at hosting in AC.

Randy says the audiences for TPIR Live get every bit as worked up as they do for the television tapings, despite the absence of Bob Barker. This gives Fremantle and CBS an idea of how audiences would respond to TPIR without him.

In all fairness, this only really gives them an accurate idea of how studio audiences would respond - you'd be worked up too if you had the chance to win A NEW CAR! before you left that room.
The big question is, are these same people that are consistently packing the Harrah's houses people that watch the daytime show on any sort of regular basis? If so, are they only okay with the absence of Barker in front of them because they know he'll be on their TVs tomorrow morning at 11?
All of us are rooting for Price to succeed beyond Barker's tenure, and while this stage show is definitely a fun (and well-executed) extension of the TV property, I don't think it can give any of us (including Fremantle and CBS) an accurate glimpse into the post-Barker future.
-
You'll never know for sure how TV audiences will respond without Barker until you go on the air without him. I've been to TPIR tapings in days past where the audience was absolutely placid (despite Johnny Olson's best efforts), not whipped up into the frenzy of today's audiences, and those audiences had the same opportunity to win new cars. My instinct tells me audiences are just as much in love with the franchise as with Barker. They only call a small number of people out of the hundreds in the room to "come on down" yet the crowd still goes wild. I've never bought into the theory that Barker is an irreplacable superstar around whom the show revolves. I remember when Barker was considered just another emcee and when Dennis James did a less stiff but clumsier job of emceeing the show. To me Barker is just another production element, perhaps overrated, along with Plinko, the NEW CARS, the models, the garish set, the music, etc. The Live show can't give an accurate representation but I think it gives an inkling.

Well, in that case I think the closest Harrah's property is in the Chicagoland area, unless Harrah's is planning to build in PA (Erie & New Castle -- Between Pittsburgh & Youngstown -- are already breaking ground now that casinos are legal there).
Well if you're ever in the Columbus area, Randy, do us Ohioans a favor and stop by the State Capitol and beat some sense into Governor Bob "Everything is under control in Ohio" Taft in the hopes that he'll change his mind on giving us casinos. I heard that 2x4's and small crowbars aren't effective on his brain-dead head -- large lead pipes might do the trick!!!
-
Well, Shreveport is about 200-300 miles away from where I live, but I may make a pass up there to go check it out, though.
-
I think that for many people, it's "The Bob Barker Show" more than "The Price is Right." It's hard to provide specific anecdotal eveidence, but you can tell that for some audience members, the Studio 33 experience is as much about seeing Bob in person as it is about having a chance to win a new car. People will laugh and applaud when he turns down requests for kisses during the breaks (and I don't fault him for doing so). And the number of gifts that he receives from audience members even when the cameras aren't rolling can be amazing.
Okay, one anecdote that supports my position: One day, one of the pages told me that right before it was time for Rich Fields to come out and do his warmup, he was going to lead the audience in a chant of "WE WANT RICH! WE WANT RICH!" both as a way to get everybody excited and also to give Rich some of the attention that Bob gets. He started the chant, but as soon as it got going, 99% of the audience was chanting "WE WANT BOB! WE WANT BOB!" He couldn't get the audience to switch over to "Rich."
Granted, there have been some dead audiences in the earlier days of the show. But Bob has since developed his grandfatherly persona that he didn't have then.
I'm not saying that there's no Price after Bob quits. A lot of people enjoy the familiarity of the set, prizes, and games. But there are also a lot of people who watch strictly for Bob, and familiarity of the game or not, they're not going to accept a new host who isn't Bob. I just hope that the inevitable ratings slide won't be drastic enough to hurt the show.

Have you heard or seen anything to suggest that people would actively tune out if Barker left, or is this simply your impression? I've been in the studio and have seen all the adulation Barker receives. I'm saying that despite the adulation he receives now, judging from audience reaction to the Live show, audiences will still be enthusiastic about the show -- perhaps not AS enthusiastic -- and some of the enthusiasm for Barker could transfer to a new emcee over time.

