Title: Game shows in prime access slots...
Post by: aaron sica on April 08, 2005, 10:17:56 AM
As I was looking over my latest "retro" posting, I got to thinking..

Up until September 1980, WGAL-8 filled its 7pm-8pm slot with game shows. 7pm from 1978-1980 was Tic Tac Dough, and 7:30 was a checkerboard, with shows like Hollywood Squares, $25,000 Pyramid, etc.

Starting in September 1980, 7pm went to a local newscast and 7:30 went to "PM Magazine". The 7pm slot was replaced by "NBC News" in 1988, and then by "Entertainment Tonight" a few years later.  After "PM Magazine", WGAL put other news/entertainment news shows on.

Are there any network stations where you live, that haven't aired any game shows in the 7pm-8pm time slot for a long time?

Channel 3 KYW in Philly(NBC pre 9/95, now CBS) hadn't aired a game show between 7-8PM EST from January 1986-September 1998. The Kennedy TPIR was the last game show aired in that hour as NBC, and H2 at 7:30 was the first and only one aired as CBS.

Channel 10 in Philly hasn't aired a game show in the 7-8PM hour since 1993, when Cosby YBYL and Combs syndie Feud aired in that hour, back when 10 was still CBS.

Other than Wheel and J!, Norfolk hasn't had a 7-8 block of games since 1999, when WVBT aired the Dating and Newlywed games. Off the top of my head, WTKR (CBS affiliate) used to do a 7-8 block dating back to at least the mid-70s (I think it was Cross-Wits or TTT at 7, then a checkerboard at 7:30). The most recent example was in the early-90s when they had Combs Feud and Cosby YBYL. Since then, nothing.

In Chicago, WMAQ hasn't run a game show in access since they dropped "Feud" in 1990 or so.  I don't remember what replaced "Feud" immediately outside of "Inside Edition"--very briefly (since the "Prime Time Starts at 6:30" sitcom checkerboard bridged "Name That Tune" and the return of "Feud"), but "Married:  With Children" reruns ran in the time slot (Fox wasn't considered by the FCC a network back then and no off-net in top 50 markets rule hadn't been repealed yet), followed by one year of "Extra" and "Access" ever since then.

I'd mention who used to host "Access," but I won't.

Another NBC affiliate, WNBC, hasn't had any game shows since (I believe) 1991-92, when Ruckus went good-bye.

WCBS had the entire run of H2 on in the hour, but other than that aired nothing outside of Win, Lose or Draw since 1991 (when CBS2 went to Hard Copy/Real TV/The Insider and ET.)

Would that have been "Marblehead Manor", "She's the Sheriff", "Out of this World", etc. in the fall of '87? I believe WCAU-10 Philly (even though it was CBS at the time) also did that..

ObGameShows: Donna Pescow starred on "Out of this World" and was the "sister" of Debralee Scott on "Angie".

I'm pretty sure that WIVB Buffalo hasn't aired a syndie game in access since "$100,000 Pyramid" in the late '80s.  WGRZ aired "The Challengers" in 1990 and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" at 7 its first two years - they moved to noon this season.

WKBW has had "Wheel" at 7 and "Jep" at 7:30 since about 1985.

That would be it.  All 5 shows were sold initially to the NBC O&Os, who came up with the concept.  The "Prime Time Starts at 7:30/6:30" slogan was the NBC O&Os' slogan, so WCAU couldn't use it (but weren't they on the verge of being sold to NBC back then?).

"You Can't Take It With You" and the revival of "We Got it Made" were the other two shows.  In Detroit, the indie Channel 20 ran four of the five (Channel 2 picked up WGIM) in the 7-8 hour along with Larry Anderson's "TorC."  Needless to say, come January there were some changes made.

It would actually be 7 years until that plan was put in motion, in 1994. That's when all hell broke loose with affiliation changes - Fox luring stations like WAGA-5 in Atlanta from CBS, etc.

The one that wound up bringing WCAU-10 to NBC was (and please, correct me if I'm wrong, folks) when Westinghouse bought CBS - Westinghouse stations that were another network (like KYW-3, then NBC, in Philly, and WJZ-13, then ABC, in Baltimore) affiliated with CBS. Having lost its CBS affiliation to KYW-3, WCAU-10 was bought by NBC and became an O&O. That took place 9/10/95.

In Pittsburgh, WTAE/4 [ABC] hasn't aired a game show since 1989, when they dropped, IIRC, ''Win, Lose, or Draw'', and yanked "Entertainment Tonight" away from WPXI/11[NBC]. WTAE has been running ET ever since.

Which obviously means that MG90 was not shown on 4. :) Did any other Pittsburgh station pick up MG90?

WTAE 4 (ABC) in Pittsburgh aired the first season of Family Feud at 12:30 until WPXI (NBC) got it and has aired it at 12:30 and the 2nd run at various other times.

WNBC hasn't aired a GS in the 7-8 PM slot since 1992...during the 91-92 season, the hr. was filled by Love Connection and Ruckus, but when the latter tanked in mid-season, it was replaced by the Geraldo Rivera series Now it Can Be Told, and reruns of Cops took over the 7 PM slot the following season.

AFAIK, KCCI-CBS, Des Moines hasn't aired a syndicated gameshow at all since Trump Card in 1991.
We never did get Match Game; WHO ran "Truth", "Feud", "Squares" in a 90 minute block, though I think it was the afternoon.

Nope, no Pittsburgh station aired Bargain Hunters or MG90. WTAE did air Regis Millionaire and Super Millionaire, don't forget. WTAE aired the Challengers in 1990-91 at Noon for part of its run, also.

Westinghouse had to divest WCAU when they bought CBS.  CBS wasn't allowed to own two VHF stations in Philly, KYW and WCAU, so they worked out a very complicated trade (let me see if I recall this right..)  These are the ownership changes..

KCNC Denver went from NBC -> CBS
WCAU Philly went from CBS/Westinghouse  -> NBC
Miami's Channel 6 went from CBS to NBC
Miami's Channel 4 went from NBC to CBS (they traded physical plant, the call letters of 4 were WTVJ, which went to Channel 6 (then WCIX).  4 became WFOR, 6 took the WTVJ calls)
SLC's channel 13 went from NBC ownership to CBS ownership (NBC went to KSL-5, owned by the Bonneville/Mormon Church)

Essentially NBC traded its Denver, Salt Lake, and Miami signals to CBS in exchange for WCAU and Channel 6 in Miami.  (6 was damaged by Hurricane Andrew and was a very crippled signal, which CBS wanted to upgrade)

Prior to CBS/Westinghouse, KDKA in Pittsburgh and KPIX in San Fran were the only CBS stations that Westinghouse had.

Denver was triggered by KMGH bolting from CBS to ABC.  Gannett owned KUSA the then ABC affiliate, which went to NBC (Gannett is a very big owner of NBC affiliates) after KCNC was traded to CBS.

You're getting your stories crossed here....yes, Andrew crippled 6, but that had nothing to do with CBS fixing....6 was the only station with its antenna way down south in Homestead (which Andrew hit spot on)....it couldn't get it's signal out of Dade County...by trading with 4, they got a better located tower that got them better coverage.... NBC went and built a new tower (in Miramar?) when they got 6...

there you go!

Actually, you meant KUTV ch.2, that switched from NBC to CBS -- ch.13 (KSTU) is SLC's Fox O&O.
