Title: Scrabble 93
Post by: golden-road on July 20, 2005, 04:50:30 PM
I had asked Z. Horan about it and he didn't seem to know, so I put this to the group. Why did the game board for Scrabble 93 not rotate on camera? Was it a time thing (they couldn't spend camera time showing it revolve)? And did anyone actually go to a taping and see it turn?

What?!!!  ZH doesn't know something???!!!  Saints preserve us!

I could speculate, but all it would be is speculation, but wasn't SCRABBLE93 taped in one of the smaller studios at NBC/Burbank (IOW, not 1, 2, 3 or 4), meaning there may not have been room for a rotating game board?

The preceeding was just speculation and may or may not be correct.  Use only as directed.  Must be 21 or over to gamble.

The encylcopedia says it taped in Studio 11.

Right, although what I was getting at was whether Studio 11's space was smaller than the four majors, leaving room for a rotating game board at a premium.

One of our mods or our esteemed announcer *might* know (someone else who I'm not giving enough credit to also may know).

Just a guess, but based on what else we saw on that show, I'd suggest it was budgetary, and that the cube didn't rotate on its own. I remember when the original Scrabble came on, reading an article detaining the extraordinary expense of the cube, so I'm guessing they saved a goodly amount not putting a motor in it big enough to turn that heavy thing around, and just had some stagehands do it off-camera.

I'll take this a step further -- I don't believe the "cube" rotated at all, and the entire game was played off the same video screen. (With two different programs, of course.) I don't ever recall seeing a shot of that side of the stage coming in or out of the Sprint Rounds.

Again, speculation, so take it as you like.

You know what? The more I think about it, the more I think you are exactly right. I forgot the Sprint was character-generated on that version instead of mechanical, like on the old one.

I bet you're exactly dead-on. Well done.

Studio 11 was built to accomodate "Santa Barbara" in 1984, so I am thinking it's larger than the older studios 1-4. The only dimension I found on the studio is that it's forty feet high, according to former SB actor A Martinez.

"Sunset Beach" later taped there; today the studio is the home of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show".

Not to be confused with THE Martinez.

Studio 11 is large enough to have it's own zip code. Around 2001 it housed BOTH FF and TTTT simultaneously. Wanna talk big? That was a Louie Anderson season of FF!   ;-p

Of course you saved the article and have scanned it into a text file which I can now post in the Archive to share with the group ... right?

And just a few years later, the game shows that kept studios 1 - 4 going back in the day would vanish. Today, studios 2 and 4 house DOOL, studio 3 houses Tonight, and studio 1 is looking for business.

Imagine an era when Johnny Carson had to be displaced from studio 1 to accomodate a game show.