I think the only way a replacement host will succeed and capture the hearts of America is if Bob does what Ralph Edwards did for him on "TorC." Make an on-camera introduction of the new host and have Bob tell America that this is the young man who will take the reins and whom Bob fully endorses and wishes great success for the future of the show.

I am under the impression that while Barker is a VERY important part of TPIR, if the show can lose 2 announcers and 6 permanent models without missing a beat, thr show will go on without Barker. I feel that most people realize that Barker is not going to host the show forever, and Fremantle should try some sub-hosts now while the iron is still on, if not hot, and not wait until he kicks the bucket or retires. Perhaps maybe the summer months while Barker's on vacation?

LOL...worked out fine in Australia when Tony Barber did it on Rob Elliott's first WoF...although, not to take anything from the latter's fine hosting job during his 6 yrs on the show, viewers were prolly just so glad to see the old rules back in place they wouldn't have cared if Rolf B. had been flown in to host. :-)

I admit, this is my impression -- I haven't had a chance to ask audience members whether they'd accept a new host, or to see their reaction if I announced that Bob wouldn't be there that day. Still, just watching the show, you'll see a number of contestants who don't care that they have a chance to win _____ -- they're just ecstatic that they've gotten to "meet" Bob Barker.
I haven't been to a Harrah's show, so I don't know what the mood of the crowd is there. I did have a thought -- how many people in the audience aren't aware of exactly what that show is? I remember taking a couple of calls about the show when it first started in Atlantic City, and when the callers learned that Bob wouldn't be there/it wouldn't be televised, they were audibly disappointed. I doubt that too many people are going to the live show expecting something that it isn't, but it does make me wonder.
A lot of people randomly blurt "I love you, Bob!" during the breaks (seemingly for no reason -- what would they expect to receive for yelling it?). No one ever yells "I want to win a car!" or "I want to play Plinko!" during the breaks.
I don't doubt that there will still be an audience for the game of The Price is Right even after Bob leaves. And all I have to do is look at Trebek Jeopardy! to know that the right replacement host will keep the show alive. My concern is that there will be a drop in ratings when it happens (how much of a drop, no one knows -- I'm expressing my concern that it could be a fairly big one) and that the show will be yanked before the audience realizes that someone who isn't Bob can be a good host, too.

A dose of Ritalin?

Because the Plinko! board or a new car can't respond, though that never stopped people on the street from conversing with lamp posts.

You wouldn't be able to tell them that. The taping for that day would be cancelled ahead of time unless it was a last minute thing.

When I went to the show this past July, someone had asked the tickettaker if Bob was going to be there. I think he was acting comedically when he responded "No Bob Barker!"
I remember taking a couple of calls about the show when it first started in Atlantic City, and when the callers learned that Bob wouldn't be there/it wouldn't be televised, they were audibly disappointed.
Apparently enough people thought Bob would be a part of this that Ticketmaster put a disclaimer on their website saying Bob is not hosting these shows.

Totally different animal, just like Wheel. All he does is read questions. Anybody can do that. Wheel and J! are shows that have game play strong enough that a host change won't collapse the show (see Richard Karn). Price requires more host interaction.

WHOA! My original intention was to provide an update on the live show which has been discussed here before and visited by some of our members. I didn't imagine it would become a discussion about the future for our species on Earth after the centuries of Bob Barker's reign. In terms of talent and molding TPiR in his image, nobody will ever replace him. Just the same, I'd expect that if I outlive Bob, I will see somebody else come through those big doors. And it will be a sad day.

Say what? Who is taking calls? Do we have a Harrahs or Ticketmaster employee amongst us? The only point I was making is that there is a tremendous fan base for TPiR, as demonstrated by the fact that the live show sells out all the seats we can cram into the various showrooms. By the time I set foot on that stage, nobody sitting in that audience has any expectation of seeing Barker, and nobody seems the least bit disappointed.

