A new way to play BUMP
« on: December 24, 2024, 08:25:23 PM »
I thought of a hopefully fun, new way to play BUMP... it's a car game.

I never got why the vehicles in the original Bump were double decker buses... in my new version, they're BUMPER CARS, which are SUPPOSED to be bumped!!

The gameboard has some sort of carnival motif. There are 4 bumper cars in a row, all the same color each with a number on it. Let's say the 4 numbers are 2861. There are also two other cars with a number, each a different color on either side of the 4 numbers. Let's say we have a yellow car on the left with a 2 and a green car to the right with a 3.

The contestant can either take the yellow 2 car and BUMP the cars to the right, making the price of the car $22861... OR... they can take the green 3 car, bump it to the left, and make the price of the car $28,613. Just as in the original bump, the extra car bumps into a large hole at the end.

I'm not sure about the price reveal, but it should be something fun. Maybe the carnival motif could have a rotating ferris wheel and carousel horses that go up and down to signify a win, much in the same way items on the Professor Price gameboard moved to show a win.

So it’s a coin flip to win a car?

  • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.

Given the original signage closely resembled the UK flag, I think you have your answer as to why double-decker buses were used.  As for your game proposal...

Double Prices for a car, with a motif that looks like a clown threw up.  Pass.

i might argue that the set design was the only thing I enjoyed about Joker.

I think it would work with four digit prices nut they already have plenty enough games for that.

There's too much going on for a win compared to the act of playing the game. Plus you already have something like this in Gridlock, which is essentially Money Game meets Bump.
Fun Fact To Make You Feel Old: Syndicated Jeopeardy has allowed champs to play until they lose longer than they've retired them after five days.

What improvement does this really add to the game, though? Wasn't it removed for being too suggestive, along with the scandal between Bob and Dian? Adding a more expensive prize doesn't improve the game...it's still derivative.

Y'know, no one's ever tried to reinvent Cliff Hangers on the grounds that people aren't supposed to fall off mountains.

Woah, I didn't expect such feedback for this game idea.

I get that for some reason, the creator of the game went for a British theme, and made the vehicles double decker buses. I guess if you're a kid, you'd bump around your toy cars regardless of what they are. So I guess with that line of thinking, why not double decker buses.

There's nothing wrong with the two prize format of Bump, and I liked that on either end was one bus with the same price, so one aspect is you're deciding if the prize on the left or the prize on the right is say, $1000 for example. I just toyed with the idea of making it a car game and keeping the bump aspect.

Gridlock is NOTHING like Bump... there's no bumping of any cars. I think they were trying to create a game that had some mechanical aspect like Cliff Hangers and Hurdles. What I don't like is that, for me, there's not much exciting about seeing mechanical cars slowly merge to form the price of the car.

I suppose I didn't think about my game being basically another version of Double Prices. Okay, it is, and TPIR already has a few variations on that theme.

Based on the first playing of Bump, I don't think they necessarily thought of the more visually exciting notion of watching the models gyrate as they bump the cars. The first "Bump" was really more of a "Push", without any hip movement at all+. That part of the gameplay came later, maybe as early as the second time. Bob even outright suggested that the bumping should look more exciting... it was probably his idea, but I am sure the staff also thought something more needed to be done for the game.

That's not what you originally said:

Why? I imagine that's a Steve question. I remember watching the reruns on GSN and didn't recognize the blue in the logo, and the cards just looked like cars to me.
