I hate to be the bearer of this news, hopefully not *too* bad, but I felt it was in your best interests:

Eww... just thinking about that one makes me twitch.

This news is definitely in our best interests. I just hope it doesn't lead to another huge thread of "Who should replace Bob when he retires?" because we've been down that road... oh... 165 times before.

So no one get any ideas from this...

Or just Kennedy?  You know, the Kennedy from Friend or Foe?  Nah, Kennedy's Cuties would be shirtless men.

Won't be Bergeron, because America's Funniest Home Videos has just been renewed.  Nah, the CBS prop department will just build a Barkerbot.

From the story:

"He's in his 32nd year as the popular show's host, three years removed from breaking Johnny Carson's record for continuous performances on the same network show."

That's poor writing, because it makes it sound like Bob's got three years to GO before he breaks Carson's record, not that Bob broke Carson's record about three years ago.

Your right.

Since I have never had the pleasure of 'replace Bob' post on this board I would say:

1 - Tom Bergeron   2 - Donny Osmon  3- Todd Newton  4 - A Conan O'Brien style unknown

Replies to this specific post of mine are not necessary.

Not necessary, but you're going to get one anyhow.

Todd Newton would be an excellent choice to replace Bob.  Having seen him interact with people in real time in non-TV settings (2000 Hollywood Showdown tryout in Pittsburgh, 2003 Get Schooled in Pittsburgh), I can tell you he's quick on his feet and he's very entertaining.  Newton might've appeared as overcharismatic on Whammy!, but that's not a bad thing.  If you were looking for someone to replace Barker, would you rather have Todd Newton or a host dryer than the Sahara in the middle of summer?

I can't see Bergeron or Osmond hosting TPiR.  From what I've seen, Bergeron's hosting style works best with a show like Squares, where he was secondary to the stars and their zingers.  Bergeron would be second to the contestants on TPiR, but I can't see a Bergeron-type hosting TPiR.  Osmond...no.  Please no.  He was OK with Pyramid, but that doesn't mean he'd do well with TPiR.

A Conan O'Brien style unknown?  I'll borrow a line from Kevin, Chris, et al--"Wow."

I was thinking more along the lines of how Merv Griffin went against conventional wisdom with Pat Sajak, and how Tom Bergeron (?) was choosen over higher profile John Tesh. The Conan comparison may have been a little off though.

I mentioned Donny Osmond because, yes, I liked him with contestants on 'Pyramid'. He would also be a 'name' if that becomes a factor.

What about the female in Quebec who forgot the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner and fell on the ice before a hockey game this past week?  (Link for more info (http://\"http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/3569004\"))  She's like a female hybrid of Jim Caldwell and Jim Peck.

It was Jay Leno's birthday the other night, and they had her on the show to sing to him. After her lovely rendition, they ran a pretaped bit where they showed her "falling down the stairs" on the way out. (She popped up afterwards and assured the viewers that she was okay.) :)

From what I read on the "Perfesser's site", Tom Kenendy is 78(providing he can do math any better than the arcticle writer). I don't TK would want it this late in his life, even though he did a helluva good job with the nightime gig in 1985-86. Marc Summers might work, he has been on a few game shows like Double Dare, Wintuition, and Unwrapped to name a few.

This week I've found myself speaking when I shouldn't. I hope this isn't another case.

Quote

Firstly, from my observations in social settings and on the sets, some of our game show host icons are/were very satisfied with their lives as their active careers tapered off and they found themselves retired from the daily on-camera life. They have taken to retirement with joy and satisfaction over their past accomplishments. Some in that group choose to keep a share of time in the spotlight by doing work for charities. Others say they are, and seem to be, fully at peace with complete retirement.

I'm certain that Tom Kennedy is in that group.

There are others who have suffered great frustration from having been forced out of the limelight. Some have taken that bitterness to their graves. No further comment necessary. The point being that Tom is not among that group.

Quote

Bob has had similar minor surgery on other occasions. Caught early, skin cancers do not pose a serious health threat. It's one of the few things my mother has in common with Bob!

I suspect the timing of Bob's medical procedure has to do more with not wanting to attend this specific year's Emmy awards ceremony in New York. Attending to his health needs at that time is in keeping with the class, graciousness and elegance he is known for in the public eye. That sense of proper deportment in public is one of his most charming attributes.

A Google search is what gave me the definition of the word, which does not agree with him.

Yes, "removed" is used far more often to indicate that the time period referenced is in the past. But not always--and with the phrasing in the story, it's confusing. The verb tense doesn't clarify the meaning, and when you're also talking about how much longer Barker will be working on TPIR, it's more interesting and/or much easier to think he's three years away from a record than to think he's three years past one.

There's a difference between "accurate" and "unambiguous".  While the language the author used may have been correct, he chose to use a phrase that is easily misunderstood by an awful lot of people, even smart ones.  If the goal of mainstream writing is to be understood, he probably could have found a better way to express the same idea.

And now, to swerve this fat baby back on topic, this is just precautionary surgery, yes? Bob is wisely following his physician's advice to prevent what COULD be a major problem if this bad boy isn't excised from his person.
I've seen a blog (no doubt a self-serving piece of dramatics) where someone is readying himself/herself for the worst!!!!!, but if this was such a life-and-death operation, I suspect Bob would've been "opened up" a week or more ago so pulling a shroud over the man is way too premature.

Barker taped an interview this past week after a taping (also aired on the L.A. CBS station Other pieces of the interview weren't related to health. ie: popularity of the show, etc...)  where he mentioned there's one on his ear and one on his back.

Precautionary could mean different things to different people. You could get rid of it, thinking down the road it could be an issue. Or you have something and you have to take notice now, otherwise it could be a problem in the future. Either way, he's taking care of it.