I'm sure when they first hear the words TPiR some people wonder if Barker will be appearing. But that thought must disappear quickly, probably before they even visit the box office, as Todd Newton's or Mark Walberg's face is plastered on most of the in-house advertising, and the TV spots offer little opportunity for confusion.
Again, the only point: TPiR's draw is phenomenal - sold out houses, lots of home-made T-shirts on audience members, and wet-your-pants excitment from many of the contestants... and only some of that is due to the local lovely Barkers' Beauties ;-)

Now , I know what you're going to say : "Well, Rich is in his 3rd year of doing this, he must be doing something right" and that may be so, but I don't believe for one second that he's the best for the job....and wish the standards for hosting were a little higher.....If they were, Richard might have joined Joe and Dolly as hosts who were a good idea on paper, and nothing more....
-
Now wait a minute Randy, I don't believe I wet my pants when I hit the putt for Las Vegas. Now, I almost assualted Mark L. with the putter, but that's another story all together. ;)
Depends!!
And congrats again. I forgot... what line did you putt from, and was it "Hole in One" or "Hole in Two"?

Chris, would Karn be good enough to host a Feud office run-thru back in the heyday of G-T?
If by chance he got to emcee an office run-thru, I can assure you it would be his last. I won't go into a litany of his shortcomings here and now, but he needs to stop SHOUTING.
Richard Dawson projected warmth on camera and was naturally witty. Ray Combs was goofy. Louie Anderson didn't bother me as much as Karn. For as much of Karn FF as I can stand to watch, I've never seen him bring anything which could remotely be described as "wit" to the proceedings.
-
At times, (especially the themed shows) Richard seems to be getting a little more personable- cracking jokes, smiling, and when he relaxes, he actually does a decent job.
Not saying I hate Richard...but I think that he could do better!
-
Not to take anything away from Randy's ability to get an audience pumped, but another major difference between studio Price and Harrah's Price is that an appreciable number of people seem to come into the Harrah's show after having had one or two adult beverages... and a small handful I've seen come in three or four sheets to the wind.

IIRC the August 16th Live show with Trachta and Rosen at Harrah's didn't have the bar in back of the audience, but the September 20th show John and I saw did.

Maybe that's why so many beautiful women approach me at the casinos. But probably not, as most of them have "One Right Price" in mind for playing "Bump". I always underbid ;-)
Yes, beer and/or wine is available in some showrooms, including Atlantic City and Reno. No booze was sold in the San Diego showroom. And in Shreveport they make fun of people who drink wine; it's beer only, Bubba!
Again, TPiR is a huge draw, especially for the majority of fans in the world who will never see the show at TV City. I don't attribute the ticket sales or the audiences' excitement to the booze; but it does do wonders for us backstage!
For those inquiring minds, Todd Newton and Jeff Trachta are alternating the host duties. I'm announcing all the dates in Shreveport, with the exception of quick roundtrips home for TV tapings. Scott Reside fills in for me on those days. Mention Invision for a backstage tour ;-)

To those who e-mailed about plans to visit beautiful downtown Shreveport to hear Splendido, Dig We Must and TPiR's other "greatest hits" loud and in the clear, as well as take a backstage spin of the big wheel during the holiday season, here's a scheduling update. TPiR-Live will be dark for several days just before Christmas.
Jeff Trachta is wrapping his run this Sunday. Todd Newton then returns for two weeks that will take us through Sunday 12/19. The show will be dark through the 24th and will resume with 2 shows daily starting on Christmas Day. With the exception of a few brief weekend flings to L.A. for other committments, I look forward to welcoming more visitors from our Invision family. Just e-mail first.
If time permits, I can also tour you through what must be the pride of Louisiana, the largest Target store I've ever seen; it even has a supermarket section!

Not that big a deal--Super Targets are all over the place (Target Greatlands don't have supermarket departments). They even have a TV spot with a plane filled with almost every great food product icon you can think of (Tony the Tiger, Snap, Crackle and Pop, Mr. Peanut, the talking M&Ms, the Jolly Green Giant, etc., etc.) all coming to a Super Target.
Yeah, I'm wondering how the Jolly Green Giant could fit in an airplane.

