Give-N-Take theme music...
« on: February 21, 2007, 03:35:36 PM »
One of my personal favorite 1970s game show themes is now on T.Q's Game Show Themes site!
I don't seem to recall for sure, but was this a Stan Worth piece?

Yes, it was--Worth did all of Carruthers' shows in the 70s (of course, with the exception of "Second Chance").

For those interested:

The title of this piece is "The Red Arrow".

And I could have sworn that Stan did the Second Chance theme.

If he didn't, who did?

I think it was credited to Score Productions, from what I could recall looking at their site a long time ago. In terms of who the composer(s) of the theme was, I don't know.

Indeed, "Second Chance" was Score----remember that it debuted on the '76 version of IGAS.

/that theme would have made a good TPIR cue

There are three things I've learned never to discuss with people: Religion, politics, and the proper wrapping of microphone cables.

IIRC, that was the color of the huge arrow that spun around on the set.

Does anyone know if Carruthers sold all of his shows to Fremantle or just "PYL?"  Even if "Give 'n' Take" wasn't much of a game, if Fremantle wanted something for the screaming Type As that "DOND" thinks we want as contestants, they could look at it.

Not sure about the concepts, but all of the Carruthers shows of the 1970's I remember were done in association with Warner Brothers Television.
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

I could be wrong, but that isn't how I remember it.

You're suggesting a revival of a game show that was NOT EVEN 13 weeks and out.

What's next, the All-Star "You're In The Picture?" That was a horribly underrated show, it deserves another chance!

Could be me misinterpreting a dry comment, but Mark is right.

Not dry in the least. I genuinely didn't think so. But I did indeed say I could be wrong. Thanks for the confirmation.

I recently learned that Carruthers actually DID take a stab at reviving the fundamental concept of Give 'n' Take sometime in the eighties.  Instead of a giant spinner, though, a giant die (excuse me, a giant 'regular hexahedron') determined which of three contestants had control of a given prize. (In this version, you could improve your odds by answering a toss-up question.)  The object was still to give and take prizes to reach a target amount without going over.

This version had a fundamental flaw in it that I can't remember whether Give 'n' Take had, in that the prizes kept getting nicer and more expensive, so a player who had gone over really didn't have much of a way to get back under the target amount.  Winning a round meant you GOT that prize, making your score go even higher, and you typically wouldn't have anything more expensive to give away.  Coming from the man who made a game that worked as well as Press Your Luck did, that little catch-22 was surprising to see.

[gentle-prod]I'm hoping you'll see a more complete writeup about this on the Game Show Pilot Light soon.[/gentle-prod]

[technical-snark-to-answer-gentle-prod]It wasn't a regular hexahedron.  It was six tetrahedrons fused together.[/technical-snark-to-answer-gentle-prod]  You got to know your platonic solids (why doesn't Letterman use this audience quiz).

I'll get to it, folks.  Making gold out of crap doesn't happen overnight.

I read that and imagined a six-foot-tall cube tumbling around the set with contestants running out of its way.

...Actually, that's not terrible television. I'm going to go write that concept up. Which stand-up comedian should I get to host?
