It's one thing to download and seed, but another to run the tracker...

Couldn't the file-in-question (or other files down the line) just be posted to a public tracker?

Absolutely...but I got the impression from Chris' post that he was suggesting a GS-centric torrent site.

Oh, nonono, not in the least. All I was saying is that maybe sharing these things via Torrent is more of a viable method than I originally thought.

OK, it looks like I've picked up some traction here.  But we still need to decide a few things before we can move forward, I'll start with the big two:

1. What torrent site to use?  UKNova is obviously out.  I'm not familiar with much of the others rather than occasional hit-and-run when I forgot to set the TiVo.  Suggestions?!?

2. What do we consider acceptable caps?  To me, unless we are dealing with a show we are not dealing with original source material (e.g.: trading circuit stuff), I would consider nothing less than a DVD-quality MPEG (roughly 250 MB per half hour).  However, some people may not be as picky.

Discuss.

What's wrong with MiniNova? Everyone else seems to use it.

Xvid? Or is that what you're referring to? Hour shows tend to be about 360 MB, but that's with ads cut out so it's about 40 minutes running time.

(Speaking of, can anyone recommend a good idiotproofed program or tutorial that will convert a given video file to Xvid, of the quality used on most torrent sites? I'd love to encode better but I don't seem to be able to get the hang of exactly what settings to do it at.)

This may not answer your question directly, but:

If you've already got it in another format (MPEG, etc.) and want to get it to XviD, MediaCoder is a good option.

MediaCoder is pretty quick to encode a file and will handle just about any format, but the interface is a little tricky.  You can tweak almost everything and I'm never sure when I'm using the best settings.

To get it from a DVD to XviD, I use DVD Decrypter to convert to a VOB file.  From there, I use Auto Gordian Knot to get it to XviD. (AutoGK can handle MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and AVI inputs as well as VOB.)

The beauty of AutoGK is that you can get as deep as you want with tweaking the settings, but you don't have to.  The only thing you really have to specify is the target size of the output file.  For my own caps, I aim for 8MB per minute of video.

I've found some assistance using the tutorials at videohelp.com.  They've got a pretty good "How To" section.

Good stuff, Curt. I will definitely take a closer look at both of those. I'd heard of Gordian Knot, but didn't know there was an "Auto" flavor. Thanks for taking the time to post!

#41: The $1.98 Beauty Show.  GSN takes us back to its glory days to start week 2.

#40: Twenty-One, but as GSN doesn't own this one, it gets a passing mention.

#39: GE College Bowl, which also gets a passing mention.

#38: Whammy?!  Good night!

Shoulda gone to the bar instead.

Sheesh, when they started talking about GE College Bowl, I thought GSN was going to air that. But then they cut right to Whammy. Shame; I've never seen GE College Bowl, and would've liked to see just how good it was.

All in all, this was one of the weaker nights.

I'm starting to think I wasted a trip to the Family Dollar to pick up two blank video cassettes to tape this.  Does anyone know where a complete list of the countdown is.  The episodes of Treasure Hunters are looking better than this countdown.

As did I, but I think that it would've been incredibly dull, assuming that there's no appreciable difference from the modern-day College Bowls used.

However, if they did show one of their ties, I think it would've been moderately interesting.

My DVR didn't get all of it because of a storm tonight which threw it off.

I have no complaints.

$1.98 Beauty Show: I liked the show, actually. I spent more time laughing at the idiotic contestants than actually paying attention much to the show. Rip Taylor was terrific and hilarious, in his own way.

Whammy: Bleh, I wouldn't care, but it wasn't even a big epsiode! It was just a run-of-the-mill epsiode. I mean, it happens all the time! Thumbs in the middle tonight.