How long is the TPiR Live show in Shreveport? I don't see an end date listed anywhere. There's a strong possibility I could be near Shreveport in January for a wedding, so hey...why not see the show again? ;)
Also, is the show planning on coming back east (Atlantic City) again in the future?
Thanks!

Dave (and anyone else for that matter),
TPiR-Live will be at Harrah's Louisiana Downs Casino and Racetrack at least through January 30th. Often our runs are extended, but I have no word yet if that will be the case in Shreveport. Bring the newlyweds to the show!
We ARE expecting to return to Atlantic City in the spring for at least a couple of months. This time at the Harrah's Hotel and Casino, as opposed to the Harrah's owned Showboat Hotel and Casino on the other end of the strip where we played recently.
Harrah's recently purchased the Caesar's properties, so there are dozens and dozens of possible venues. With the construction of a second set in early 2004 we've already played in two locations simultaneously. TPiR-Live is rumored to be headed West from Louisiana for the next stop. I'll post updates when the bookings are announced.

Bringing this one back to the top...
First, a huge thanks to Randy for being a gracious host to my family during our Christmas visit to the Shreveport show. I was able to purchase tickets for the second show the day after Christmas at Harrah's for 10 other family members, and just wanted to report quickly to the Invision family how things went. This was my second show to see Mark host; I thought he did well in Atlantic City and he's perfected things since that last time I've seen him.
Another big "Thank you" to Cathy Dawson for taking care of seating arrangements at the show for the fam. For those who don't know, Cathy is doing a fantastic job of producing the show currently and is a wonderful person and so kind to me every time I visit.
The show began after Randy's always peppy warmup, and our first "Item Up for Bids" round was presented and we ended up having my cousin as the second 'fastest finger' (is that the right show?) in the audience called down to Contestant's Row. She was $1-upped by the last bidder and did not make the stage. That contestant won Race Game in 3 tries.
Hole in One was fairly difficult with numerous medicine products used, and unfortunately the contestant didn't make it past line 1. She failed to sink the putt...even in two.
The Big Wheel made a showing with a "$5,000" winner on his bonus spin. The contestant took home an impressive $850; $250 for winning the Showdown, $100 for $1.00, and $500 for landing on a nickel in the Bonus Spin.
Cliff Hangers was, well...Cliff Hangers. Unfortunately, as we all know, $50 is probably not a good guess for the first prize. Take a guess at the outcome.
It's in the Bag was the hardest game of the night by far. The contestant wisely took $300 and quit.
The showcase was themed around "Rolls." The prizes were an appliance, a video camera, a Trip to Nevada, Big Screen TV, and a Honda Civic. The best bid of the night went to the gentleman in the "Runner Up" podium bidding $21,318 on the Showcase. He was over by $169. Just SO CLOSE to winning the whole package!
More props to fellow Invisioner and good friend Mandel for some of the behind the scenes aspects of this Show. Mandel's hard work and "Price knowledge" is quite apparant when you visit!
That's the brief report from Shreveport...if you're in town and feel like losing a couple bucks, stop by the Racetrack! I very much recommend checking out these Live Shows. My entire family, some lacking general television knowledge, were quite impressed as well! :)
Thanks again to all involved in the Price Roadshow for treating me like family on my visits. Well done as always!

