30 years ago, Chuck Barris bought the rights from Jan Murray a game show he did in the 50's.  Chuck then dropped the quiz segment, male contestants & titled his new show, The New Treasure Hunt!

Geoff Edwards hosted as female contestants tried to win that grand prize of...

Some people liked it, some hated it.  As for me, it's \"The Wicked Witch of the East\" of Game Shows.

Does GSN ever run Treasure Hunt? I would think it's worth a marathon on a dreary autumn weekday.

 Yeah, it would be nice to see 80s(or even 70s TH if they can clear certain music heard on that show, which also keeps a lot of Gong SHow episodes from airing) again. The last time they aired it was in April 2001, when a Saturday Night marathon featuring eight episodes from 1981, with a very excited Jamaica Rose winning over $50K in cash and prizes, was aired. THey last aired the show regularly in 1997-98 during the largely(save for TPIR and 1994-95 Family Feud with Dawson) Goodson-Todman-less Dark Period

Is music clearance really an issue for Treasure Hunt? I know it is on The Gong Show, but that was filled with musical performances. Treasure Hunt only had a set of prize music, didn't it?

Well, if you can't get that package cleared, then there are clearance issues.

Did GSN air a marathon of TH recently?  I don't remember.  If so, it could be that just they don't want to air it, just like they don't want to air a lot of good shows in their vault.

 When they aired a TH marathon in April 2001, it was from the 1981 version, which doesn't have issues of music clearances(used some Newlywed and Dating prize cues IIRC)

To date, GSN has aired 2 episodes from the '70s version (which I think was the better of the two versions), and around 50 episodes of the '80s version.

Yes, there are music clearance issues with the '70s version with some of the prize music used on the show.  It has nothing to do with the closing theme, as some people have thought.

 As I remember it in the three-station days of the 70's, \"New Treasure Hunt\" aired at 7:30 on Saturday nights.  \"Hee-Haw\" and a community-service show were on the other two channels, so \"Treasure Hunt\" was sort of the least of three evils.

Wasn't it a very cheap-looking show?

In its later years, when they were using a Trans American crew at the Warner Bros. lot (The Burbank Studios), had only two models and a 3M Datavision character generator instead of art cards (not to mention painfully obvious sweetening).  The first two years at ABC were very slick-looking, particularly the first season when they had the crane camera and five models.  However, I guess Barris decided using the crane was too expensive and the cutting back started in the second season.

I guess I'm just curious why GSN is having clearance issues now, but CBN didn't when they picked up the reruns of the 70's version in 1984?

 Nope!  Sports Challenge was a celebrity show (sports stars playing for charity).  All-celebrity games don't count!

And, IIRC, Sports Challenge was produced by the PBS station in Los Angeles.  Probably the first and only PBS \"game show\", and would it have been done in any other market but LA?

You're kidding, right?  Little thing called \"Carmen Sandiego\" for starters, not to mention \"Think Twice\" and a couple of 1970s offerings.  Also, a few PBS stations have their own local game shows, usually high school quizzers.  Some of them are quite good, actually....
