Match Game 3:30 AM Sun. Night/Monday Morning
« on: November 24, 2006, 11:32:37 PM »
I see according to my Dish Network DVR that "Match Game" is in the 3:30 AM slot Sunday Night/Monday Morning on the upcoming weekend.  Might this be a 1964 celebrity episode GSN has run before considering that "MG:Behind The Blank" will just have aired that night?..Or even another we havent seen lately?

According to Steve Beverly it is supposed to be a black and white ep.

Thanks for the confirmation.  GSN has been running B&W shows on Sunday/Monday of course in recent weeks..The timing makes sense.  The Only Original Match Game I've seen on GSN is during  the January 20, 1964 week with Betty White, Joan Fontaine,  Peggy Cass, Henry Morgan, Robert Q. Lewis and Bennett Cerf..Has GSN shown any other "regular" original MG episodes besides this one?

The two others have been pilot itself and the Orson Bean/Jayne Mansfield episode from 7/28/64.  If it is truly B&W, that would rule them out 'borrowing' the June 69 episode from MT&R with Peggy Cass and Tony Randall, since that one is in color.

Don't think that will happen.  I've kept tabs of the shows that have been rerun on the once-a-week classic overnight block...the only "premiere" I've seen is the ABC Password from '71, and even that had the major word of mouth we'd surely already heard if we were getting a '60s color Match Game.

They did, however, show a rarely seen daytime Play Your Hunch a few weeks ago, meaning it could likely be any of the three black and white Match Game shows they've already shown.

GSN showed the 1962 pilot?

It's Orson and Jayne, just in case you were smarter than me and went to sleep long ago.

As someone creaky enough to remember the original "Match Game," it was a delightful stroll down memory lane. Slightly disappointed that it was a kinescope - I recall the way the word "MATCH" would glare out from the trilons, something that wasn't captured by this filmed record.

Wondering how this particular episode was saved. Why did they make a kinescope? Why of this episode? Among other questions of no consequence.

Slow? No more so than the original "Password." It was a slower time, don't you know.

The original Password was enjoyable, and still is.

And obviously the audience felt the same way I did, this didn't last long. :)

No, I'll admit to not knowing the original Match Game lasted that long.

Now, I'll still say I don't know *why* it did. :) Unless that one show wasn't representative of the enjoyment factor.

I think on "Match Game, Behind The Blank", it was said that the show was on the verge of cancellation around 1964-65 but that they had a few weeks to go, so it was decided to jazz up the questions some to make it more "fun".  The ratings then picked up and the show was saved from cancellation.

Also, most game shows at this time were relatively slow paced (Other than "Let's Make A Deal")..If Match Game werent successful originally you might not have had Match Game '73, etc..