Come on down! Show lures Price fans to Bossier City
07:05 PM CST on Friday, December 31, 2004
By DARLA ATLAS / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
BOSSIER CITY, La. -- Anyone who's ever seen a game-show audience on TV will agree: Those people are crazy. This is especially true of the granddaddy game show of them all, The Price Is Right. Whenever contestants are ordered to "Come on down!" they hop out of their seat, step all over other people, wave their arms with abandon and run to the stage as fast as their legs can carry them. Why? Because that's how it works in the game-show world. In this universe, things are done with much enthusiasm.
From now until Jan. 30, those possessing game-show pep can come on down to Bossier City to experience The Price Is Right Live. The show's production company, Freemantle Media Television, has partnered with Harrah's casinos to bring a traveling version of the hit show to several cities. Right now, it's at Harrah's Louisiana Downs.
No, you won't meet the Price king himself, Bob Barker; he's busy with his legendary day job in California. Instead, the host is Todd Newton, who has hosted Whammy! The All New Press Your Luck and several shows on the E! network among his gigs. (He's also a regular on the red-carpet scene; look for him at the Oscars this year.) His announcing cohort is Randy West, whose voice is known to fans of Supermarket Sweep.
We reserved our seats online -- recommended, as the show sells out regularly -- and made the four-hour drive from Fort Worth. Price Is Right Live is played in a room set off from the casino, near the racetrack. After lunch in the casino's buffet restaurant, we stood in line to register and were given yellow price tags with our names on them, just like the real show. We affixed them to our chests with pride. The room, which seats about 400 people, features multicolored curtains and lights so blinding that you'd think it was being taped for TV.
Finally, it was showtime. Mr. West came out first, working the crowd by telling jokes and asking us such things as "Who's feeling lucky?" He noted that the show is an institution, having been on the air for 33 years. We cheered wildly.
Then Mr. Newton appeared, looking every bit the game-show host: perfect teeth, perfect hair, perfect delivery of jokes and banter. At last, it was time for the first fastest-finger round, which would determine the first four players to come on down. We had to punch in the numbers for three items in the order of cost, from least expensive to most. Mr. West then called out four people to "come on down!
The fortunate four made their way to the front, most adhering to the earlier advice to do so with gusto. (A few of them just walked, though. Rebels!) The item up for bid was a fax machine. The contestants placed their bids, one guy using the old "One dollar!" strategy. He didn't win; a woman named Felicia came closest to the actual retail price -- say it with me -- without going over.
As she ran up to the stage, the curtains opened to reveal the set. It looked just like the TV show, we were pleased to note. And all the old favorites are there, including the cute Cliffhanger guy who yodels.)
Felicia would be playing the Race Game, which involved figuring out the prices of items such a cheap-looking armoire, a bicycle, a vacuum and a telescope. With the timer running, she had to grab price tags, put them next to each item and press the buzzer to see how many she had correct. As she ran around, my husband and I were appalled by her choices. No way that pressboard armoire costs that much!
She pressed the buzzer. Got them all right on the first try. We all hooted and hollered so loudly you'd think this woman was our own flesh and blood. Felicia's competitors on Contestant's Row were then told to sit back down. Unlike the real show, they don't get a second chance. They dejectedly accepted a parting gift and found their seats. Still, that makes room for four new people to get a chance to come on down!
For the next 45 minutes or so, more games we all know and love were played, with some contestants winning (a refrigerator, $100 in cash) and some losing (accompanied by the requisite "Bomp, bomp, bomp, boooomp" music. Saddest tune ever.). Occasionally, Mr. Newton would direct us to the TV screens to watch a few bloopers from the real show. They were laugh-out-loud funny, reminding us why the show has been on for so long and why Mr. Barker reigns supreme.
But back to the game. We all then tried to win a turn to spin the money wheel. My name continued not to be called. Instead, some guy from Texas came closest to $1 on the wheel, winning $250. But he didn't get to move on to the Showcase as he would on TV; those spots were reserved for two more new people in the crowd.
Their names were then called (Darn it! Is there something wrong with my keypad?), and they took their spots behind the familiar Showcase podiums. The two Newton's Beauties models showed us a pasta machine, washer/dryer, cordless phones, a trip to Lake Tahoe and a 2005 Honda Civic EX. Lots of loot! Both women placed their bids. Both went over. We reacted with a sympathetic "Awwww."
As the show ended and we applauded for applause's sake, Mr. Newton urged everyone to "help control the pet population; have your pet spayed or neutered," just as Bob would. Most people walked out of the room with smiles on their faces, which isn't always the case in a gambling facility. No, we didn't win fabulous cash or prizes, but we laughed a lot. Plus, we managed to spend more than an hour in a casino at a cost of just 25 bucks apiece. That price seemed quite right.
