So can someone on the East Coast give me some idea of when this bit happened? I'm interested in seeing it, but I have to admit it's the only thing I'm interested in seeing on the whole show, and if I can still let my Tivo record Big Brother at 8 and pick up the show at 9, I'd like to.

You'd miss a lot of it.  According to my TiVo, it started at 8:57.

You gotta be kidding me.  I would never picture someone like you watch that dreck.  Maybe it's just for Julie, eh?  :-)

I wouldn't hit the Chenbot with YOUR schlong.

Yeah, I know. BB is a guilty pleasure for me. I swallowed up Survivor All-Stars and came back for seconds, and this is no exception.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that slating this segment to carry over between the 8 and 9 o'clock hours was quite intentional. :)

Sweet. Due to CBS's tendency to end Big Brother at 8:55, I was just in time to see the tribute.

I felt a LOT better about that than I did the New Year's Eve show. It looked like he had at least regained partial use of both arms, and his speech was a little better. I don't think he'll ever regain pre-stroke form, or close to it, but the fact that there _was_ improvement was excellent to see.

I sincerely hope that he'll continue to make appearances on New Year's Rockin' Eve for as long as he has the desire to do so.

Same here.  I loved the fact that he said, "Sit down, sit down, we're running late..." as if he was producing the show.

He's not going to do anything heavy duty again on-camera, but if he wants to continue to do "Rockin' Eve" and make a token appearance, have at it.  It's in good hands with Seacrest, but having him around, if even for just at midnight, won't hurt, barring a relapse.

Confession time. I cried when I saw Dick at the Emmys.

After working with him I was not much of a fan. But there are few I've respected more as broadcasters. He's a master at being able to project warmth, likeabilty and honesty through the lens. And I will never ever forget watching a session in which he cranked out upwards of 60 promos for local stations with precision. He has a clock in his head and a knowledge of stations and markets like no other talent I've ever worked with.

For about a dozen of the stations, after reading the requested copy, he ad-libbed promos based on his knowledge of things such as the stations' identifiers and news anchors' names, all from memory. Stuff like: "Hi, this is Dick Clark here on the Quad Cities' favorite, WXXX. I hope you'll watch The Challengers weekdays at 4, then join my buddy Jim Shlomo and the 'Action 5' news team. The Quad Ciries' best is on WXXX, channel 5". The call letters and market were on the cue cards, the rest was in his head!

It must be tough to have that mind trapped in a compromised body.

Since we're sharing stories :

3 Years ago...I got the chance to interview Dick via satellite....as a fan of his since childhood, this would be one of my dreams.

Unfortunately, Dick was live with Jimmy Kimmel (hosting the Amer. Music Awards)....and after fawning over Dick while the satelitte shot was being set up , he left most of the interview to Jimmy...who, if you've met in person, just isn't that funny.

I was so dissapointed at how the interview went, I didn't keep it on tape. Now , more than ever, I wish I had.

a year later, he had his stroke...and now I doubt i'll ever get a chance to have a real conversation with someone that I honestly revere....I only have a few regrets in my television career...this is one of them.

Watching him last night was still painful. Yes, he looks better than how he looked 9 months ago, but it's frustrating knowing that there inside his dibilitating body is one of the masters of broadcasting. Randy's spot on (again)... how tough it must be to have a compromised body....

At the little ol' radio station I worked for, Dick was going to do just that sort of a thing.  He gave us a quick 5 second "shout" ID and was planning to do some PSAs and other goodies in regards to diabetes and the like.  But literally the day he was scheduled to do some of said activities, he had the stroke.

In the past I've made mention of it, and I'll link you to it on the Bonus Page, one of the happier times for my colleague Jon Casey at WSNJ...an interview with his hero and ours Dick Clark in October 2004 during his tribute to American Bandstand.  It's one of and perhaps the last interview Dick gave prior to his stroke.  Click here to access the page to get to the file.  Enjoy.

The honesty part is my favorite thing about Dick Clark.  He had no qualms describing the behind-the-scenes process in detail to the viewers; I seem to recall he did this especially on Pyramid.  He knew everyone at home wanted a glimpse around the corner of the lens and by golly, that was okay with him.

I remember when the Emmys went on in 1980 despite the actors strike and Dick co-hosted because he was a producer and therefore, management, not bound by the unions' call for a boycott.  I seem to remember him describing all of this, explaining why he was there at that point, when he first took the podium that evening, and I always admired the hell out of him for that.

I don't suppose anyone can upload this clip from the Emmy's last night, can they? I had to miss it for work.

I've uploaded it to my site...click here to download the file.  It's just over 2 minutes long and 18MB.  Enjoy!

P.S. It's in XviD format.  If you need something that will play XviD videos, I'd recommend VLC Player.
