Does anybody here have any information on Wheel's pilot and premiere? For example, what were the first puzzles, what did the dollar values look like, who were the contestants, what did they win, what were the prizes available, and what were the prices of the prizes... How did Chuck and Susan do the first time around?
-
Well, the January '75 premiere of "Wheel" hasn't been seen yet (doesn't mean it doesn't exist somewhere). What I can provide info on is the pilots, both the "Shopper's Bazaar" pilots with Chuck Woolery and the Edd Byrnes hosted "Wheel of Fortune" ones. As you'll find with my links, "Bazaar" was about '73 and "Wheel" was piloted in 1974.
The discussion on "Bazaar" was part of this thread (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=322&st=7\") discussing a promo which used clips of it.
And "Wheel" is covered in detail at Mike Burger's Game Show Pilot Light (http://\"http://www.mikeburger.com/pilots/\").

I do not know how, but now there are pictues the show from 1976 at GS Central.

Thanks for those links!
Yeah, I've been keeping up with Gscentral and their timeline. It should be really neat when he gets the whole thing done. I do wonder as well where he got those 1976 pictures of Wheel with that horrible yellow curtain! Yuck!

How about those two shades of blue right next to each other on the round 1 wheel? Of course, this was the 1970s. The tackier, the better.

Minute details, but to a huge WoF fan, maybe you can get some value out of it:
- The opening spiel originally ended "Prizes totalling $_____...and are yours to buy today on WoF!"
- The premiere and other early eps featured some luxury-type prizes, such as an airplane
- The first 2 eps or so had the short-lived "Buy a Vowel" space before it was wisely scrapped
Chuck Donegan (The Illustrious "Chuckie Baby")

Zach, did TPiR mention a 45th anniversary in 2001? Did Jeopardy mention it's 40th anniversary this year? (don't answer either, I'm sure you get my point)
So why should Wheel mention their 30th anniversary in 2005 when the current version has only been on since 1983?

I think there's a difference here. In the case of Price and Jeopardy, they were brand new versions of defunct shows, with substantial differences (especially in TPIR's case) from their predecessors. In Wheel's case, the current version began as a companion to the daytime version, and they co-existed for several years. It feels more like a single continuum.

Pat and Vanna actually did make a brief mention in 2000(don't recall if it was on January 6th or not) of the show's 25th anniversary of its original premiere.
-
I know this subject about Wheel's past is indeed a strange one. I mean the anniversary part where they only take consideration of the 1983-present stuff. But i mean, even when Pat talks about years past he does sometime make note that Chuck was there first, and Charlie has been there since 1975 and stuff like, that would confuse the infrequent viewer. However there would be less questions asked if they took account the start of wof in 1975 rather than the relaunch in 1983. Even in the opening for the 3000th and the 4000th episode, they use an opening from a show that from a avid viewer is definately not 1983, since there is no turntable (which they added in 81 or 82), and they use a section of the 'old' network theme, that was never used in syndication, probably because it had Charlie's voice over it rather than Jack's.
Just me rambling

Is it just me, or does it seem that the Wheel people just try to forget the period while it was on NBC? Maybe because a lot of the tapes are "missing"... I hope they acknowledge WOF's 30th anniversary in 05, hopefully near its premiere date... January 6!

I never really liked that Buy a Vowel space... It always seemed stupid to me. I always thought that if you wanted a vowel, you gotta pay for it!
Wouldn't it be cool if WOF, or any other current game show, would offer a plane, or a lamborghini, or maybe a new house as a prize! I'm sorry, the $50,000 log cabins in Maine that WOF offered in the late 80's didn't cut it for me!

NO, No, you misunderstood me.

Then why would it be called "BUY A VOWEL"? Listen to what you are saying.
The way it worked, from what I've understood, is when you landed on that space, you were forced to buy a vowel. If you didn't have enough money to buy one, you lost your turn.
-
Shopper's Bazaar did have Buy a Vowel spaces, as well as a FREE VOWEL SPACE (where one may call a vowel and not have to pay for it - personally, I think that should have stayed on instead of Buy a Vowel). On the other hand, I don't seem to remember there being a Bankrupt space (though there was the aforementioned $0 space, which had a different function altogether).
This was what I was referring to. It is in this forum
http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=322&st=14 (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=322&st=14\").
My point was that this space was pointless, and horrible, and just a bad idea, and that I AM MOST THANKFUL that it did not make it to WOF's premiere. It was called the Free Vowel space, I think I should have made that more clear.

Number two, You're fanatical attitude towards all things Wheel and all things Pat is good in small doses, grating in large ones...and you're bordering on super-sizing....

And, there are LOTS of people who USED to be on this board who were just as fanatical about other shows. They're not here any more for a reason. Get my drift?

I'm not angry or excited, I'm just trying to understand what is going on with all this.
I don't think I post that often on this forum, apparently I'm the only one who thinks this.
Trust me, I read all the posts, and I respond with my opinions, when it's something I have an opinion about. If you notice, there are topics which I haven't posted anything at all, because I don't know much about it (the Whew! topics for example).
If it will make the forum community happy, I will post less often. I am a very opinionated person though... so it will be hard.
Yes, I am trying to learn from people on this forum, when they aren't trying to demean my opinions or thoughts, though it is hard to distinguish the 2 sometimes on this forum...
However, while we are in the middle of a WOF topic, does anybody have any information on Wheel's hour long stint in the 70's?

So far, you've penned 58 posts. Divide that by the 9 days since your first post and the end result is approximately 6 1/2 posts per day. And that's not often? According to his profile, Zach posts 6.7 times a day. (This isn't a back-handed slam against Zach. I want Mr. Loon to see how his frequency of posting compares with one of the more prolific posters.)

That said, some of the criticism offered to him, both publicly and privately, has been anything but brutal. Part of the reason Usenet went down the toilet is that most of the new users (thank you, AOL) didn't respect the time-honored tradition of lurking -- taking the time to read posts, and to get a sense of a forum and its members and customs -- instead of jumping in and posting right away. Lurking before posting, and learning from one's mistakes, was good practice then and it's still good practice today.
The fact that some have delivered this advice in a blunt manner doesn't make the advice any less relevant or useful.

Of course, it's not like Woolery didn't refer to it on SCRABBLE. I've mentioned before the April Fool's joke he pulled in 1989 by reciting his WoF opening spiel instead of SCRABBLE's (complete with the WHEEL "first look at puzzle" SFX).
But one time, Woolery read this clue: "Vanna White will let you buy them for a price." Once the answer "vowels" was revealed, Woolery looked off-stage (assuming he was talking to producer Gary Johnson) and asked, "Is it still $250 for a vowel? At least it was when I did 'Wheel.'"
And welcome back, Robert.

His answer: Hmm, Bob Barker?
When I told him it was Chuck, he jokingly said "Well, he did host Scrabble and Lingo, so yeah, he'd be natural for it!" Of course, about a month later, he watched "Naturally Stoned" and saw the pictures. His reaction: A broom closet compared to today's set.

And welcome back, Robert.

Thank you. I somehow managed to miss all of the Wheel references on Scrabble.
(Man, why can't somebody air Scrabble again?)

Not to mention CHuck made two famous references to it on Greed: once when someone thought Singled Out was a show hosted by Chuck rather than WOF, and once on a question asking what game show was based on Hangman, or something to that effect.

There was actually a third famous reference, when he actually had a question on WOF, and a person basically made a reference to Pat Sajak on WOF, and Chuck wanted to use his Freebie: one which would eliminate one _contestant_... :)

Nicest thing anyone ever said about a broom closet.
